Book excerpt: “Fourteen uniformly strong stories in [this] outstanding noir anthology devoted to Russia’s second city . . . an ideal backdrop for crime fiction.” —Publishers Weekly The origins of St. Petersburg’s rich noir tradition come from the city’s history, urban landscape, and the weather. The freezing winds from the Baltics give rise to hopelessness, despair, and the darkest of humor. The swamps upon which the city was built cloak it in a thick haze that inspires ghostly tales and furtive behaviors. In St. Petersburg Noir, you’ll find original stories by Lena Eltang, Sergei Nosov, Alexander Kudriavstev, Andrei Kivinov, Julia Belomlinsky, Natalia Kurchatova & Ksenia Venglinskaya, Anton Chizh, Vladimir Berezin, Andrei Rubanov, Vadim Levental, Anna Solovey, Mikhail Lialin, Pavel Krusanov, and Eugene Kogan. “The Russian soul is well suited to a style defined by dark, hard-edged moodiness in underground settings. With St. Petersburg, the tsar’s ‘Window on Europe,’ we get European-style existential angst as well—not to mention the scary sociopolitical realities of the new Russia . . . For all sophisticated crime fiction readers.” —Library Journal “A riveting collection. An insightful ‘tour’ of St. Petersburg. And a spellbinding introduction to Russian literature and perspective.” —Killer Nashville

Book Dantes Inferno

    Book Details:
  • Author : Sarah Lovett
  • Publisher : Simon and Schuster
  • Release : 2003-04-01
  • ISBN : 0743255267
  • Pages : 322 pages

Download or read book Dantes Inferno written by Sarah Lovett and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2003-04-01 with total page 322 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author of the critically acclaimed novels Dangerous Attachments and Acquired Motives is back with another spellbindingly original thriller featuring forensic psychiatrist Sylvia Strange. Now, in Dantes' Inferno, Sylvia is called to Los Angeles from her New Mexico home when a massive explosion blasts through the J. Paul Getty Museum, endangering children on a field trip and claiming two lives. The police peg notorious bomber John Dantes as the mastermind, even though he's in a maximum-security prison, serving a life sentence for another bombing he claims he didn't commit. Dr. Strange, a genius at accessing the most tortured psychiatric cases, is called in to evaluate Dantes. The prisoner is said to be unreachable -- and renowned for psychologically terrorizing his every visitor. But Dr. Strange forms a sudden, and unsettling, connection with Dantes. There's something about the enigmatic loner and his obsession with Los Angeles that both confounds and unnerves her. She's not at all convinced he's the man behind the bombs now ripping through the city -- but she is convinced he holds the key to finding the real bomber. The problem remains: how to get at Dantes? The police department's drug-and-interrogation campaign effectively stupefies the patient, and Dr. Strange's inability to "get results" troubles her deeply pragmatic supervisor, who in turn challenges her approach, her ability, and her intuition. As the death toll rises, so does public outcry, and sanctions against the fully demonized prisoner are further tightened. With the clock ticking on a bomb promised to be of epic proportions, Dr. Strange's sovereignty over her patient is slipping away -- along with, seemingly, her sanity. Dantes' Inferno is a hypnotic, heart-pounding journey to the soul of madness that reveals disturbing and darkly universal truths about human nature. It is Sarah Lovett's best thriller yet.

Book The Storyteller s Memory Palace

Download or read book The Storyteller s Memory Palace written by Hanne Bewernick and published by Peter Lang. This book was released on 2010 with total page 258 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Storytelling and remembering rely on similar practices: they both arrange images in an ordered structure. A story is initially memorised by the author in a mental structure which is transferred to the page via the author's choice of location, organisation and imagery. An interpretation that emphasises these features enhances the natural capacity for comprehension by mimicking the memory process. This study describes and uncovers memory systems (including the memory palace and the memory journey) in medieval texts. The ancient memory techniques are compared to cognitive psychology and used to interpret four modern novels. A practical method of interpretation is devised which provides the reader with direct access to a story by opening the door into the storyteller's memory palace.

Book Postmodern Counternarratives

Download or read book Postmodern Counternarratives written by Christopher Donovan and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2005-02-10 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a wide-ranging discussion of realism, postmodernism, literary theory and popular fiction before focusing on the careers of four prominent novelists. Despite wildly contrasting ambitions and agendas, all four grow progressively more sympathetic to the expectations of a mainstream literary audience, noting the increasingly neglected yet archetypal need for strong explanatory narrative even while remaining wary of its limitations, presumptions, and potential abuses. Exploring novels that manage to bridge the gap between accessible storytelling and literary theory, this book shows how contemporary authors reconcile values of posmodern literary experimentation and traditional realism.

Book Discovering Our Six Simple Truths and Their Rich Promise of Happiness Peace and a Life of Consequence

Download or read book Discovering Our Six Simple Truths and Their Rich Promise of Happiness Peace and a Life of Consequence written by Ralph E. Karanian and published by Page Publishing Inc. This book was released on 2024-06-04 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Whether you’re a recently minted graduate seeking advantage in the long game of life or you’re further along in your journey and questioning whether you’re best applying yourself to desired outcomes, my book likely contains your answer. In it I detail a simple self-management discipline structured around six common truths. Adhere to a personalized adaptation of them, and you’ll ultimately enjoy their rich promise of happiness, peace, and a life of consequence far more easily and sooner than me! Indeed, mine is an uplifting story of personal triumph, about how, after a frustrating period of confidence-robbing self-doubt, I regained my footing with this simple self-management hack which—among other things—memorialized precisely what success looked like for me. And now, after benefiting for the better part of my adult life from the self-management process I cobbled together, I’m ready to share its recipe. I’ll open up in greater depth about what motivated my search for and eventual identification of our six simple truths, give my take on what I view as a more-complete form of success, and identify and define each of the truths. Each truth is presented along with a small collection of my formative defining (and reinforcing) experiences, recounted in forty-one short, historically accurate stories. It’s through these stories that I show how my six simple truths crystalized for me so that you might also be moved (and equipped) to mine the lessons of your own formative experiences. From those lessons, and with my coaching, you too will be able to easily craft and realign with your very own custom-tailored truths. I’ll show you how. Imagine! A fulfilling and (mostly) regret-free life in which you confidently pursue all that is unequivocally identified and reaffirmed daily as priority for you—those people, activities, and things you just can’t imagine being without. After all, if “we are,” as Buddha suggests, “what we think,” it’s critical that we be thoughtful and strategic about that with which we fill our minds. As an everyman with a simple secret to share, I wrote my book such that mapping one’s long game (and gaining reassuring clarity for one’s daily choices) would be within easy reach for all. Remaining true then to the resultant affirmations of one’s six simple truths—with intention and application—assures we can all enjoy their rich promise of happiness, peace, and a life of consequence.
