Book A Union of Multiple Identities

Download or read book A Union of Multiple Identities written by L. W. B. Brockliss and published by Manchester University Press. This book was released on 1997 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores the importance of history to Elizabethan and early Stuart gentry and how this led to a vibrant antiquarian culture. The family, town and county histories written by the community, which form the core of the study, had an influence on the development of local history in England which lasted into the twentieth century and is still felt today. Eschewing a narrow historiographical approach, the author examines a range of manuscript and published works and other material reflecting the gentry's interest in the past: pedigree rolls, antiquarian notebooks, heraldic displays and maps. The book provides a survey of the development of local history in England from its medieval origins to 1660. This is followed by chapters on the practicalities of local historical research: the national educational and institutional framework, the development of regional networks of local historians and the gentlemen who controlled access to their sources, and analysis of the source materials available. The final section features chapters on genealogy, didacticism and the physical world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Gwenlyn Parry was one of the most important Welsh-language playwrights of the twentieth century and played a key role in the popularisation and flourishing of drama in the theatre and on television during the 1970s and 1980s. Parry’s major stage plays – Saer Doliau, Tŷ ar y Tywod, Y Ffin and Y Tŵr – had a substantial impact, and were instrumental in solidifying a new relationship between drama and theatrical production in Welsh, bringing the theatricality of the Absurd to a popular audience for the first time. His plays have been the subject of much critical attention in Welsh, and have been reinterpreted in production on many occasions, both in their original form and in translation. This study is the first extended treatment of his life and work in English, and examines the complex and occasionally paradoxical relationship between the autobiographical aspects of his writing and his use of theatrical form.

Book Performing Wales

Download or read book Performing Wales written by Lisa Lewis and published by University of Wales Press. This book was released on 2018-05-15 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Beginning from the premise that culture can be analysed as performance, this study approaches Welsh culture as performative practice and explores four distinct cultural areas – the Museum, Heritage, Festival and Theatre – concentrating on how they contribute to a shared sense of identity among participants. Through specific examples, the author traces the way cultural performance in Wales both creates and sustains specific relationships between people, memory and place, revealing reflections of ourselves and constituting our remembrances of others and of history. The discussion emphasizes the significance of performance in voicing issues of identity within a peripheral context – a position informed by the author’s own perspective as a bilingual Welsh and English speaker.

Book The Literary and Historical Legacy of Iolo Morganwg 1826 1926

Download or read book The Literary and Historical Legacy of Iolo Morganwg 1826 1926 written by Marion Löffler and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This volume analyses the public reception and criticism of the writings of Iolo Morganwg during the long nineteenth century, considers the development of his ideas about the Eisteddfod and the Gorsedd of the Bards of the Isle of Britain, and reveals how the myth of 'old Iolo' took root at a time when Romanticism and nationalism gave rise to a historicist view of nationhood. The counterfeit material that Iolo added to historical sources was eagerly received by scholars in search of a core historical narrative and also inspired Romantics much farther afield. From the late Victorian period, however, a powerful critique of Iolo's legacy paved the way for more reputable twentieth-century Welsh scholarship. A selection of little-known key texts included in this volume also provides new insights into the way in which this legendary figure and his work were perceived." --Book Jacket.

Book Miraculous Simplicity

Download or read book Miraculous Simplicity written by William V. Davis and published by University of Arkansas Press. This book was released on 1993-02 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pondering now the being and nature of God, now the mystery of time, now the assault of contemporary lifestyles on the natural world, R. S. Thomas’s poetry and prose reflect his Welsh heritage and his determination to be Welsh. Moved by his own personal attraction to the work of Thomas and guided by his careful reading of it, William V. Davis brings us this excellent collection of essays exploring the distinguished yet controversial poet-priest. In the autobiographical essay, Thomas reveals his passion for his homeland and his ever-present hunger for spiritual and natural exploration: As I stood in the sun and the sea wind, with my shadow falling upon those rocks, I certainly was reminded of the transience of human existence, and my own in particular. As Pindar put it: “A dream about a shadow is man.” I began to ponder more the being and nature of God and his relation to the late twentieth-century situation, which science and technology had created in the western world. Where did the ancient world of rock and ocean fit into an environment in which nuclear physics and the computer were playing an increasingly prominent part? . . .

Book The Welsh in an Australian Gold Town

Download or read book The Welsh in an Australian Gold Town written by Robert Llewellyn Tyler and published by University of Wales Press. This book was released on 2010-11-15 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Works which have sought to look specifically at the Welsh in Australia have been few in number and characterised by a concentration on prominent individuals and cultural/religious societies, thus excluding many facets of immigrant life. This book provides an analysis of the Welsh immigrant community in the Ballarat/Sebastopol gold mining district of Victoria, Australia during the second half of the nineteenth century and considers all aspects of the Welsh immigrant experience. As its focus, the book has the Welsh migrant group as a whole, in one particular area, during one period of time, for ultimately it was the migrants themselves who were responsible for the strength or weakness of Welsh religious life, the success or failure of Welsh cultural institutions; they who decided whether or not to retain and transmit their national language if, indeed, they spoke it in the first place; they who chose whether or not to marry within their own group, to live amongst their own, to retain the ties of Welshness and pass on the values of the Old Country, or to attempt full and immediate integration; they who were miners or shop owners, abstainers or drunkards, law abiding or criminal. A true picture of Welsh immigrant life can only be obtained by considering the community in its entirety, to view it in the round, as it were. This work attempts to do just that and hopes to make some small contribution to the understanding of what it was to be one amongst the thousands of Welsh people who lived in a particular place at a certain time in a land so far from Wales.
