Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine relationships among perceptions of professional learning communities, school academic optimism, and student achievement in Alabama middle and high schools. Quantitative data were collected through online surveys and hard copy surveys during the spring of 2012. The study was driven by research questions involving the relationship between teachers' and principals' perceptions that their school is a learning community and the level of academic optimism in those schools; the relationship between teachers' and principals' perceptions their school is a learning community and the level of student achievement; the comparison of school levels with teachers' and principals' perceptions; and the joint contribution of the perceptions of professional learning communities (PLCs) and academic optimism on student achievement. Two surveys were used: the School Professional Staff as Learning Community Questionnaire (SPSLCQ) and the School Academic Optimism Survey (SAOS), measuring participants' perceptions of their schools as learning communities and participants' perceptions of the level of academic optimism at their schools, respectively. Seven hundred three teachers and administrators from 59 schools across the state of Alabama were surveyed. Data were compared using correlations, t-tests, and regression analyses. Results confirmed findings from prior research regarding the relationship between academic optimism and student achievement. In addition, evidence showed that there is a positive, significant correlation between the perceptions of PLCs and academic optimism. Results of this study give school leaders tools with which to address the factors that lead to improved teacher efficacy and academic emphasis and thus increased student achievement.

Book excerpt: The study was to determine the impact of a Professional Learning Community on student achievement as measured by the state's criterion referenced reading and mathematics achievement tests. Data for this study were extracted from the school district's student database. Two cohorts of 90 students each were randomly selected from a population of approximately 600 students in 3 schools that participated in a Professional Learning Community (treatment) and 3 schools that did not (control). Professional Learning Communities known as PLCs, can serve as a major theoretical framework to promote the improvement of classroom teachers' instructional practice, teacher effectiveness and student achievement. Reading and mathemtics mean scale scores were extracted at three time points (year 1, year 2, and year 3) across three grades (grade 3, grade 4 and grade 5). Test for equality of variance found that no statistically significant difference existed between the mean scale scores of the two cohorts at the beginning of the study. The findings revealed that both cohorts trend toward increased academic achievement from year to year individually; however, when compared to each other, no statistically significant difference existed. Further research is indicated to examine each PLC for implementation, support and leadership as they relate to the PLC and a focus on instruction and learning.

Book excerpt: This dissertation evaluated the implementation of professional learning communities in a large suburban school district in North Carolina. The presence of shared and supportive leadership, shared values and vision, collective learning and application, shared personal practice, supportive conditions for relationships, and supportive conditions for structures are all attributes that were assessed to determine the degree of implementation. -- A quantitative and qualitative program evaluation was conducted using the CIPP evaluation model to determine the degree of implementation of professional learning communities and whether or not the implementation has had an impact on student achievement based on state end of course test results. The CIPP model of program evaluation is a systematic process to evaluate the context, input, process and product of a particular program to determine the effectiveness of the program. Teacher members of the Algebra I, English 9, and Biology professional learning communities at each of the six high schools were asked to complete the Professional Learning Communities Assessment - Revised survey. The researcher also requested to observe a sample of professional learning community meetings with these teachers to determine whether or not there is evidence that certain characteristics of the professional learning community concept exist. Interviews were conducted with each of the 6 principals, the assistant superintendent of secondary education and the facilitator of professional development.

Book excerpt: This descriptive case study closely examined a professional learning community in an Arkansas middle school. The site was selected because the school was removed from the state's school improvement list after implementing professional learning communities. The purpose of the study was to determine how the design of a professional learning community impacts teacher instruction in a middle school setting. The literature reviewed included historical perspective, definitions and characteristics of professional learning communities, teacher professional development, and teacher effect on student achievement. Eight teachers, one principal, and one instructional facilitator were interviewed about the professional learning communities in their school. The interviews focused on the characteristics of professional learning communities and the perceived impact of professional learning communities on instructional practices. Observations of professional learning community meetings were conducted, and related documents were also reviewed. The data revealed that a culture of collaboration, data-driven decisions, and supportive leadership impact instruction. Combined, these three factors created the conditions for teachers to build their capacity and provide better instruction to students. The data also revealed that the annual school-wide book studies were an important aspect of professional development for the teachers at this school; many described it as the most beneficial professional learning community strategy utilized by the school.

Book excerpt: Research into professional learning communities (PLCs) indicates consistently that when such communities involve in-school educators collaboratively inquiring into the impact of teaching practice on student learning, they have the potential to develop teacher capacity and enhance student outcomes. However, the potential benefits of PLCs are tempered by varied interpretations, mixed outcomes and the many challenges of implementation, including the impact of the people involved, such as school leaders, as well as organisational and procedural factors. Drawing on the international research on PLCs, this study examined PLCs in New Zealand secondary school contexts. It explored in-school educators' perceptions of the extent to which PLC characteristics were evident in school and/or department professional learning, perceived effectiveness of key characteristics of PLCs identified in the literature and the conditions which participants believed enabled or inhibited PLC implementation. Respondents from four secondary schools, all of which had introduced PLCs, were invited to participate in the case study. The data collected through questionnaires and interviews were mainly qualitative, which allowed for a rich and deep exploration of in-school educators' beliefs, values and experiences. Some quantitative data analysis was also utilised, to enable an overview of respondents' perceptions of characteristics of PLCs and conditions for effectiveness. The findings indicated that the seven PLC characteristics identified in the literature and explored in relation to the practice of these schools were perceived to be effective for improving teaching and learning. However, a number of these characteristics did not appear to be consistent with the participants' descriptions of what was happening in their schools. Despite the high effectiveness ratings, some PLC characteristics drew mixed responses or appeared to be evident only at a surface level in some situations. The study also found that conditions identified most frequently as enablers and inhibitors to PLC functioning were considered to be related to qualities of school leadership, teacher attitudes towards professional learning and organisational factors, such as the allocation of time and workload issues. The findings of the study indicate that for PLCs to be effective in the New Zealand secondary school context, leaders need to be a driving force, actively developing a school environment and culture that is conducive to on-going teacher learning.
