Book excerpt: Excerpt from Egyptian Days Let it be understood, then, that I have tried to write a book that shall be helpful to the untutored, - Such a book, in short, as I myself should have been glad to discover when I first prepared to set out for Egypt, but for which I sought in vain. The form in which I have cast the chapters on the Upper Nile the journal of an ordinary voyage by steamer such as is made by many hundred people every year seems best suited to the scope of the present work. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Three Days in Memphis: Or Sketches of the Public and Private Life of the Old Egyptians Almost every one who in former as well as at later periods has visited this land of wonders, has felt it necessary to pub lish his observations and experience in travels. Why should not the same privilege be allowed to him whose dreams of a brief period have carried him back thousands of years, while they exhibit to him in his earnest research of the old monu ments a picture of the Ancient Capital of the land of the Pharaohs long since buried beneath its ruins. Large books have indeed been written during the last few years respecting one and another branch of Egyptian public and private life; but they are intelligible and accessible to but few, on account of their learned character as well as their great extent and cost. Book The Religion of Ancient Egypt

Download or read book The Religion of Ancient Egypt written by William Matthew Flinders Petrie and published by Binker North. This book was released on 1906 with total page 120 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Religion of Ancient Egypt is a classic religious studies text by the great pioneering English egyptologist, W. M. Flinders Petrie. Before dealing with the special varieties of the Egyptians' belief in gods, it is best to try to avoid a misunderstanding of their whole conception of the supernatural. The term god has come to tacitly imply to our minds such a highly specialised group of attributes, that we can hardly throw our ideas back into the more remote conceptions to which we also attach the same name.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Egypt as We Knew It She will suddenly wake up and proceed to make history at such a rate that a quarter of a century will give her chronicler material for a volume. There is more difference, I venture to say, between the Egypt of Abbas and of Ismail, than between the days of Ismail Pasha in 1865 and the days of David Pasha in 1545. Book Bonaparte in Egypt

Download or read book Bonaparte in Egypt written by Haji A. Browne and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-22 with total page 422 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Bonaparte in Egypt: And the Egyptians Egyptian to-Day I have given of all I have had to give, for the pro motion of two objects first, that pan-islamism, which I conceive to be the true interest of the Islamic world; and, secondly, the development of friendly relations between the Moslems of the East and the British Empire. How much, or how little, I have been able to accomplish towards the fulfilment of my aims it is impossible for me to estimate, but from boyhood I have had an earnest faith in the belief that right and truth must in the end prevail, and that he who works for these, or for what he honestly believes these to be, never works In vain. Knowing the Egyptian as I know him, I cannot but think that he is greatly misunderstood, even by those who are sincerely anxious to befriend him. His faults and his failings are to be found at large in almost any of the scores of books that have of late years been written about him and his country; but, though not a few have given him credit for some of his more salient good points, yet none that I have seen have shown any just appreciation of him as he really is. Book The Ancient Egyptian Book of Thoth

Download or read book The Ancient Egyptian Book of Thoth written by Richard Jasnow and published by Otto Harrassowitz Verlag. This book was released on 2005 with total page 612 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The composition, which the editors entitle the "Book of Thoth", is preserved on over forty Graeco-Roman Period papyri from collections in Berlin, Copenhagen, Florence, New Haven, Paris, and Vienna. The central witness is a papyrus of fifteen columns in the Berlin Museum. Written almost entirely in the Demotic script, the Book of Thoth is probably the product of scribes of the "House of Life", the temple scriptorium. It comprises largely a dialogue between a deity, usually called "He-who-praises-knowledge" (presumably Thoth himself) and a mortal, "He-who-loves-knowledge". The work covers such topics as the scribal craft, sacred geography, the underworld, wisdom, prophecy, animal knowledge, and temple ritual. Particularly remarkable is one section (the "Vulture Text") in which each of the 42 nomes of Egypt is identified with a vulture. The language is poetic; the lines are often clearly organized into verses. The subject-matter, dialogue structure, and striking phraseology raise many issues of scholarly interest; especially intriguing are the possible connections between this Egyptian work, in which Thoth is called "thrice-great", and the classical Hermetic Corpus, in which Hermes Trismegistos plays the key role. The first volume comprises interpretative essays, discussion of specific points such as the manuscript tradition, script, and language. The core of the publication is the transliteration of the Demotic text, translation, and commentary. A consecutive translation, glossary, bibliography, and indices conclude the first volume. The second volume contains photographs of the papyri, almost all of which reproduce their original size.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Uarda, Vol. 1 of 2: A Romance of Ancient Egypt IN the winter of 1873 I spent some weeks in one of the tombs of the Necropolis of Thebes in order to study the monuments of that solemn city of the dead; and during my long rides in the silent desert the germ was developed whence this book has since grown. The leisure of mind and body required to write it was given me through a long but not disabling illness. In the first instance I intended to. Elucidate this story - like my Egyptian Princess - with numerous and extensive notes placed at the end; but I was led to give up this plan from finding that it would lead me to the repetition of much that I had written in the notes to that earlier work. The numerous notes to the former novel had a threefold purpose. In the first place they served to explain the text; in the second they were a guarantee of the care with which I had striven to depict the archaeological details in all their individuality from the records of the monuments and of Classic Authors; and thirdly I hoped to supply the reader who desired further knowledge of the period with some guide to his studies. Book Popular Account of the Ancient Egyptians Vol 1 of 2 Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2017-12-14 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Popular Account of the Ancient Egyptians, Vol. 1 of 2 I have here and there introduced some remarks relating to the Greeks, thinking that a comparison of the habits and arts of other people, with those of the Egyptians, may be interesting; and the impulse now given to taste in England has induced me to add some observations on decorative art, as well as on colour, form, and proportion, so well understood in ancient times. And as many of the ideas now gaining ground in this country, regarding colour, adaptability of materials, the non-imitation of natural objects for ornamental purposes, and certain rules to be observed in decorative works, have long been advocated by me, and pro perly belong to the subject of Egypt, I think the Opportunity well suited for expressing my opinion upon them while I rejoice that public attention has been invited to take a proper view of the mode of improving taste.
