Book Agrarianism and Capitalism in Early Georgia 1732 1743

Download or read book Agrarianism and Capitalism in Early Georgia 1732 1743 written by Jay Jordan Butler and published by Barkhuis. This book was released on 2011 with total page 155 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the full text of my Master's thesis presented to the University of Wyoming in 1949 (way back then!) in partial fulfillment of requirements for the degree of Master of Arts. If its subject may now seem rather dated and dry: we have nevertheless allowed ourselves to be persuaded by friends that there is still some merit to reprinting it. Our rendition of the Oglethorpe story is, of course, some two centuries out of date, and muchly enriched by Spalding and others. We trust that lovers of history will welcome even this small excerpt.

Book Origins of a Southern Mosaic

Download or read book Origins of a Southern Mosaic written by and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2021-10-15 with total page 175 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Origins of a Southern Mosaic explores the distinct, individual, and separate states that made up the colonial South. This volume contains four expanded lectures delivered in 1974 by Clarence L. Ver Steeg, professor of history at Northwestern University, as part of the annual Lamar Memorial Lectures at Mercer University. These lectures offer insight into the unique political and social backgrounds of Georgia and the Carolinas and the ways in which the individual backgrounds of these states come together to form a “quilt-like mosaic,” with identifiable enclaves that contribute a special quality to the whole. The Georgia Open History Library has been made possible in part by a major grant from the National Endowment for the Humanities: Democracy demands wisdom. Download or read book Mytho poetics at Work written by Rengenier Rittersma and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2018-01-03 with total page 430 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Mytho-poetics at Work Rengenier Rittersma offers an account of the posthumous fame of the Count of Egmont (1522-1568), whose public decapitation triggered the Dutch revolt. Drawing from numerous European sources – pamphlets, chronicles, and literature – this monograph tries to unravel why and how the alleged freedom fighter became an icon in European thought. It demonstrates that Egmont unfurled an evocative power over several centuries and cultural regions, as his name could be deliberately instrumentalized by different groups of people in order to corroborate their own confessional and political programs. In addition, this book offers the very first systematic study of the phenomenon of mytho-genesis and provides a conceptual model that can be applied to analogous historical myths.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Egmont: A Tragedy As to this volume, which forms the first part of the series of German Classics confided to my editorship by the Delegates of the Clarendon Press, I will be brief. My commentary to Egmont is the result of several years' study and labour. This drama is replete with historical allusions, far more so than is generally supposed. On account of this fact, I have carefully studied all the original sources, and have accordingly ex plained almost every passage which has an historical bearing. Book Comics in Translation

Download or read book Comics in Translation written by Federico Zanettin and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-12-22 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Comics are a pervasive art form and an intrinsic part of the cultural fabric of most countries. And yet, relatively little has been written on the translation of comics. Comics in Translation attempts to address this gap in the literature and to offer the first and most comprehensive account of various aspects of a diverse range of social practices subsumed under the label 'comics'. Focusing on the role played by translation in shaping graphic narratives that appear in various formats, different contributors examine various aspects of this popular phenomenon. Topics covered include the impact of globalization and localization processes on the ways in which translated comics are embedded in cultures; the import of editorial and publishing practices; textual strategies adopted in translating comics, including the translation of culture- and language-specific features; and the interplay between visual and verbal messages. Comics in translation examines comics that originate in different cultures, belong to quite different genres, and are aimed at readers of different age groups and cultural backgrounds, from Disney comics to Art Spiegelman's Maus, from Katsuhiro Ōtomo's Akira to Goscinny and Uderzo's Astérix. The contributions are based on first-hand research and exemplify a wide range of approaches. Languages covered include English, Italian, Spanish, Arabic, French, German, Japanese and Inuit. The volume features illustrations from the works discussed and an extensive annotated bibliography. Contributors include: Raffaella Baccolini, Nadine Celotti, Adele D'Arcangelo, Catherine Delesse, Elena Di Giovanni, Heike Elisabeth Jüngst, Valerio Rota, Carmen Valero-Garcés, Federico Zanettin and Jehan Zitawi.

Book De Renne

    Book Details:
  • Author : William Harris Bragg
  • Publisher : University of Georgia Press
  • Release : 1999
  • ISBN : 9780820320892
  • Pages : 792 pages

Download or read book De Renne written by William Harris Bragg and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 1999 with total page 792 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Much of what is known today of Georgia history was preserved through the diligent efforts of a single family. From Wormsloe, their ancestral plantation near Savannah, the De Rennes built an extraordinary collection of books and manuscripts on the history of the state and the Confederacy, much of which is now housed at the University of Georgia and the Museum of the Confederacy. This book focuses on their efforts in the years 1827 through 1970, conveying the passion and purpose with which they pursued their avocation. William Harris Bragg has mined a vast array of archival sources to present this engaging narrative of the De Renne family. He tells how wealthy bibliophile and philanthropist G. W. J. De Renne and his wife, Mary, set the precedent for the family’s accumulation of historic material, how their son established the Wymberley Jones De Renne Georgia Library that bears his name, and how his children in turn expanded upon that tradition. The De Rennes also printed limited editions of primary historical materials beginning with the series known as the Wormsloe Quartos. Bragg’s account of three generations of the De Renne family vividly records their achievements as it reconstructs their life at Wormsloe and follows them in their travels around the world. It provides glimpses into the dynamics and behavior of one of Georgia’s oldest and most prominent families and the evolution of the southern aristocracy. The book draws on newly available material to expand significantly on Ellis Merton Coulter’s 1955 work, Wormsloe, and provides the most complete account to date of the De Rennes. Beyond the story of the De Renne family, Bragg also reveals much about the history of collecting and of the antiquarian book trade, as well as of the evolution of Georgia historical documentation. Appendix material includes genealogical tables and lists of collections and publications, making De Renne: Three Generations of a Georgia Family an invaluable source for all scholars and aficionados of southern history.

Book The Wesleys and the Anglican Mission to Georgia 1735 1738

Download or read book The Wesleys and the Anglican Mission to Georgia 1735 1738 written by John Thomas Scott and published by Rowman & Littlefield. This book was released on 2020-10-23 with total page 391 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Wesleys and the Anglican Mission to Georgia, 1735-1738 considers the fascinating early history of a small group of men commissioned by trustees in England to spread Protestantism both to new settlers and indigenous people living in Georgia. Four minister-missionaries arrived in 1736, but after only two years these men detached themselves from the colonial enterprise, and the Mission effectively ended in 1738. Tracing the rise and fall of this endeavor, Scott’s study focuses on key figures in the history of the Mission including the layman, Charles Delamotte, and the ministers, John and Charles Wesley, Benjamin Ingham, and George Whitefield. In Scott’s innovative historical approach, neglected archival sources generate a detailed narrative account that reveals how these men’s personal experiences and personal networks had a significant impact on the inner-workings and trajectory of the Mission. The original group of missionaries who traveled to Georgia was composed of men already bound together by family relations, friendships, and shared lines of mentorship. Once in the colony, the missionaries’ prospects altered as they developed close ties with other missionaries (including a group of Moravians) and other settlers (John Wesley returned to England after his romantic relationship with Sophy Hopkey soured). Structures of imperialism, class, and race underlying colonial ideology informed the Anglican Mission in the era of trustee Georgia. The Wesleys and the Anglican Mission to Georgia enriches this historical picture by illuminating how a different set of intricacies, rooted in personal dynamics, was also integral to the events of this period. In Scott’s study, the history of the expansive eighteenth-century Atlantic world emerges as a riveting account of life unfolding on a local and individual level.
