Book excerpt: The efforts spent on many a scientific book cannot be justified, no matter how many words are said about it. The opposite is true for this book and a few brief remarks upon its publication. Within a short period of time, short even by all present standards, gel chromatography has gone through a development and experienced an acceptance that is unknown to any other method. From experience, the new and unique separation technique is today known and liked in all laboratories that are concerned with substances of high molecular weight; in others, the technique is known from hearsay, the least. Soon it became evident that a comprehensive coverage of the conceptual development, the theoretical principles, and the experimental technique of the new method would be desirable. This coverage is now offered by the book of an expert. Its author has personally participated in the development from its beginning and helped to promote it. He has made possible the gel chromatography, also of proteins, on thin layer plates; for lipophilic substances he has contributed considerably to the transition from water to organic solvent systems and developed theoretical concepts for a better understanding of the effects that are responsible for the separation. The book, so it appears to me, is pointing in new directions. The reader does not only expect a clear presentation of facts but also that of instructions for practical applications. Both these expectations have been met by the expert.

Book Quality Assurance for SPECT Systems

Download or read book Quality Assurance for SPECT Systems written by and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Quality assurance (QA) is a crucial part of all aspects of nuclear medicine practice. The objective of this publication is to provide professionals in nuclear medicine centers with detailed quality control test procedures for the scintillation camera and computer system. Three types of quality tests are described in detail: acceptance, reference and routine tests for the scintillation camera, both in single and multiple head configurations, for obtaining images and quantitative data in planar imaging mode; whole body imaging mode; and single-photon emission computed tomography (SPECT). The publication is primarily intended to be of use to medical physicists, technologists, and other healthcare professionals who are responsible for ensuring optimal performance of imaging instruments, particularly SPECT systems. It may also be useful to managers, clinicians, and other decision-makers who are responsible for implementing quality assurance and quality control programs in nuclear medicine c

Book An Introduction to Differential Manifolds

Download or read book An Introduction to Differential Manifolds written by Jacques Lafontaine and published by Springer. This book was released on 2015-07-29 with total page 408 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is an introduction to differential manifolds. It gives solid preliminaries for more advanced topics: Riemannian manifolds, differential topology, Lie theory. It presupposes little background: the reader is only expected to master basic differential calculus, and a little point-set topology. The book covers the main topics of differential geometry: manifolds, tangent space, vector fields, differential forms, Lie groups, and a few more sophisticated topics such as de Rham cohomology, degree theory and the Gauss-Bonnet theorem for surfaces. Its ambition is to give solid foundations. In particular, the introduction of “abstract” notions such as manifolds or differential forms is motivated via questions and examples from mathematics or theoretical physics. More than 150 exercises, some of them easy and classical, some others more sophisticated, will help the beginner as well as the more expert reader. Solutions are provided for most of them. The book should be of interest to various readers: undergraduate and graduate students for a first contact to differential manifolds, mathematicians from other fields and physicists who wish to acquire some feeling about this beautiful theory. The original French text Introduction aux variétés différentielles has been a best-seller in its category in France for many years. Jacques Lafontaine was successively assistant Professor at Paris Diderot University and Professor at the University of Montpellier, where he is presently emeritus. His main research interests are Riemannian and pseudo-Riemannian geometry, including some aspects of mathematical relativity. Besides his personal research articles, he was involved in several textbooks and research monographs.

Book Minimum Competence in Scientific English

Download or read book Minimum Competence in Scientific English written by Susan Blattès and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 254 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.

Book Vitamins in Medicine

Download or read book Vitamins in Medicine written by Brian Michael Barker and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 372 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: An advanced technical text (in 2 volumes) for college medical students and nutrition scientists presents 17 review articles on the integration of historical knowledge and recent findings in the areas of physiological roles of vitamins and the pathology of vitamin deficiency diseases. Fifteen of the articles discuss the discovery, comprehensive metabolic aspects, sources, and disease associations of individual vitamins: vitamins A, B6, B12, (the cobalamins), C, D, E, F (essential fatty acids) K, and P, (the bioflavonoids), and pantothenic acid, folates, biotin, thiamin, riboflavin, and niacin. The remaining articles deal with vitamin dietary requirements, recommendations, and intake, and the effects of food processing on vitamins. (wz).

Book Lipoproteins and the Pathogenesis of Atherosclerosis

Download or read book Lipoproteins and the Pathogenesis of Atherosclerosis written by James Shepherd and published by . This book was released on 1991 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Lipoprotein disorders are among the most common metabolic derangements encountered in industrialised countries. Figures for the United States of America, for example, reveal that more than half of the adult population have too high plasma cholesterol levels. It is not surprising that ischaemic heart disease remains the commonest cause of death in the western world. This volume focuses on the origin of the problem by exploring the factors which govern the structure and metabolism of human plasma lipoproteins and those which regulate lipoprotein interaction with the developing atherosclerotic lesion. Secondly, recent advances in the pharmaceutical industry have led to the development of powerful and effective new lipid lowering drugs. The practising physician needs to know when to use these agents and what to expect of them. This topic is examined in some detail to provide a basis for rational lipid lowering pharmacotherapy if dietary intervention fails. The implementation of effective intervention programs offers the prospect of reducing the impact of heart disease and improving the quality and expectation of life in the community.
