Book The Acquisition of Chinese as a First and Second Language

Download or read book The Acquisition of Chinese as a First and Second Language written by Xiaohong Wen and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2020-11-25 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, through highly selective and rigorous review processes, has collected eight empirical studies showcasing research advances in multiple domains including child first language, adult additional language, and heritage language acquisition. The studies are theoretically motivated and have adopted a spectrum of innovative methodological strategies to achieve a broader understanding of the nature of learning and the learning process. The volume encompasses a wide range of contents: 1) The L1 and L2 acquisition of syntax, semantics, phonetics, and the syntax-discourse interface; 2) Data comparisons across different learner groups: L1 Chinese children, L2 Chinese learners, and Chinese heritage speakers; 3) Acquisition of language skills: speaking, listening, and writing; and last but not least, 4) Instructional interventions including consciousness-raising and metacognitive strategy training. The volume is intended to bridge the gap between research and instruction by helping teachers understand their students and their learning. Informed by research, teachers can opt for appropriate pedagogical approaches and instructional conditions for their students. The volume is guest-edited by Xiaohong Wen, Professor in Applied Linguistics and Chinese language Acquisition at the University of Houston.

Book Teaching and Learning Vocabulary

Download or read book Teaching and Learning Vocabulary written by Elfrieda H. Hiebert and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2005-05-06 with total page 331 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although proficiency in vocabulary has long been recognized as basic to reading proficiency, there has been a paucity of research on vocabulary teaching and learning over the last two decades. Recognizing this, the U.S. Department of Education recently sponsored a Focus on Vocabulary conference that attracted the best-known and most active researchers in the vocabulary field. This book is the outgrowth of that conference. It presents scientific evidence from leading research programs that address persistent issues regarding the role of vocabulary in text comprehension. Part I examines how vocabulary is learned; Part II presents instructional interventions that enhance vocabulary; and Part III looks at which words to choose for vocabulary instruction. Other key features of this timely new book include: *Broad Coverage. The book addresses the full range of students populating current classrooms--young children, English Language Learners, and young adolescents. *Issues Focus. By focusing on persistent issues from the perspective of critical school populations, this volume provides a rich, scientific foundation for effective vocabulary instruction and policy. *Author Expertise. Few volumes can boast of a more luminous cast of contributing authors (see table of contents). This book is suitable for anyone (graduate students, in-service reading specialists and curriculum directors, college faculty, and researchers) who deals with vocabulary learning and instruction as a vital component of reading proficiency.

Book Metacognition and Reading Comprehension

Download or read book Metacognition and Reading Comprehension written by Ruth Garner and published by Praeger. This book was released on 1987 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Developmental psychologists have been interested in metacognitive phenomena since the early 1970s, while reading researchers have been interested in awareness, monitoring, and strategy use for text-processing as part of a shift in focus from text factors to reader factors in reading. A great many research studies have been conducted by psychologists and reading researchers under the rubric of metacognition. Unlike other chapters fom some edited books which present only syntheses of this burgeoning research literature, this volume not only presents the literature but provides analysis about its usefulness for researchers and practitioners. It also presents a discussion of important methodological dilemmas within these research literatures.

Book Instructional Models in Reading

Download or read book Instructional Models in Reading written by Steven A. Stahl and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-04-03 with total page 433 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book started with a simple idea -- examine models of reading instruction that have emerged during the past 20 years. These models span a wide range of instruction representing a continuum from highly structured, task analytic instruction to child-centered and holistic instruction. Each model has its own epistemology or views on how "reading" and "instruction" are to be defined. The different epistemologies indicate different principles of instruction which, in turn, indicate different practices in the classroom. Each model is also supported by a different research base. In this volume, leading proponents of these different models discuss their ideas about reading instruction thereby encouraging readers to make their own comparisons and contrasts. The chapter authors seem to adopt the editors' eclectic approach--to some greater or lesser extent--incorporating aspects of other models into their instruction as they see other goals. Thus, models of reading instruction are complex. Complicating matters further is the fact that teachers hold their own models of reading, which may or may not be congruent with those discussed here. Although academically developed models influence college preservice and in-service instruction, teachers' own models of reading filter the information that they take from what they learn from these perspectives. By carefully examining these variables, this book makes a firm contribution toward disciplined inquiry into what it means to teach reading.
