Book excerpt: More than 1 million teenage girls in the United States become pregnant each year; nearly half give birth. Why do these young people, who are hardly more than children themselves, become parents? This volume reviews in detail the trends in and consequences of teenage sexual behavior and offers thoughtful insights on the issues of sexual initiation, contraception, pregnancy, abortion, adoption, and the well-being of adolescent families. It provides a systematic assessment of the impact of various programmatic approaches, both preventive and ameliorative, in light of the growing scientific understanding of the topic.

Book Positive and Negative Outcomes of Sexual Behaviors

Download or read book Positive and Negative Outcomes of Sexual Behaviors written by Eva S. Lefkowitz and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2014-06-24 with total page 132 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Developing healthy sexual behaviors is critical to adolescents’ wellbeing. While more emphasis has been on negative outcomes, there are broad positive implications for physical health, mental health, intimate relationships, and identity development. To fully understand the impact, we need to understand both. In addition, the impact of sexual behavior is not universal, but may differ based on individuals’ demographic, relational, contextual, and attitudinal factors. This volume provides a framework for understanding the complex role of sexual behavior in adolescents’ lives, with a specific focus on the roles of sexual minority status, internet-based sexual experiences, relationship context, and sexual learning through formal and informal sex education in determining the outcomes of sexual behavior. It provides: A nuanced, multidimensional understanding of the role of sexual behavior in shaping adolescents’ development and well-being Important directions for future research Recommendations for sexuality education, prevention, and intervention programs. This is the 144th volume in this Jossey-Bass series New Directions for Child and Adolescent Development. Its mission is to provide scientific and scholarly presentations on cutting edge issues and concepts in this subject area. Each volume focuses on a specific new direction or research topic and is edited by experts from that field.

Book Risks and Problem Behaviors in Adolescence

Download or read book Risks and Problem Behaviors in Adolescence written by Richard M. Lerner and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-02-04 with total page 370 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The articles in this volume illustrate how development is propelled by the bidirectional relations that occur between the person and all levels of the context. The authors argue that adolescent life is embedded in a complicated developmental system involving multiple features of the individual (e.g., biology, emotions, personality, and cognition) and the multiple levels of his or her social ecology (e.g., peers, family, school, the workplace, and the public policy and legal systems that structure and impact behavioural opportunities for and the actions of adolescents). These articles have important implications for the design of interventions aimed at adolescent problem behaviours.

Book Adolescent Sexual Behavior in the Digital Age

Download or read book Adolescent Sexual Behavior in the Digital Age written by Fabian Saleh and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2014-04-28 with total page 401 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nexus between the digital revolution and adolescent sexual behavior has posed significant challenges to mental health practitioners, attorneys, and educators. These digital technologies may facilitate dangerous behaviors and serious consequences for some youth. Adolescent Sexual Development in the Digital Age considers adolescent sexual behavior in both clinical and legal contexts and provides a basis for clinicians, legal professionals, educators, policy makers, parents and the general public to understand the impact that technology has on human growth and development. The book's contributing authors are leading authorities in adolescent development, law, and ethics, fostering an interdisciplinary dialogue within the text. New technology poses many opportunities for both normal and risky sexual behavior in youth; including "sexting," social networking, cyber-sexual harassment, commercial exploitation of children, and child pornography. Beyond just cataloging the various technologies impacting sexual behavior, this volume offers guidance and strategies for addressing the issues created by the digital age.

Book Adolescents Perceptions of Peer and Parent Responses to Adolescent Sexuality

Download or read book Adolescents Perceptions of Peer and Parent Responses to Adolescent Sexuality written by Sadi Jane Fox and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Abstract: Adolescents' sexuality is not well understood in society today. Little research has explored the relationship between adolescents' sexual behavior and their perception of their parents' and peers' attitudes toward sexuality. Therefore, exploring the association between adolescents' sexual behavior and the influences parent and peer attitudes have on adolescents' sexual behavior is important. Further understanding adolescents' sexual behavior decisions and perceptions as related to sexuality can give society a larger understanding of this sensitive issue. Research oriented to this age group can therefore affect sexual education policies in schools and impact general societal knowledge and understanding. The current study examined adolescents' sexual behavior and their perceptions of their parents' and peers' approval or disapproval of their involvement in sexual intercourse. Participants included 50 Ohio State psychology students between the ages of 17 and 19. This study looked at the relationship and differences between virgin and non-virgin perceptions of punishment and disappointment relating to sexual intercourse involvement. Hypothetical and actual perceptions that adolescents' hold about their sexual behaviors was further studied and compared between virgin and non-virgin adolescents. Whether the adolescents had a talk with their parent(s) about contraception methods was also compared between participants. The results confirmed the hypothesis that both parents and peers affect adolescents' sexual behaviors. Additionally, it was discovered that adolescents' perceptions of their friends' sexual behaviors influence individual behavior. Moreover, expected punishment and disappointment from parents influenced adolescent sexual behavior; if an adolescent expects that their parents will be disappointed, the adolescent is less likely to engage in sexual behavior. Further hypotheses were confirmed. If adolescents perceive their closest friends to be sexually active, the adolescent is more likely to be sexually active as well. Additionally, if the adolescent has spoken with their parents about sexual contraception, the adolescent perceives their parent to be less disappointed in sexual behaviors.

