Book Efficiency Analysis of Public Sector Banks in India

Download or read book Efficiency Analysis of Public Sector Banks in India written by Shradha Malhotra Banga and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012-05 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The banking sector is one of the most dynamic sectors which face many changes in its working: both internal as well as external. The banks face the challenge of being efficient in times of boom and bust. Thus they are required to be efficient in every respect. The Reserve Bank of India conducts supervision of commercial banks to ensure that the commercial banks in India perform efficiently. One of the popular methods of supervision is CAMEL Model. In this analysis the financial statements of banks are assessed for: Capital Adequacy, Asset Quality, Management Efficiency, Earnings Quality and Liquidity. The CAMEL Model is abbreviation of the above 5 financial components studied for analyzing efficiency of a bank. These 5 components comprise 23 ratios. The efficiency study on the basis of CAMEL model is only annual and that is also not made public. This research work analyzes rate of change in these 23 ratios for 28 Public Sector Banks over a period of 9 years i.e. from 2000 to 2008 in order to know 'if changes brought about in banking sector in this post-reform period of Indian Economy are towards efficiency or not'.

Book excerpt: A productive and efficient banking industry plays a vital role in financial intermediation for accelerating the economic growth. In recent years, the competition among public sector, private sector and foreign banks has increased tremendously in India. This paper aims to study the change in the productivity and efficiency of Public Sector Banks (PSBs) in India after the financial crisis of 2008. Non-parametric Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) approach is used to study the productivity and efficiency change of 26 PSBs operating in India. The results show that there is a wide variation of productivity and efficiency change among PSBs, and a few PSBs are suffering from deterioration of efficiency, which requires special remedial policy approach.

Book Deregulation and Efficiency of Indian Banks

Download or read book Deregulation and Efficiency of Indian Banks written by Sunil Kumar and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-10-23 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The goal of this book is to assess the efficacy of India’s financial deregulation programme by analyzing the developments in cost efficiency and total factor productivity growth across different ownership types and size classes in the banking sector over the post-deregulation years. The work also gauges the impact of inclusion or exclusion of a proxy for non-traditional activities on the cost efficiency estimates for Indian banks, and ranking of distinct ownership groups. It also investigates the hitherto neglected aspect of the nature of returns-to-scale in the Indian banking industry. In addition, the work explores the key bank-specific factors that explain the inter-bank variations in efficiency and productivity growth. Overall, the empirical results of this work allow us to ascertain whether the gradualist approach to reforming the banking system in a developing economy like India has yielded the most significant policy goal of achieving efficiency and productivity gains. The authors believe that the findings of this book could give useful policy directions and suggestions to other developing economies that have embarked on a deregulation path or are contemplating doing so.

Book A Comparative Study on Efficiency of Selected Public Sector Banks in India

Download or read book A Comparative Study on Efficiency of Selected Public Sector Banks in India written by Kwadwo Boateng and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 12 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The study was conducted to compare the efficiency levels of selected 12 public sector banks (PSBs) in India. Public sector banks are banks with more than 50% shares owned by the government. Data for seven years was compiled from the annual reports of these banks for computation of the efficiency ratios for the analysis. The ratios were grouped into management and employee efficiencies. The management efficiency ratios included net interest margin, non-interest income margin, and operating profit to total assets. The employee efficiency ratios on the other hand includes profit per employee, business per employee, wages to total expenses, and wages to total income. The results from the ANOVA analysis of the management efficiency measures indicated that all the 12 selected PSBs banks have unequal efficiency levels. The results from the ANOVA analysis of the employee efficiency measures also indicated that all banks have unequal level of employee efficiency with the exception of wages to income ratio, which was equal among the banks. It was therefore recommended, that public sector banks in India must improve upon both management and employee efficiencies of their respective banks in order to increase productivity and for that matter profitability.

Book Banking Reforms and Efficiency of Public Sector Banks in India

Download or read book Banking Reforms and Efficiency of Public Sector Banks in India written by Rachita Gulati and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 124 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book deals with the issue of convergence in efficiency levels among Indian public sector banks (PSBs) during the post-reforms. To accomplish the task of measuring technical efficiency for individual PSBs, we have used the increasing popular methodology of Data Envelopment Analysis. Further, we have utilized the traditional cross-sectional regression approach for investigating the presence of sigma- and beta-convergence in efficiency levels of PSBs. The empirical results indicate that the majority of PSBs have observed an ascent in technical efficiency during the post-reforms years. Further, the study confirms a presence of convergence phenomenon in the Indian public sector banking industry. This book will be useful for the research scholars intending to work on the efficiency and productivity analysis.

Book Reforms and Efficiency in Public Sector Banks in India

Download or read book Reforms and Efficiency in Public Sector Banks in India written by Geetu Gupta and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2015-08-10 with total page 216 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To see the Efficiency in light of CAMEL model and DEA model to estimate Techical, Allocative and Cost efficiency in Indian Public Sector Banks. This book helps to estimate and analysis these issues in light of reforms in Banking Sector from 1991. The much-publicized fact that Public Sector Banks are inefficient is based on a piecemeal analysis in the form of simple, static, partial and isolated ratios having some hidden and often misconceived assumptions about the structure. There is an urgent need of the time to go in for a system-wide analysis to explore the intricacies of the complex system that has grown over the years.

