Da Bnicht schon mehrere lebensfahige Konkurrenzwerke auf diesem Gebiete erschienen sind, liegt vorzugsweise an der Schwierigkeit des Unternehmens. In der Tat, wiirde man an ein solches die gleichen wissenschaftlichen Anspruche stellen wie an die abschlieBende Behandlung einer begrenzten Geschichtsperiode oder gar an eine Spezialuntersuchung, so ware kein Historiker der Gegenwart einer solchen Aufgabe gewachsen. Denn selbst das arbeitsreichste Gelehrtenleben ware zu kurz, um in den vielen auseinanderliegenden Gebieten eine so eingehende und selbstandige Quellen und Literatur kenntnis zu erwerben, wie sie im einzelnen sonderfach gefordert, aber sogar hier nur durch jahrelangen rastlosen Flei Bgewonnen wird. Wer sich trotzdem an die vorliegende Arbeit wagt, mu Bsich darum Ziele stecken, die nicht von vornherein unerreichbar sind; er kann namentlich nicht fiir tunlichst viele Spezialforschungen Vorarbeiten und fertige Regeln liefern wollen. Vielmehr habe ich drei Zwecken zu dienen gesucht. Erstens wollte ich das Augenmerk auf gewisse durchgehends und von Spezialthemen unabhangig wichtige Fragen lenken. Zweitens wollte ich studierende, aber auch andere Liebhaber der Geschichtswissenschaft uber neuzeitliche Quellen und Literatur unterrichten und damit die ersten Wege eigenen Forschens erleichtern. Drittens wollte ich in beschranktem Umfange auch ein Nachschlagebuch schaffen. Denn einmal gibt es z. B. auf bibliographischem Gebiete eine Reihe Angaben, die man fortwahrend braucht, aber meist nicht zur Hand hat und hochstens mechanisch auswendig lernen konnte; auBerdem bin ich naturlich auf zahlreiche entlegene Dinge und Notizen gestoBen, welche ich im Zusammenhange des jetzigen Buches den Spezialinteressenten zuganglich zu machen wunschte und namentlich in den Anmerkungen untergebracht habe.
