Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the second of three volumes providing a comprehensive presentation of the fundamentals of scientific computing. This volume discusses more advanced topics than volume one, and is largely not a prerequisite for volume three. This book and its companions show how to determine the quality of computational results, and how to measure the relative efficiency of competing methods. Readers learn how to determine the maximum attainable accuracy of algorithms, and how to select the best method for computing problems. This book also discusses programming in several languages, including C++, Fortran and MATLAB. There are 49 examples, 110 exercises, 66 algorithms, 24 interactive JavaScript programs, 77 references to software programs and 1 case study. Topics are introduced with goals, literature references and links to public software. There are descriptions of the current algorithms in LAPACK, GSLIB and MATLAB. This book could be used for a second course in numerical methods, for either upper level undergraduates or first year graduate students. Parts of the text could be used for specialized courses, such as nonlinear optimization or iterative linear algebra.

Book Advanced Methods for Solving Nonlinear Eigenvalue Problems of Generalized Phase Optimization

Download or read book Advanced Methods for Solving Nonlinear Eigenvalue Problems of Generalized Phase Optimization written by Mykhaylo I. Andriychuk and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the process of solving the problems of generalized phase optimization the necessity to apply an eigenvalue approach often appears. The practical statement of the optimization problems consists of using the amplitude characteristics of functions that are sought. The usual way of optimization is deriving the Euler equation of the functional, which is used as criterion of optimization. As a rule, such equation is an integral one. It is worth pointing out that the integral equations of the generalized phase optimization are nonlinear ones. The characteristic property of such equations is non-uniqueness of solutions and their branching or bifurcation. The determination of branching solutions leads to the investigation of the corresponding homogeneous equations and the respective eigenvalue problem. This problem is nonlinear because of specificity of the statement of the optimization problem. The study of the above problem allows us to determine a set of points, in which the respective eigenvalues are equal to unity that determines the branching points of solutions. The data of calculations testify to the ability of the approach proposed to determine the solutions of nonlinear equations numerically with not large computations.

Book Nonlinear Analysis and Optimization

Download or read book Nonlinear Analysis and Optimization written by Alfred Auslender and published by North Holland. This book was released on 1987 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study collects the papers presented at the Nonlinear Analysis and Optimization conference held at the Center for Operations Research and Econometrics (CORE) in Louvain-la-Neuve, Belgium. It was the firm belief of the organizers of the meeting that there is a natural interaction between the methods used in nonlinear analysis and the problems encountered in optimization, and that gathering the papers into one book would be beneficial for both parties concerned. The papers are mainly concerned with the following themes: nonlinear analysis, sensitivity (stability) analysis and algorithms in nonlinear programming (for smooth, nonsmooth and global problems).

Book Nonsmooth Mechanics and Convex Optimization

Download or read book Nonsmooth Mechanics and Convex Optimization written by Yoshihiro Kanno and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2011-04-05 with total page 447 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book concerns matter that is intrinsically difficult: convex optimization, complementarity and duality, nonsmooth analysis, linear and nonlinear programming, etc. The author has skillfully introduced these and many more concepts, and woven them into a seamless whole by retaining an easy and consistent style throughout. The book is not all theory: There are many real-life applications in structural engineering, cable networks, frictional contact problems, and plasticity... I recommend it to any reader who desires a modern, authoritative account of nonsmooth mechanics and convex optimization." — Prof. Graham M.L. Gladwell, Distinguished Professor Emeritus, University of Waterloo, Fellow of the Royal Society of Canada "... reads very well—the structure is good, the language and style are clear and fluent, and the material is rendered accessible by a careful presentation that contains many concrete examples. The range of applications, particularly to problems in mechanics, is admirable and a valuable complement to theoretical and computational investigations that are at the forefront of the areas concerned." — Prof. B. Daya Reddy, Department of Mathematics and Applied Mathematics, Director of Centre for Research in Computational and Applied Mechanics, University of Cape Town, South Africa "Many materials and structures (e.g., cable networks, membrane) involved in practical engineering applications have complex responses that cannot be described by smooth constitutive relations. ... The author shows how these difficult problems can be tackled in the framework of convex analysis by arranging the carefully chosen materials in an elegant way. Most of the contents of the book are from the original contributions of the author. They are both mathematically rigorous and readable. This book is a must-read for anyone who intends to get an authoritative and state-of-art description for the analysis of nonsmooth mechanics problems with theory and tools from convex analysis." — Prof. Xu Guo, State Key Laboratory of Structural Analysis for Industrial Equipment, Department of Engineering Mechanics, Dalian University of Technology
