Book Effects of Timber Harvesting on Upland Oak Forests in the Missouri Ozarks

Download or read book Effects of Timber Harvesting on Upland Oak Forests in the Missouri Ozarks written by Qi Yao and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Oak decline-induced mortality and failure of oak regeneration have become a concern in upland oak forests in the Missouri Ozarks. This project investigated the effects of timber harvesting on both oak regeneration and mortality of oak residuals following a suite of harvesting treatments in the Missouri Ozarks based on the sixteen-year monitoring data from the Missouri Ozark Forest Ecosystem Project (MOFEP). On dry sites by year 10, clearcutting improved the density of oak reproduction the most, and intermediate cutting and clearcutting increased the proportion of black oak reproduction by 2% and 3%, respectively in the composition of the forests in the study area. Single-tree selection exacerbated the mortality of oak residuals, group selection and no harvesting had a similar effect on oak residuals. Intermediate cutting improved the survival of residuals the most. This project suggested well designed silvicultural practices would likely reduce oak mortality and increase understory oak reproduction.

Book The Effects of Silvicultural Treatments on Oak Height and Basal Diameter Growth and Oak Regeneration Abundance Following a Woody Biomass Removal During Harvest in the Missouri Ozarks

Download or read book The Effects of Silvicultural Treatments on Oak Height and Basal Diameter Growth and Oak Regeneration Abundance Following a Woody Biomass Removal During Harvest in the Missouri Ozarks written by Charles L. Hansen and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following a biomass harvest in the Missouri Ozarks, oak stump sprouts and seedling sprouts can significantly contribute to the presence of oaks in the future stand. A study to evaluate oak regeneration dynamics directly following a biomass harvest was initiated on the University Forest Conservation Area in Butler County, Missouri in the spring of 2009. Three hundred permanent subplots were established directly following the harvest to monitor 530 newly regenerated oak and hickory trees. The height and basal diameter of the trees were monitored for 2 consecutive growing seasons. These measurements were used to produce a logistic regression model to determine the probability these trees would have of obtaining specific average annual height growth thresholds. Results from a logistic regression analysis of the silvicultural study indicate that as over story density increases the probability of understory trees achieving a higher annual height growth threshold significantly decreases. When the over story basal area was reduced below 50 square feet per acre or less significant increases in height and basal diameter were observed. However, as over story basal area exceeded 50 square feet per acre especially once basal area surpassed 100 square feet per acre a significant decrease in height growth of understory trees was observed.

Book Factors Influencing Upland Oak Advance Reproduction in the Missouri Ozarks

Download or read book Factors Influencing Upland Oak Advance Reproduction in the Missouri Ozarks written by Jason Lee Villwock and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 61 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Successful oak stand regeneration requires an abundance of well developed advance reproduction. Past studies have found that oak reproduction varies on upland landscapes by inferred measures of nutrient and water supply such as site index, slope-aspect, and slope position. There is a need to relate oak reproduction to soil nutrient and water supply parameters to better understand variations in oak reproduction on upland landscapes. On the USDA Forest Service, Sinkin Experimental Forest, located in the Missouri Ozarks, we used regression models for estimating the advance reproduction density of red oaks, white oaks, and non-oaks. The abundance of red oak advance reproduction was smaller on northeast-facing slopes and inversely related to soil plant available water capacity (AWC) and soil base saturation (BS) suggesting a greater accumulation on sites having both a lesser water and nutrient supply. The abundance of non-oaks was greater on northeast-facing slopes and positively related to site index and Bs suggesting a greater accumulation on sites having a greater site quality and nutrient supply. There were no significant models relating these factors to the abundance of white oak advance reproduction however it was significantly (P [lesser than] 0.05) correlated to the abundance of red oak advance reproduction.

Book Impacts of Forest Management on Medicinal Herbs in the Missouri Ozarks

Download or read book Impacts of Forest Management on Medicinal Herbs in the Missouri Ozarks written by Badger Baldwin Johnson and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page 108 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As agroforestry becomes more accepted in the Midwestern US, understanding how non-timber forest product growth is impacted by forest management practice becomes increasingly important. Timber harvest and prescribed fires are common forest management practices in the Central Hardwoods Region, and canopy gaps commonly result from these practices. Three studies were conducted in central and southern Missouri to assess the impacts of forest management. One of the studies focused on the effects of discrete canopy gaps on the height, reproduction and mortality of transplanted Actaea racemosa L., Allium tricoccum Aiton, Collinsonia canadensis L. and Hydrastis canadensis L. This study was replicated at the Horticulture and Agroforestry Research Center in New Franklin, MO as well as the Doug Allen Project Site in Gravois Mills, Missouri. Results indicate that small canopy gaps may prove beneficial for increasing rates of photosynthesis, as well as the height and sexual reproduction of the study species. Using ground flora cover data from the Missouri Ozark Forest Ecosystem Project, a second study was conducted on the relationships (P [less than] 0.05) between size and abundance of eleven herb species with ecological site types and the following timber harvest types: clearcutting, group selection, single-tree selection and intermediate thinning timber and no harvest (control). The goals were to ascertain whether ecological site descriptions can be used in conjunction with silvicultural management to select and manage sites for forest farming.Study species included Actaea racemosa L., Apocynum cannabinum L., Aristolochia serpentaria L., Dioscorea quaternata J.F. Gmel., Echinacea simulata R.L. McGregor, Geranium maculatum L., Hydrastis canadensis L., Parthenium integrifolium L., Podophyllum peltatum L., Sanguinaria canadensis L. and Tephrosia virginiana (L.) Pers. Uneven-aged management harvest types were significantly positively related to the percent cover and/or frequency of A. racemosa, E. simulata, G. maculatum, H. canadensis, P. peltatum and S. canadensis. Percent covers and/or frequencies of A. racemosa, A. cannabinum and A. serpentaria were significantly , positively related to mesic ESDs only, while the percent covers and/or frequencies of D. quaternata, G. maculatum and P. integrifolium were significantly , positively related to specific mesic and specific xeric ESDs. A third study was conducted using the ground flora cover data from The Nature Conservancy's Chilton Creek Management Area, to assess significant (P [less than] 0.05) relationships between size and abundance of eight herb species with different ecological site descriptions under prescribed fire management. Goals for the study included identifying forest farming sites and planning prescribed fire management that, paired together, might stimulate growth of these plants. Study species included Actaea racemosa L., Apocynum cannabinum L., Aristolochia serpentaria L., Dioscorea quaternata J.F. Gmel., Geranium maculatum L., Parthenium integrifolium L., Sanguinaria canadensis L. and Tephrosia virginiana (L.) Pers. Percent cover values for the following species were positively related to time since beginning of experiment: A. racmosa, A. serpentaria, A. cannabinum, D. quaternata and T. virginiana, and frequency of A. cannabinum and D. quaternata was positively related to time since beginning of experiment. Representatives of these species significantly increased in percent cover over time and in the latter subset, had higher frequency over the course of prescribed fire management. Small canopy gaps may be beneficial to non-timber forest product species in oak hickory forests. Knowledge of how these species perform on particular ecological site descriptions can influence forest farming site selections. Additionally, decisions about which overstory management activities will be conducted, whether these be timber stand improvement activities involving canopy-gap creation, uneven-aged management timber harvest types, and prescribed fire, can be used to determine whether forest farming operations can be synergistic with the existing silvicultural management plan.
