Book Eyeblink Classical Conditioning Volume 1

Download or read book Eyeblink Classical Conditioning Volume 1 written by Diana S. Woodruff-Pak and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2000-02-29 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The model system of eyeblink classical conditioning in humans has enormous potential for the understanding and application of fundamental principles of learning. This collection makes classical conditioning accessible to teachers and researchers in a number of ways. The first aim is to present the latest developments in theory building. Second, as background for the current directions, Eyeblink Classical Conditioning, Volume I presents an overview of a large body of previously published research on eyeblink classical conditioning. Last, the authors describe eyeblink classical conditioning techniques. Each chapter includes a highlighted methods section so that interested readers can replicate techniques for teaching and research.

Book Theoretical Foundations of Behavior Therapy

Download or read book Theoretical Foundations of Behavior Therapy written by Hans J. Eysenck and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-11-11 with total page 472 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In this book we have attempted to confront a number of issues that are intimately related to the theoretical basis of behavior therapy. We believe that behavior therapy is an extremely efficient procedure for the treatment of neurotic disorders; that it is based on certain principles derived from learning theory; and that it is unique in using basic scientific principles in psychology in the service of applied and practical ends. We believe that we are here dealing with much more than the advantageous use of serendipitous borrowings from nonexistent principles, the cookbook collection of precepts, methods, and working rules that happen to have lasting effects. We also believe that there is truly a general principle unde. rlying behavior therapy, rather than a varied mass of nonintegrated therapies that have little in common other than a name. These beliefs are often contes ted, but usually those who oppose them do so on the basis of misconceptions and misunderstandings that indicate a lack of knowledge of fundamental facts. It is the purpose of this book to remove these misconceptions and misunderstandings, and to bring up to date our knowledge in certain fundamental areas of learning theory, behavior therapy, and the biological foundations of per sonality and individual differences. There are three major groups of misconceptions and misunderstandings. The first of these relates to beliefs held by many psychiatrists and cognitive psychologists relating to behavior therapy.

Book Progress in Psychobiology and Physiological Psychology

Download or read book Progress in Psychobiology and Physiological Psychology written by James M. Sprague and published by Academic Press. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 312 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Progress in Psychobiology and Physiological Psychology, Volume 10 reviews progress in the fields of psychobiology and physiological psychology, with emphasis on the anatomy and function of the brain in terms of behavior expressed by the organism. Topics covered include neuronal plasticity maintained by the central norepinephrine system in the visual cortex of the cat; pain sensation in primates; and classical conditioning in the rabbit. Comprised of four chapters, this volume begins with a discussion on the elegant body of research relating the norepinephrine system of the brain and plasticity in the developing visual cortex. The next chapter offers a critical and insightful account of pain sensations and responses in monkeys and humans, the effect of morphine on them, and the neural pathways in the spinal cord mediating them. The third chapter investigates the neural basis of the nictitating membrane response (NMR) electrophysiologically, recording from a number of brain sites. It shows that the memory trace for this conditioned response is localized in the cerebellum. The final chapter is devoted to the principles and methods of classical conditioning, centered on the NMR in the rabbit. Conditioning is analyzed within a broad experimental and theoretical context. This book should be of interest to biologists, psychologists, and physiologists.

Book Cognition and the Symbolic Processes

Download or read book Cognition and the Symbolic Processes written by Walter B. Weimer and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2024-06-03 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1974 and taking the revolution in psycholinguistics and cognitive psychology as a point of departure, this book summarizes the lessons learned from past attempts to construct a psychology of the higher mental processes. Even more importantly, it crystallizes specific directives and research proposals that show where cognitive psychology ought to go in the future. The relationship of learning theory, linguistics, and perception to the broad field of cognition and the nature of mind and knowledge are examined in detail. Today it can be read in its historical context.

Book Brain Stimulation and Behavioral Change

Download or read book Brain Stimulation and Behavioral Change written by Claudio Lucchiari and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2019-05-15 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The eBook entitled “Brain Stimulation and Behavioral Change” is a collection of articles about the use of transcranial electric stimulation (tES) to change behaviors and face pathological conditions, to enhance cognition and to explore cerebral functions using safe and non-invasive brain modulation techniques. The tESs include transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), transcranial alternate current stimulation (tACS), and, due to the way it induces changes in the brain, Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS). The use of tES has recently exploded. Certainly, one reason for this explosion of research is that it is a cheap way to change behavior. However, on the other hand, we still know very little about the neural mechanisms that underlie tES. The present eBook includes both original studies and reviews. It covers a wide scope of arguments, including studies aimed at testing the potential ability of tES in mitigating physical and psychiatric symptoms, and to support neurological rehabilitation, enhancing reading abilities, motor abilities, and creativity. Furthermore, some contributions about the role of tES in discovering and mapping the neuro-functional correlates of higher cognitive functions are also included. The common background of the contributions included in the eBook lies in the idea that we need sound scientific evidence about how to move these techniques from labs to real-life contexts. Addressing these issues and understanding the real potentialities of tES in clinical and non-clinical applications require a significant cross-fertilization between disciplines. We hope this eBook will be able to boost the discussion on this vital topic.
