Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Concept of Unity as the Principle of Coherence in Maximus Confessor Jonathan Bieler lays out the importance of the concepts of transcendent divine unity, goodness and truth for understanding the coherence of the whole of Maximus’ thought, which brings together theology, anthropology and Christology into a unified vision that is based on an analogy between creator and creation. Interpreting the concepts of Maximus’ thought remains a contentious subject in Maximian scholarship. By evaluating the interior coherence and historical situation of Maximus’ thought in general and by studying the influence of Ps-Dionysius the Areopagite’s methodology on Maximus’ Christology in particular the author shows the context in which Maximus’ well-known conceptual distinctions can be understood in a helpful way.

Download or read book Doctrine Dynamic and Difference written by Pieter de Witte and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2012-03-29 with total page 227 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the most divisive issues in Western Christianity since the Reformation is the question of how humans are justified by God. In 1999, after many decades of ecumenical dialogue, Lutherans and Roman Catholics have declared that this issue of 'justification by faith' is no longer a cause of division between them. One of the fascinating features of this Joint Declaration on the Doctrine of Justification (JDDJ) is that it expresses a 'differentiated consensus' on justification. The method of differentiated consensus is generally regarded as an important methodological step forward in the ecumenical dialogue. It has been used and referred to in ecumenical documents published after 1999. But what are its meaning and implications? This study attempts to clarify the method of differentiated consensus by (1) investigating the process of doctrinal rapprochement which led up to the JDDJ, (2) examining the way the consensus takes shape in the document itself, (3) analyzing arguments offered by critics and advocates of the official dialogue and (4) reflecting on the concept of doctrinal difference.

This book was released on 2019-07-31 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. [Lutheran Identity] The study "Lutheran Identity" is a contribution of the Institute for Ecumenical Research in Strasbourg to the self-understanding of the Lutheran churches worldwide. In its first set of theses, the basic theological convictions of Lutheran churches are described, explained, and their historical and actual contexts are addressed. In the second series of theses, the relation of Lutheran churches to the unity of the church is discussed, along with how it is articulated in the Lutheran World Federation and in ecumenical engagement. Finally, present-day challenges for the Lutheran churches and their identity are addressed in an ecumenical perspective. The study intends to encourage Lutheran churches to reflect on a clear, historically well-founded, self-critical, and inviting understanding of their identity.
Download or read book Conflict and Reconciliation written by Inigo Bocken and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2004-08-01 with total page 239 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with one of the main themes in the life and thinking of Nicholas of Cusa (1401-1464), the experience of conflict and the need to realise reconciliation and tolerance. The essays in this volume are discussing not only the various conflicts in which this important philosopher, theologian, mathematician and politician of the 15th century was involved, but also try to interpret the main speculative themes in his philosophical and theological works in the perspective of his historical experiences. As such, the book also delivers a contribution to a better understanding of intellectual, religious and cultural life of the 15th Century as an era of transition between late Middle Ages and Early Modernity. Contributors include: Inigo Bocken, Tilman Borsche, Gerald Christianson, Jean-Michel Counet, Jos Decorte (†), Wilhelm Dupré, Stephan van Erp, Maarten J.F.M. Hoenen, William Hoye, Thomas Izbicki, Frans Maas, Markus Riedenauer, Nikolaus Staubach, and Anton G. Weiler.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We would like to recommend this book to all who are concerned about the Porvoo fellowship as well as those who are commited to visible unity -K G Hammar and David Hope Apostolicity and Unity explores the purpose and potential of the Porvoo Common Statement (PCS), a major ecumenical agreement between the Anglican churches in Great Britain and Ireland and the Lutheran churches in the Nordic and Baltic nations. First presented in 1992 and now affirmed by ten signatory churches, the PCS provides the basis for church fellowship for approximately fifty percent of the so-called Protestant Christians in Europe. Porvoo is the European parallel to the 'Called to Common Mission' statement arising out of the Episcopal-Lutheran dialogue in the United States. Written by church leaders and theologians who have long worked for the cause of church unity, this volume discusses key aspects of the PCS, including the nature of the church, the basic characteristics of church unity, and the church's mission in the world. Special emphasis is placed on the theological core of the PCS -- its understanding of apostolicity and apostolic continuity, and its proposal of how different signs of such continuity can be shared between the churches within the framework of communion. Critical contributions from members of other church traditions round out the volume by assessing the wider ecumenical significance of the PCS.
Download or read book Von Josua bis Jojachin written by Hartmut Rösel and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2014-09-03 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume deals with the question of the "deuteronomistic history" in the Old Testament and attempts to demonstrate that such a uniform history never existed; the books of Deuteronomy - 2 Kings do not contain such a history. The first part of the book shows that there is no homogenous conceptual framework in the deuteronomistic historical books. For example, different concepts of sin and punishment are found. Even the destruction of Judah and Jerusalem does not represent a "Leitmotiv" of divine punishment. The second part of the book deals with problems relating to the various deuteronomistic redactions in the historical books of the Old Testament. In this book the author introduces new perspectives in the discussion of a central problem of Old Testament scholarship.
