Book VLSI Systems and Computations

Download or read book VLSI Systems and Computations written by H.T. Kung and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The papers in this book were presented at the CMU Conference on VLSI Systems and Computations, held October 19-21, 1981 in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. The conference was organized by the Computer Science Department, Carnegie-Mellon University and was partially supported by the National Science Foundation and the Office of Naval Research. These proceedings focus on the theory and design of computational systems using VLSI. Until very recently, integrated-circuit research and development were concentrated in the device physics and fabrication design disciplines and in the integrated-circuit industry itself. Within the last few years, a community of researchers is growing to address issues closer to computer science: the relationship between computing structures and the physical structures that implement them; the specification and verification of computational procosses implemented in VLSI; the use of massively parallel computing made possible by VLSI; the design of special purpose computing architectures; and the changes in general-purpose computer architecture that VLSI makes possible. It is likely that the future exploitation of VLSI technology depends as much on structural and design innovations as on advances in fabrication technology. The book is divided into nine sections: - Invited Papers. Six distinguished researchers from industry and academia presented invited papers. - Models of Computation. The papers in this section deal with abstracting the properties of VLSI circuits into models that can be used to analyze the chip area, time or energy required for a particular computation.

Download or read book VLSI 91 written by Arne Halaas and published by North Holland. This book was released on 1992 with total page 528 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The major problem in VLSI is really the control of complexity. The hardest part is the control of autonomous yet interacting processes. We do not yet have satisfactory techniques for handling that sort of thing, but I think the techniques we need to develop are independent of whether you are programming or designing the chip. Sidney Michaelson, Initiator of the IFIP Working Group on VLSI. This proceedings, dedicated to the late Prof. Sidney Michaelson, who ten years ago established this IFIP Working Group, reflects the continuing interest in improving design tools and the wide range of engineering concerns surrounding the effective exploitation of VLSI.

Book Distributed Arithmetic Architecture for the Discrete Cosine Transform

Download or read book Distributed Arithmetic Architecture for the Discrete Cosine Transform written by Dwight Poplin and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Discrete Cosine Transform is used in many image and video compression standards. Many methods have been developed for efficiently computing the Discrete Cosine Transform including flowgraph algorithms, distributed arithmetic and two-dimensional decompositions. A new architecture based on distributed arithmetic is presented for computing the Discrete Cosine Transform and it's inverse. The main objective of the design is to minimize the area of the VLSI implementation while maintaining the throughput necessary for video and image compression standards such as MPEG and JPEG. Several improvements have been made compared to previously published distributed arithmetic architectures. These include elimination of four lookup tables and implementation of the lookup tables using logic instead of ROM. A model of the proposed architecture was written in C. The model was used to verify the accuracy of the architecture and to do JPEG compression on a series of test images. Behavioral simulations were performed with a hardware model written in the Verilog hardware description language. These behavioral simulations verify that the hardware implementation matches the C model. The model was synthesized using the Synopsis synthesis tool. The gate count and clock rate of the design were estimated using the synthesis results.

Book Serial Data Computation

Download or read book Serial Data Computation written by Stewart G. Smith and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is concerned with advances in serial-data computa tional architectures, and the CAD tools for their implementation in silicon. The bit-serial tradition at Edinburgh University (EU) stretches back some 6 years to the conception of the FIRST silicon compiler. FIRST owes much of its inspiration to Dick Lyon, then at Xerox P ARC, who proposed a 'structured-design' methodology for construction of signal processing systems from bit-serial building blocks. Based on an nMOS cell-library, FIRST automates much of Lyon's physical design process. More recently, we began to feel that FIRST should be able to exploit more modern technologies. Before this could be achieved, we were faced with a massive manual re-design task, i. e. the porting of FIRST cell-library to a new technology. As it was to avoid such tasks that FIRST was conceived in the first place, we decided to move the level of user-specification much nearer to the silicon level (while still hiding details of transistor circuit design, place and route etc. , from the user), and by so doing, enable the specification of more functionally powerful libraries in technology-free form. The results of this work are in evidence as advances in serial-data design techniques, and the SECOND silicon compiler, introduced later in this book. These achievements could not have been accomplished without help from various sources. We take this opportunity to thank Profs.
