Book excerpt: Bachelor Thesis from the year 2021 in the subject Agrarian Studies, , course: Science in Agriculture and Biotechnology, language: English, abstract: Hypothesis: Cow dung manure has no effects on coriander development and final yield. Coriander (Coriandrum sativum) is one of the most important spice and medicinal plants belonging to the family Apiaceae. It is also known as cilantro (American: cilantro). It can be grown on a variety of soil and prefers light, well drained, moist, loamy soil and can also grow on heavy black soil. It provides significant amount of Dietary fiber, Calcium, Selenium, Iron, Magnesium and Manganese per 100 gm. Generally, organic matter is added to soil to increase its fertility and to improve the physical structure for increased agricultural production. Previously, many investigators have reported beneficial uses of organic matter due to the presence of plant growth nutrients. Cattle manure is a source of nitrogen which is a vital nutrient for the activity of coriander growth. It is a fraction of many components such as amino acids, nucleic acids and chlorophyll. The use of cattle manure has been reported as a potential factor for vegetative growth. The experiment was conducted in Western Kenya, Bungoma County in Kibabii university farm.

Book Teff in Southern Ethiopia Effect of Seed Rates and Sowing Methods on Phenology Growth Yield and Yield Attributes at Wolaita Sodo

Download or read book Teff in Southern Ethiopia Effect of Seed Rates and Sowing Methods on Phenology Growth Yield and Yield Attributes at Wolaita Sodo written by Wolde Tasew and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2021-06-15 with total page 25 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scientific Essay from the year 2021 in the subject Agrarian Studies, grade: 1, , course: Agriculture, language: English, abstract: Teff is a major staple cereal crop in Ethiopia. The need for its production as a staple food is increasing from year to year; however, its productivity is limited, amongst others, by the use of improper sowing methods and inappropriate seed rates. These effects were examined in this present study. Row planting and optimizing seed rate should be in place to increase the productivity of the crop. A field experiment was conducted at Wolaita Sodo Agricultural College Farm, during the 2018/19 main cropping season under rain-fed condition, with the objective of evaluating the response of teff to seeding rates and sowing methods on phenology, growth, yield components and yield of teff. Factorial combinations of two sowing methods (Row and broadcast) and five seeding rates were laid out in a randomized complete block design with three replications. Data related to phenology, growth, yield and yield attributes, were collected and analyzed using Gestate software. Plant parameters such as days to panicle emergence, lodging %, number of total and effect tillers per plant and grain yield were significantly affected by the interaction effect of sowing methods and seed rates. Plots sown with low seeding rate combined with row planting gave high grain yield. Therefore, using treatment combinations of seeding rate of 2.5 kg ha−1 together with the row planting can be advised for teff production in the study area. However, repeated experiment over different soil type, seasons and locations necessitates for conclusive recommendation.

Download or read book The Potato Crop written by Hugo Campos and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-12-03 with total page 524 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is open access under a CC BY 4.0 license. This book provides a fresh, updated and science-based perspective on the current status and prospects of the diverse array of topics related to the potato, and was written by distinguished scientists with hands-on global experience in research aspects related to potato. The potato is the third most important global food crop in terms of consumption. Being the only vegetatively propagated species among the world’s main five staple crops creates both issues and opportunities for the potato: on the one hand, this constrains the speed of its geographic expansion and its options for international commercialization and distribution when compared with commodity crops such as maize, wheat or rice. On the other, it provides an effective insulation against speculation and unforeseen spikes in commodity prices, since the potato does not represent a good traded on global markets. These two factors highlight the underappreciated and underrated role of the potato as a dependable nutrition security crop, one that can mitigate turmoil in world food supply and demand and political instability in some developing countries. Increasingly, the global role of the potato has expanded from a profitable crop in developing countries to a crop providing income and nutrition security in developing ones. This book will appeal to academics and students of crop sciences, but also policy makers and other stakeholders involved in the potato and its contribution to humankind’s food security.

Book Accounting for Water Use and Productivity

Download or read book Accounting for Water Use and Productivity written by David Molden and published by IWMI. This book was released on 1997 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper presents a conceptual framework for water accounting and provides generic terminologies and procedures to describe the status of water resource use and consequences of water resources related actions. The framework applies to water resource use at three levels of analysis: a use level such as an irrigated field or household, a service level such as an irrigation or water supply system, and a water basin level that may include several uses. Water accounting terminology and performance indicators are developed and presented with examples at all the three levels. Concepts and terminologies presented are developed to be supportive in a number of activities including: identification of opportunities for water savings and increasing water productivity; developing a better understanding of present patterns of water use and impacts of interventions; improving communication among professionals and communication to non-water professionals; and improving the rationale for allocation of water among uses. It is expected that with further application, these water accounting concepts will evolve into a robust, supporting methodology for water basin analysis.
