Book excerpt: Intellectual capital is among the new, advanced management notions developed to overcome the inadequacy of previous administrations, to adapt to new situations and forge ahead of the competition. Intellectual capital means the information, experience and skills that offer advantage in competition and reveal the values existing within the structure of an enterprise. These values also exist in the relationship between the enterprise and the environment and with the employees. Although some research studies on intellectual capital (IC) have been conducted, to date no research has been carried out on the effects of IC on qualitative and quantitative organizational performance. For this reason, IC and its effects on firm performance (both qualitative and quantitative) were evaluated in this study. Following the evaluation of the intellectual capital and its sub-elements, the differentiation of the sub-elements is made. Then the reliability and validity of these sub-factors are calculated. The intellectual capital model has been tested by the structural equality model (SEM). According to research results, IC explains 92 percent of a firm's performance. The effect of IC on qualitative performance is 0.84, while on quantitative performance it is 0.72. RC impresses qualitative performance with coefficient 0.94, quantitative performance with coefficient 0.60; HC impresses qualitative performance with coefficient 0.92, quantitative performance with coefficient 0.54 less; SC impresses qualitative performance with coefficient 0.90, quantitative performance with coefficient 0.53. According to the results of the research, IC affects both the qualitative and the quantitative performance of firms by supplying extensive knowledge to the managers.

Book excerpt: In this thematic issue of the Journal of Entrepreneurship, Management and Innovation, entitled Qualitative Research in Economics and Management Sciences, the authors used many quantitative methods and research models, e.g. SEM, PLS-SEM, or probit models (Table 1). Each of these approaches is characterized by methodological rigor and an assessment of the reliability and validity of the research instruments used. Pini and Tchorek (2022) analyze the determinants of exports in two European, culturally related countries, such as Italy and Poland, using an econometric and probit model, which implies a normal distribution of errors and is adapted to binary responses (excluding size and age variables). The authors investigate the influence of many independent variables (size, age, management by family members or external managers) on the dependent variable (export), controlling the research model by product and process innovation, location in a less developed region, operations in a high/medium-high technology-intensive sector or cooperation with many banks. The results confirm the authors' initial assumptions that the size of companies influences the exports of the surveyed countries; the age of companies exporting their goods is more important in Italy than in Poland, where no such impact has been recorded. In addition, management by an external manager increases the likelihood of exports for younger family businesses in Italy and smaller family businesses in Poland. The authors also showed that product innovation is the engine of exports in Italy and Poland, and geographic location affects the likelihood of exports in Italy, but not in Poland. In other studies, Paulino (2022) presents the growing business analytics and business intelligence in the Philippines, their impact on organizational performance, and marketing, financial, and business process performance indicators. Retail companies were selected for the study, focusing on advanced data management used in business operations. The author mainly used the well-known PLS-SEM model, and his research instrument was assessed in terms of content validity, construct validity, and reliability. The results of the measurement and structural model evaluation were also subject to verification. The results indicate the impact of business analytics capabilities (including the ability of the decision support system (DSS), business process improvement (BPM), data dashboard (DD), and financial analysis (FA) on the business intelligence level. In addition, it has been empirically verified that organizational performance influences marketing, financial, and business process performance. Overall, business intelligence is an essential predictor of a retail company's organizational performance. The assumption that the level of readiness to implement business analytics can be treated as a moderating factor between business analytics and organizational performance has not been confirmed. The next article by Klimontowicz and Majewska (2022) presents the positive impact of intellectual capital (IC), especially its three components, such as process capital, human capital and relational capital, on the competitiveness of banks and market efficiency. The authors used the following methods and tools: Principal Axis Factor Analysis, PLS-SEM, PAPI, and CAWI. As a result of their application, they emphasize that, in contrast to previous research, the process capital dominates the bank's potential to create a competitive advantage, not human capital, proving the vital role of technology and innovation. They found that competitive performance moderates the relationship between IC and market efficiency; the environment positively moderates the relationship between IC and competitor performance as well as the relationship between competitor performance and market efficiency. The size of the bank and the length of its market activity affect the market efficiency measured by the average rate of changes in ROA and ROE. The study expands the existing evidence, mainly from well-developed countries, on the intellectual capital of Polish banks, emphasizing the process capital to a much greater extent as a modern and so far little exposed component of IC in other research. The last two articles refer to human resource management. Hassan's study (2022) explores the impact of human resource management (HRM) practices on employee retention. In addition, he moderates the role of performance evaluation, training and development in the relationship between HRM practices and employee retention. Using SEM and questionnaires validated by other researchers, the author proves the originality of research in the retail sector in the Maldives on improving employee retention, a complementary approach to the impact of rewards and compensations, training and employee development, as well as assessing their results in human capital management, recommending practical solutions for the sector retail Maldives. In another study on workers’ adaptive performance, Tan and Antonio (2022) using PLS-SEM prove that the new form of remote work and the so-called e-leadership forced by the COVID-19 pandemic have changed the way employers and employees interact. Organizational commitment, teleworking and a sense of purpose affect the adaptive performance of employees directly, while the perception of e-leadership indirectly. It is also one of the first studies to capture intrinsic motivation as the antecedent of employee adaptive performance, along with perceived e-leadership and teleworking results.

