Book excerpt: Single-ISA heterogeneous multi-core processors (SHMP) have become increasingly important due to their potential to significantly improve the execution efficiency for diverse workloads and thereby alleviate the power density constraints in Chip Multiprocessors (CMP). The importance of SHMP is further underscored by the fact that manufacturing defects and process variation could also cause single-ISA heterogeneity in CMPs even though the CMP is originally designed as homogeneous. However, to fully exploit the execution efficiency that SHMP has to offer, programs have to be efficiently mapped/scheduled to the appropriate cores such that the hardware resources of the cores match the resource demands of the programs, which is challenging and remains an open problem. This dissertation presents a comprehensive set of off-line and on-line techniques that leverage analytical performance modeling to bridge the gap between the workload diversity and the hardware heterogeneity. For the off-line scenario, this dissertation presents an efficient resource demand analysis framework that can estimate the resource demands of a program based on the inherent characteristics of the program without using any detailed simulation. Based on the estimated resource demands, this dissertation further proposes a multi-dimensional program-core matching technique that projects program resource demands and core configurations to a unified multi-dimensional space, and uses the weighted Euclidean distance between these two to identify the matching program-core pair. This dissertation also presents a dynamic and predictive application scheduler for SHMPs. It uses a set of hardware-efficient online profilers and an analytical performance model to simultaneously predict the application's performance on different cores. Based on the predicted performance, the scheduler identifies and enforces near-optimal application assignment for each scheduling interval without any trial runs or off-line profiling. Using only a few kilo-bytes of extra hardware, the proposed heterogeneity-aware scheduler improves the weighted speedup by 11.3% compared with the commodity OpenSolaris scheduler and by 6.8% compared with the best known research scheduler. Finally, this dissertation presents a predictive yet cost effective mechanism to manage intra-core and/or inter-core resources in dynamic SHMP. It also uses a set of hardware-efficient online profilers and an analytical performance model to predict the application's performance with different resource allocations. Based on the predicted performance, the resource allocator identifies and enforces near optimum resource partitions for each epoch without any trial runs. The experimental results show that the proposed predictive resource management framework could improve the weighted speedup of the CMP system by an average of 11.6% compared with the equal partition scheme, and 9.3% compared with existing reactive resource management scheme.

Book excerpt: By 2004, microprocessor design focused on multicore scaling--increasing the number of cores per die in each generation--as the primary strategy for improving performance. These multicore processors typically equip multiple memory subsystems to improve data throughput. In addition, these systems employ heterogeneous processors such as GPUs and heterogeneous memories like non-volatile memory to improve performance, capacity, and energy efficiency. With the increasing volume of hardware resources and system complexity caused by heterogeneity, future systems will require intelligent ways to manage hardware resources. Early research to improve performance and energy efficiency on heterogeneous, multi-core, multi-memory systems focused on tuning a single primitive or at best a few primitives in the systems. The key limitation of past efforts is their lack of a holistic approach to resource management that balances the tradeoff between performance and energy consumption. In addition, the shift from simple, homogeneous systems to these heterogeneous, multicore, multi-memory systems requires in-depth understanding of efficient resource management for scalable execution, including new models that capture the interchange between performance and energy, smarter resource management strategies, and novel low-level performance/energy tuning primitives and runtime systems. Tuning an application to control available resources efficiently has become a daunting challenge; managing resources in automation is still a dark art since the tradeoffs among programming, energy, and performance remain insufficiently understood. In this dissertation, I have developed theories, models, and resource management techniques to enable energy-efficient execution of parallel applications through thread and data management in these heterogeneous multi-core, multi-memory systems. I study the effect of dynamic concurrent throttling on the performance and energy of multi-core, non-uniform memory access (NUMA) systems. I use critical path analysis to quantify memory contention in the NUMA memory system and determine thread mappings. In addition, I implement a runtime system that combines concurrent throttling and a novel thread mapping algorithm to manage thread resources and improve energy efficient execution in multi-core, NUMA systems.

Book excerpt: The demand for heterogeneous computing, because of its performance and energy efficiency, has made on-chip heterogeneous chip multi-processors (HCMP) become the mainstream computing platform, as the recent trend shows in a wide spectrum of platforms from smartphone application processors to desktop and low-end server processors. The performance of on-chip GPUs is not yet comparable to that of discrete GPU cards, but vendors have integrated more powerful GPUs and this trend will continue in upcoming processors. In this architecture, several system resources are shared between CPUs and GPUs. The sharing of system resources enables easier and cheaper data transfer between CPUs and GPUs, but it also causes resource contention problems between cores. The resource sharing problem has existed since the homogeneous (CPU-only) chip-multi processor (CMP) was introduced. However, resource sharing in HCMPs shows different aspects because of the different nature of CPU and GPU cores. In order to solve the resource sharing problem in HCMPs, we consider efficient shared resource management schemes, in particular tackling the problem in shared last-level cache and interconnection network. In the thesis, we propose four resource sharing mechanisms: First, we propose an efficient cache sharing mechanism that exploits the different characteristics of CPU and GPU cores to effectively share cache space between them. Second, adaptive virtual channel partitioning for on-chip interconnection network is proposed to isolate inter-application interference. By partitioning virtual channels to CPUs and GPUs, we can prevent the interference problem while guaranteeing quality-of-service (QoS) for both cores. Third, we propose a dynamic frequency controlling mechanism to efficiently share system resources. When both cores are active, the degree of resource contention as well as the system throughput will be affected by the operating frequency of CPUs and GPUs. The proposed mechanism tries to find optimal operating frequencies for both cores, which reduces the resource contention while improving system throughput. Finally, we propose a second cache sharing mechanism that exploits GPU-semantic information. The programming and execution models of GPUs are more strict and easier than those of CPUs. Also, programmers are asked to provide more information to the hardware. By exploiting these characteristics, GPUs can energy-efficiently exercise the cache and simpler, but more efficient cache partitioning can be enabled for HCMPs.

Enabling task preemption on these architectures and migration of tasks between different resource types at run-time is not only key to improving the performance and energy consumption but also to enabling automatic scheduling methods for heterogeneous compute nodes. This thesis proposes novel techniques for run-time management of heterogeneous resources and enabling tasks to migrate between diverse hardware. It provides fundamental work towards future operating systems by discussing implications, limitations, and chances of the heterogeneity and introducing solutions for energy- and performance-efficient run-time systems. Scheduling methods to utilize heterogeneous systems by the use of a centralized scheduler are presented that show benefits over existing approaches in varying case studies.