Book Sexuality in Emerging Adulthood

Download or read book Sexuality in Emerging Adulthood written by Elizabeth M. Morgan and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2021 with total page 585 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Scientific theory is essential to research on sexuality and sexual experiences in emerging adulthood. Theory serves a number of important functions for research, including prediction and explanation. Research has often utilized theory to help enhance what we know about sexuality among those in the developmental period of emerging adulthood. In this chapter we offer a primer on theories that have been used regularly when studying sex and relationships using emerging adult samples, including Life Course Development Theory, Symbolic Interactionism, Social Exchange Theory, and The Theory of Sexual Possible Selves. At the conclusion of our discussion of these theories and their role in guiding research and explaining findings on sex and sexuality, we offer theoretical directions to enhance the rigor of the use of theory in future research on sexual experiences among emerging adults"--

Book Romantic Relationships and Sexuality in Adolescence and Young Adulthood

Download or read book Romantic Relationships and Sexuality in Adolescence and Young Adulthood written by Daphne van de Bongardt and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-04-19 with total page 199 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Romantic relationship formation and the engagement in sexual behaviors are normative and salient developmental tasks for adolescents and young adults. These developmental tasks are increasingly viewed from an ecological perspective, thus as strongly embedded in different social contexts, including the proximal social domains of parents, peers, and partners. This volume brings together seven recent empirical studies on adolescents’ and young adults’ romantic relationships and sexuality in the context of relationships with parents, peers, and partners. In this editorial introduction, we describe two important recent changes in the theoretical perspectives on emerging romantic relationships and sexual activity: from risky behaviors to normative tasks, and from individual to contextualized processes. We then discuss recent advances in empirical research on romantic relationships and sexuality of adolescents and young adults. After that, we review the seven studies in this volume, and discuss the contributions of these studies to the existing literature. Finally, we discuss directions for future research regarding how to further incorporate the interrelational perspective in empirical research on these topics, and how to bridge the gap between the research fields on romantic relationships and sexuality. This book was originally published as a special issue of the European Journal of Developmental Psychology.

Book Understanding Peer Influence in Children and Adolescents

Download or read book Understanding Peer Influence in Children and Adolescents written by Mitchell J. Prinstein and published by Guilford Press. This book was released on 2008-05-13 with total page 271 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scientists, educators, and parents of teens have long recognized the potency of peer influences on children and youth, but until recently, questions of how and why adolescents emulate their peers were largely overlooked. This book presents a comprehensive framework for understanding the processes by which peers shape each other's attitudes and behavior, and explores implications for intervention and prevention. Leading authorities share compelling findings on such topics as how drug use, risky sexual behavior, and other deviant behaviors "catch on" among certain peer groups or cliques; the social, cognitive, developmental, and contextual factors that strengthen or weaken the power of peer influence; and the nature of positive peer influences and how to support them.

Book The Impact of Parental Involvement and Education on Adolescent High Risk Sexual Behavior

Download or read book The Impact of Parental Involvement and Education on Adolescent High Risk Sexual Behavior written by Karla D. Morrow and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High-risk sexual behaviors in the adolescent population greatly increase their risk of obtaining a sexually transmitted disease (STD) and/or human immunodeficiency virus (HIV). The Centers for Disease Control (2002) estimate that there are currently 20 million people in the world with HIV and 15 million people become infected with a STD every year. HIV is considered to be the seventh leading cause of death for children between 5 and 14 years of age and the sixth leading cause between 15 and 24 years of age (Rogers, 2000). A pretest-posttest research utilization project was completed to determine whether and educational experience would be effective in changing high-risk behaviors in the adolescent population. Fifty-three students from a high school health class and five parents participated in the intervention focusing on increased knowledge and improved communication skills between parents and adolescents regarding sexual decisions and prevention of STD's and HIV. The program was successful based upon a change in the decision to remain abstinent until marriage from 59% to 83% on the posttest. Communication was another area that demonstrated successful intervention; the parent as the main source of information about sex increased from 48% to 62%. Ninety-eight percent of the students recommended the program for future students. Success of the parent class was determined from qualitative remarks obtained, the change in preference from an abstinence only message for their adolescent to an abstinence and condom use message, and the participants feeling more prepared to talk to their adolescent about sex, STDs and HIV.

Book Sexuality in Adolescence

Download or read book Sexuality in Adolescence written by Meredith Temple-Smith and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-08-11 with total page 373 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Sexuality in Adolescence: The Digital Generation provides a comprehensive and up-to-date overview of research and theory about adolescent sexuality in today’s world. The book examines biological, social and health-related approaches and reviews qualitative and quantitative research from psychology, sociology, epidemiology and medicine, emphasising the interplay between perspectives and privileging the voices of young people as they discuss the joys and pains of sexual awakening. The focus is on understanding healthy sexual development and its many variations, but problems and issues arising as young people make their journey to adult sexuality are also considered. The book presents global research on many key issues of our time, including the impact of media and technology on adolescent sexuality, changes in adolescent sexual behaviors and beliefs, sexual risk taking, sex education, and teen pregnancy and abortion. This fully revised and updated third edition of Sexuality in Adolescence also addresses the crucial issues of sexual diversity, sexual safety and sexual communication, including coercion, peer pressure and double standards. In Sexuality in Adolescence: The Digital Generation, the authors aim to promote sexual wellbeing, and argue for the importance of the adolescent period as a time for engendering healthy sexual attitudes and practices. This book will be valuable reading for students in the social, behavioural and health sciences who are interested in adolescent development and the topic of sexuality, as well as for professionals working with young people and families.
