Book Efficacy of Multipurpose Contact Lens Solutions

Download or read book Efficacy of Multipurpose Contact Lens Solutions written by Stephen Adnan Atallah and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Contact lens wear is a growing trend in our society. More and more individuals are opting out of wearing traditional glasses and trying out contact lenses. Contact lenses provide many great benefits to patients, for example such as sharper vision, decreased distortion, more comfortable during exercise and greater cosmetic appeal to name a few. Improved vision is not the only reason patients chose to wear contacts, many patients report greater self-esteem when wearing contacts because they are believed to be more aesthetically pleasing. However, just as any new advancement when it comes to our health there are always risks. Contact lenses if not cared for properly when inserting and removing drastic consequences can occur, some possibly vision threatening. This is why it is essential that patients follow the recommendations presented by manufacturers for disinfecting contact lenses. However, it is not enough for patients to follow the proper instructions. The multipurpose contact lens solutions that are available today must be effective when eliminating microbial organisms on the contact lens. This literature review will analyze the how affective the popular multipurpose solutions are at eliminating microbial organisms. A new contact lens solution will also be presented in this review.

Book Multipurpose Solution Efficacy Against Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Biofilm Under Compliant and Non compliant Conditions

Download or read book Multipurpose Solution Efficacy Against Pseudomonas Aeruginosa Biofilm Under Compliant and Non compliant Conditions written by Fred Lee and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Patient non-compliance with contact lens care is strongly associated with lens and/or lens case microbial contamination and possibly microbial keratitis. The primary causative agent of contact lens-related microbial keratitis is Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Microbial contamination of contact lenses is often seen as a biofilm, which has been shown to form regardless of how compliant a patient is with their lens care regimen. Our study analyzed the presence of P. aeruginosa bacterial biofilm on the surface of silicone hydrogel lenses under compliant and non compliant conditions. Biofilm analysis was performed with a protocol utilizing crystal violet staining, spectrophotometry and gross observation of staining. We had difficulty in obtaining consistent stain uptake by the contact lenses. The multipurpose solutions may have changed the binding properties of the lenses and affected their interaction with the stain. Experimental lenses exhibited varying degrees of visible, isolated deposition staining, assumed to be bacterial biofilm since it was present on lenses among all the compliant and non-compliant groups, but not on control lenses. This assumed biofilm deposition was present regardless of the level of compliance. This was most apparent on the Opti-Free'" RepieniSHTM compliant (OA) and non-compliant (OB) lenses and least apparent on the Equate" compliant (EA) and non-compliant (EB) lenses. These results may indicate a need for multipurpose solutions to be tested against bacterial biofilm and for researching effective ways of inhibiting biofilm formation on contact lens products. This may help decrease the risk of microbial keratitis among contact lens patient.

Book The Determination of Whether Or Not Leaving the Cap Off a Bottle of Contact Lens Solution Affects the Preservative s Effectiveness Against Pseudomonas Aeruginosa

Download or read book The Determination of Whether Or Not Leaving the Cap Off a Bottle of Contact Lens Solution Affects the Preservative s Effectiveness Against Pseudomonas Aeruginosa written by Bryan Womack and published by . This book was released on 2008 with total page 5 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Background. In the last twenty years, there has been a noticeable increase in the number of microbial infections in contact lens wearers. Therefore proper use of contact lens solutions is important and detrimental to the health of a patient’s eye. For this reason it is important to understand all aspects of the contact lens solution. This study determined whether or not leaving the bottle of solution uncapped will have any affect on the preservative’ effectiveness against the bacteria Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Methods. A bottle of Opti-Free Replenish had it cap removed and was tested a total of five times. A 2 mL sample was taken from the test bottle, as well as a control bottle, and inoculated with the bacterium and allowed to soak for 8 hrs in a sterile capped test tube. To determine how much of the bacteria survived the sample was serial diluted. A blood agar plate was made for each dilution and a these plates were incubated for twenty-four hours. After the incubation plates were examined and bacteria on each individual plate were counted and recorded. Results. There was no statistically significant difference (p=.693) between the test bottle and the control bottle. However, during one of the last tests there showed definite log difference between the two bottle that warrants further investigation. Discussion. Both bottles performed equally through out the study and both bottles performed within the guidelines set forth by the International Standardization Organization. This meant that each bottle had a reduction in the amount of bacteria greater or equal to a 3 log reduction.
