Book excerpt: Excerpt from Egypt and Western Asia in Antiquity In the effort to unite completeness with due condensation the aid of illustrations has been lavishly invoked. Maps have been introduced wherever necessary to aid in the comprehension Of the text; and sources of all kinds have been freely laid under contribution wherever they can supplement description or convey more definite impressions to the understanding through the eye. In the selection of illustrative material especial care has been exercised to give that which is authentic, whether in the representation of persons and places, of' monuments and works Of art, of documents and events, or of coins and inscriptions. Book Egypt and Western Asia in the Light of Recent Discoveries Classic Reprint

Download or read book Egypt and Western Asia in the Light of Recent Discoveries Classic Reprint written by I. W. King and published by . This book was released on 2015-08-04 with total page 556 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Egypt and Western Asia in the Light of Recent Discoveries The present volume contains an account of the most important additions which have been made to our knowledge of the ancient history of Egypt and Western Asia during the few years which have elapsed since the publication of Prof. Maspero's Histoire Ancienne des Peuples de l'Orient Classique, and includes short descriptions of the excavations from which these results have been obtained. It is in no sense a connected and continuous history of these countries, for that has already been written by Prof. Maspero, but is rather intended as an appendix or addendum to his work, briefly recapitulating and describing the discoveries made since its appearance. On this account we have followed a geographical rather than a chronological system of arrangement, but at the same time the attempt has been made to suggest to the mind of the reader the historical sequence of events. At no period have excavations been pursued with more energy and activity, both in Egypt and Western Asia, than at the present time, and every season's work obliges us to modify former theories, and extends our knowledge of periods of history which even ten years ago were unknown to the historian. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Records of the Past, Vol. 5: Being English Translations of the Ancient Monuments of Egypt and Western Asia I have again to deplore the death of one of my colleagues, Mr. G. Bertin, whose contributions to Assyriology had secured for him a foremost place in the small band of Assyrian scholars. Like M. Amiaud, he had especially devoted himself to the study of Sumerian, in which, therefore, his loss will be particularly felt. His valuable contribution to the third volume of the present series of Records of tbe Past on the precepts of early Sumerian agriculture was one of the last literary works upon which he was engaged. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Records of the Past, Vol. 6: Being English Translations of the Ancient Monuments of Egypt and Western Asia With the present volume the New Series of the Records of the Past comes to an end. The public seems to prefer books about the ancient inscriptions of the Oriental world rather than translations of the inscriptions themselves, and it would therefore be un desirable to continue to publish them. The curiosity excited by the first attempts at the decipherment of the Egyptian and Assyrian texts appears now to be satisfied, and even students of the Old Testament are contented to allow questions which bear directly on Biblical history and interpretation to be settled by the small but enthusiastic body of workers in the fields of Egyptian and Assyrian research. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Records of the Past, Vol. 1: Being English Translations of the Ancient Monuments of Egypt and Western Asia The new series will, it is hoped, be found to be an improvement upon its predecessor in certain points. The translations will be provided with fuller introductions and notes, bearing more particularly upon the history, geography, and theology of the texts, and drawing attention to the illustrations they afford of the Scriptures of the Old Testament. The historical inscriptions, moreover, will be published, so far as is possible, in chronological order. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Records of the Past, Vol. 3: Being English Translations of the Ancient Monuments of Egypt and Western Asia IN presenting a new volume of the Records of the Past to the public, I feel it my duty to remind the reader of certain words which I wrote in the Preface to the first volume. I there said that the writer who wishes to make use of a translation from an Egyptian. Or Assyrian text for historical or contro versial purposes ought to know where it is certain, and where it is only possible, or at most probable. I therefore promised that in the present series of volumes doubtful words and expressions should be followed by a note of interrogation, the preceding word being put into italics where necessary that is to say, that the reader should be forewarned when ever the translator was himself in doubt as to the correctness of his rendering. So far as lies within the power of an editor, this promise has been fulfilled. But it must be remem bered that in many cases a translator may consider that the version he proposes admits of no question, whereas another scholar may take a different view. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Records of the Past, Vol. 4: Being English Translations of the Ancient Monuments of Egypt and Western Asia Thanks to my contributors, I have this year been able to redeem my promise of issuing two volumes of the Records of t/ze Past during the same season. The monumental records of the ancient oriental world are so numerous, and so much new material is continually being brought to light, that it is difficult for either contributors or editors to keep pace with the discoveries that are constantly being made. All we can h0pe to do is to lay before the public the most important of the documents which have thus been rescued from forgetfulness, and the latest and most authoritative renderings of the texts. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Music of the Most Ancient Nations, Particularly of the Assyrians, Egyptians, and Hebrews: With Special Reference to Recent Discoveries in Western Asia and in Egypt IT is not without hesitation that I offer to the public the present contribution to the history of music. I am fully aware that, in having to express myself in a language which is not my mother tongue, I labour under considerable disadvantage. Nevertheless, I venture to hope for the reader's indulgence on this point, for the following reasons. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