Previous studies hint at a possible mediation - by organisational innovation - of the relationship between intellectual capital and a firm's performance. Despite considerable research on its single elements, little is currently known about the effects of IC as a whole on SMEs, especially in Australia. This research investigated the contribution of IC to competitive advantage, based on the resource-based view (RBV) and the dynamic capability view (DCV). These are the acknowledged platforms for investigating competitiveness. This study also explored the strategic links between IC, and organisational innovation, and SME performance in Australia. Mixed methods of data collection were employed, the better to assess the relevance of the proposed integrated model. Quantitative and qualitative research methods differ in terms of their analytical objectives and types of data, and by using a mixture of methods this research obtains a more complete overview of the issues being addressed.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this research is to determine the impact of intellectual capital on the financial performance of power and energy companies in Sri Lanka adopting key dimensions; human capital efficiency, structural capital efficiency, relational capital efficiency, and capital employed efficiency. Additionally, this study investigates any other sector-specific factors that influence the performance of the power and energy sector in Sri Lanka. To achieve the study's goal, a quantitative approach and general qualitative analysis were used. The value-Added Intellectual Coefficient method was used for quantitative analysis and secondary data were gathered from a published database of annual reports from the power and energy sectors spanning the years 2011 to 2020. All firms in the power and energy sector listed on the Colombo Stock Exchange, as well as all government sector organizations in the selected sector, Ceylon Electricity Board, LECO, and Petroleum Corporation, are considered. Furthermore, an interview approach was used to explore the factors influencing the overall performance of the power and energy sectors in Sri Lanka, and the data were analyzed using qualitative data analysis techniques. Quantitative analysis revealed that capital employed efficiency has a positive effect on and is significant for all dependent variables, such as return on assets, return on equity, and asset turnover. Furthermore, human capital efficiency is positively affected for all dependent variables and is a significant predictor of asset turnover and return on assets. Further analysis reveals that structural capital efficiency has a positive effect on return on assets and return on equity, but it is insignificant for all returns on assets, return on equity, and asset turnover. Further qualitative investigation reveals that human capital efficiency, structural capital efficiency, relational capital efficiency, and capital employed efficiency are all critical to improve the organization's financial and overall performance. As sector and context-specific factors, it was discovered that political influence, weather conditions, government decisions, and pricing formulas that have not been developed to allow for cost-reflective pricing even though it has a direct impact on a firm's financial and overall performance. The paper represents to fill the gap in the literature relating to the relationship between intellectual capital and a firm's financial performance in power and energy sector companies in Sri Lanka. Findings help to provide solid recommendations for the importance of intellectual capital in the growth of this sector. Further, the paper attempts to identify other factors which affect the finance and overall performance of power and energy sector companies in Sri Lanka which can be considered for due attention in strategic decision making.

The research questions posed in this thesis take on the challenge to find empirical evidence that investment in Human Capital, through Human Resources, has a positive impact on intermediate as well as accounting and share-value indicators of organisational performance. This literature review summarises, integrates and evaluates research published between 1998 and 2003 pertaining to the direct and indirect relationship between Human Resources on different indicators of intermediate and bottom-line performance. The review is comprised of 31 articles clustered into the following topics: strategic HRM, Human Resources Development, technology, diverse workforces and flexible working conditions and methodological issues in HR-organisational performance research. Evidence for the direct and indirect impact of HR on organisational performance is discussed and the findings are interpreted with reference to Ostroff and Bowen s Multi-Level Model (2000), which explains the individual, organisational and inter-level relationships between Human Resources and organisational performance. Enabling conditions that strengthen the HR-organisational performance relationship are identified. Methodological issues such as levels of analyses, short-term vs. long-term perspectives and generalisability are evaluated in detail. Employee benefits from enhanced organisational performance and barriers to the diffusion of high-performance work practices are research questions that still remain unanswered (Ichniowski et al., 2000). Future research should focus on building up a portfolio of studies at different levels of analyses and include a broader range of organisational performance variables that are also relevant employees as well as shareholders and top management. The implications of the research findings for HR directors and corporate strategy functions are presented.