Book Assessing Performance of Banks in India Fifty Years After Nationalization

Download or read book Assessing Performance of Banks in India Fifty Years After Nationalization written by Atanu Sengupta and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-04-21 with total page 243 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book assesses the performance of banks in India over the past several decades, and discusses their current status after fifty years of nationalization. The performance of different categories of banks is evaluated by employing both the traditional ratio analysis and more sophisticated efficiency techniques. The book also explores the market conditions under which Indian banks operate. Going beyond a formal banking study, the book also investigates the causes of the widespread presence of informal credit in parallel to its formal banking counterpart. This approach makes it more comprehensive, unique and closer to the real world. After 50 years of nationalization, India’s banking sector is at a crossroads, given the huge and unabated non-performing assets and talks of consolidation. This book, encompassing both the formal and the predominantly ‘trust-based’ informal credit system, provides essential insights for bankers and policymakers, which will be invaluable in their endeavours to implement meaningful changes. It may also spark new research in the fields of banking performance and efficiency analysis. Lastly, the book not only has significant implications for students of economics, banking, finance and management, but also offers an important resource to support training courses for banking personnel in India.

Download or read book Efficiency Profitability Relationship of Indian Public Sector Banks written by Sourabh Singha Roy and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This article is an attempt to explore the relationship between Technical Efficiency (TE) and profitability of 27 Public Sector Banks (PSBs) based on cross section data of 2015. The Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) has been used to calculate the TE score. It is observed that the average TE score of the industry is 85.8 percent. This result indicates that the Indian PSBs have the capacity of producing 1.16 as much output by using same level of inputs. It is also found that the operating efficiency of State Bank of India Group is higher than the Non-State Bank of India Group. The investigation of efficiency-profitability matrix on the basis of efficiency scores and Return on Assets (ROA) revealed that the resource utilization process of 14 banks are not satisfactory. These banks are falling in the 'lucky' and 'underdog' quadrants of the matrix. 7 Indian PSBs occupied the position of the 'ace' quadrant. These banks are the role models of other inefficient banks. Out of these 7 'ace' banks 4 banks are in the 'superstar' category whose TE scores is one and ROA is also above average. Further investigation established that the State Bank of Hyderabad is the most efficient bank in the industry and this bank may be awarded as the 'Superstar' of the Indian Public Sector Banking Industry.

Book Banking Sector Reforms in India and Performance Evaluation of Commercial Banks

Download or read book Banking Sector Reforms in India and Performance Evaluation of Commercial Banks written by Debaprosanna Nandy and published by Universal-Publishers. This book was released on 2010-07-29 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Committee on Financial System (CFS), popularly known as Narasimham Committee, was set up in 1991 to make recommendations for bringing about the necessary reforms in the financial sector. Narasimham Committee appraised and acknowledged the success and progress of Indian banks since the major banks were nationalized on 19 July 1969. Unfortunately, the developments were witnessed only in the field of expansion and spread of bank branches, generation of huge employment and mobilization of savings rather than also in improvement in efficiency. Besides, corruption, fraud, misutilization in public money, outdated technology, and politicization in policy making were found to be major drawbacks in the real progress of the banks. As the banking sector plays an important and crucial role in the economy of a country for its stabilization and balanced growth, major reforms were urgently needed, after 22 years of nationalization, to revive Indian banks. This was not only in the field of profitability, but also in the overall efficiency, viz., better management of non-performing assets (NPAs), satisfying capital requirements, increased cost effectiveness and control, enhanced customer service, improved technology, establishing competitive interest rate, effective man-power planning, introduction of asset-liability management, better productivity, launching new products, and becoming more competent to face the upcoming challenges and competition from foreign as well as private sector banks in the era of globalization and liberalization. The objectives of the study are to examine the need and relevance of reforms in Indian banks, to assess the efficiency and profitability of Indian banks during reforms from different perspectives, to discuss various issues of NPA management in the light of reforms, to measure the performance of the banks of West Bengal during the reforms, to analyse the role of information technology and its relevancy in Indian banks in the era of reforms, and to impart necessary suggestions for the improvement of the efficiency and profitability of Indian banks.

Book Efficiency and Profitability of Public and Private Sector Banks in India

Download or read book Efficiency and Profitability of Public and Private Sector Banks in India written by Ravi Inder Singh and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper examines the inter-bank relative efficiency of public and private sector commercial banks in India. This study includes analysis of slacks which remain to be explored for getting a clear picture about the causes of inefficiency. Though the issue is important, no recent study, to the best of our knowledge, has addressed it. Data Envelopment Analysis (DEA) approach has been used to examine the efficiency level achieved and to identify the slacks. The results reveal that private (Indian) sector banks are relatively more efficient compared to public sector banks. It was found that State Bank of Hyderabad, Bank of Maharashtra, Central Bank of India, United Bank of India, Dhanlaxmi Bank and ING Vysya could not achieve 100% efficiency even in a single year, whereas the Federal Bank, HDFC Bank, Kotak Mahindra Bank, Nainital Bank and Yes Bank Ltd., all private sector banks, achieved full efficiency in all the ten years. The strategies suggested in this study to the comparatively less efficient banks would help them not only in improving their efficiency, but also in lowering the cost of their products for the overall benefit of their customers. Efficiency is also found to be directly affecting the profitability of banks.
