It presents modern mathematical modeling approaches to the qualitative and numerical analysis of solutions for complex engineering problems in physics, mechanics, biochemistry, geophysics, biology and climatology. Contributions by an international team of respected authors bridge the gap between abstract mathematical approaches, such as applied methods of modern analysis, algebra, fundamental and computational mechanics, nonautonomous and stochastic dynamical systems on the one hand, and practical applications in nonlinear mechanics, optimization, decision making theory and control theory on the other. As such, the book will be of interest to mathematicians and engineers working at the interface of these fields.

Book Effects of High Temperature Argon Heat Treatment on Tensile Strength and Microstructure of BN SiC Coated SiC Fiber Preforms

Download or read book Effects of High Temperature Argon Heat Treatment on Tensile Strength and Microstructure of BN SiC Coated SiC Fiber Preforms written by and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Preforms of BN/SiC coated Hi-Nicalon and Sylramic SiC fibers were heat treated under 0.1 MPa argon pressure between 1000 deg to 1800 deg C for 1 and 100h. The effects of high temperature exposure on physical dimensions, weight, room temperature tensile strength, and microstructure of preforms have been studied. Both preforms showed shrinkage and weight loss, and microstructural changes beyond 1000 deg C. After 100 hr exposure, the Hi-Nicalon preforms showed strength degradation beyond 1200 deg C. The mechanisms of the strength degradation appear to be grain growth of the SiC fibers and crystallization of the BN coating. After 100 hr, the Sylramic preforms heat treated to 1000 deg C retained their as-produced strength while some of those heat-treated between 1000 deg and 1800 deg C showed strength degradation and others did not. At 1800 deg C, the ultimate tensile strength decreased with increasing time of exposure. Reasons for strength degradation of Sylramic preforms are being investigated.

Book Heat Treatment Effects on Microstructure of SiC Fiber Preforms

Download or read book Heat Treatment Effects on Microstructure of SiC Fiber Preforms written by and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 18 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Preforms of BN/SiC coated Sylramic SiC fibers were heat treated at 1420 deg, 1600 deg, and 1800 deg C in 0.1 MPa argon or at 1800 deg C in 103 MPa nitrogen for 1 h. Optical, SEM, and TEM techniques were used to analyze the effects of environmental exposure on constituent microstructure of the preforms. TEM analysis of the as-received preforms indicates that the CVI BN coating is predominantly amorphous with small amounts of microcrystalline BN grains, and that the SiC coating on top of the BN coating and SiC fibers is polycrystalline. With increasing temperature of exposure from 1420 deg to 1800 deg C, the preforms heat treated in argon showed increasing amounts of crystalline BN in the CVI BN coating, and coarsening of SiC grains in the CVI SiC coating and SiC fibers. On the other hand, the preforms heal treated in 103 MPa nitrogen at 1800 deg C for 1 h showed microstructural changes inside the fiber tows similar to those heat treated at 1800 deg C in 0.1 MPa argon for 1 h, but the same preforms on the outer periphery of the tows showed reaction between nitrogen and the CVI SiC coating to form Si3N4.

Book An Investigation of the Effects of Processing on the Fracture Properties of a Sicp 6XXX Al Composite

Download or read book An Investigation of the Effects of Processing on the Fracture Properties of a Sicp 6XXX Al Composite written by Frank N. Quiles and published by . This book was released on 1996-06-01 with total page 95 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Discontinuous reinforced aluminum (DRA) composites are attractive as structural materials because of their desirable stiffness and strength to weight ratios and relative ease of manufacture. However, they typically display low tensile ductility and fracture toughness. In this work, the impact of post- fabrication deformation processing and heat treatment on the fracture properties of a 17.5 vol. % SiCsubp reinforced Al 6092 matrix composite is investigated. Process temperature, total strain and strain rate during extrusion were varied in order to explore the feasibility of obtaining Particle Stimulated Nucleation (PSN) of recrystallization during processing, with the goal of refining the matrix grain size. Additionally, various combinations of solution and aging treatments were investigated with the aim of obtaining a number of stable matrix microstructural conditions with varying levels of composite strength and fracture toughness. A preliminary investigation of fracture mechanisms and their dependence on the matrix aging state has also been carried out using optical and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) and differential scanning calorimetry (DSC), and is reported here.

Book The Influence of Microstructure on the Tensile Behavior of an Aluminum Metal Matrix Composite

Download or read book The Influence of Microstructure on the Tensile Behavior of an Aluminum Metal Matrix Composite written by National Aeronautics and Space Adm Nasa and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2018-10-06 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The relationship between tensile properties and microstructure of a powder metallurgy aluminum alloy, 2009 was examined. The alloy was investigated both unreinforced and reinforced with 15 v/o SiC whiskers or 15 v/o SiC particulate to form a discontinuous metal matrix composite (MMC). The materials were investigated in the as-fabricated condition and in three different hot-rolled sheet thicknesses of 6.35, 3.18, and 1.8 mm. Image analysis was used to characterize the morphology of the reinforcements and their distributions within the matrix alloy. Fractographic examinations revealed that failure was associated with the presence of microstructural inhomogeneities which were related to both the matrix alloy and to the reinforcement. The results from these observations together with the matrix tensile data were used to predict the strengths and moduli of the MMC's using relatively simple models. The whisker MMC could be modeled as a short fiber composite and an attempt was made to model the particulate MMC as a dispersion/dislocation hardened alloy. Birt, Michael J. and Johnson, W. Book Carburizing

Download or read book Carburizing written by Geoffrey Parrish and published by ASM International. This book was released on 1999-01-01 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annotation Based on his training in metallurgy and experience in a large British gear manufacturing company, Parrish reviews the microstructural features of metal products that have been carbon case-hardened, and the influence of those features on the more important material properties. He is not concerned with the carbonizing process at all. He primarily addresses students of engineering and ferrous metallurgy, but also stress and design engineers who might want to understand more fully the specifications of the materials they are considering for their designs. He wrote the eight articles to summarize the field's literature of the early 1970s for his own convenience, but at invitation, published them as a series in the Heat Treatment of Metals during 1967-77, and collected them for a first edition of the volume in 1980. This book was released on 2018-01-24 with total page 82 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Additive manufacturing (AM), also known as 3D printing, has gained significant interest in aerospace, energy, automotive and medical industries due to its capabilities of manufacturing components that are either prohibitively costly or impossible to manufacture by conventional processes. Among the various additive manufacturing processes for metallic components, electron beam melting (EBM) and selective laser melting (SLM) are two of the most widely used powder bed based processes, and have shown great potential for manufacturing high-end critical components, such as turbine blades and customized medical implants. The futures of the EBM and SLM are doubtlessly promising, but to fully realize their potentials there are still many challenges to overcome. Inconel 718 (IN718) is a nickel-base superalloy and has impressive combination of good mechanical properties and low cost. Though IN718 is being mostly used as a turbine disk material now, the initial introduction of IN718 was to overcome the poor weldability of superalloys in 1960s, since sluggish precipitation of strengthening phases ?’/?’’ enables good resistance to strain-age cracking during welding or post weld heat treatment. Given the similarity between AM and welding processes, IN718 has been widely applied to the metallic AM field to facilitate the understandings of process-microstructure-property relationships. The work presented in this licentiate thesis aims to better understand microstructures and mechanical properties EBM and SLM IN718, which have not been systematically investigated. Microstructures of EBM and SLM IN718 have been characterized with scanning electron microscopy (SEM), transmission electron microscopy (TEM) and correlated with the process conditions. Monotonic mechanical properties (e.g., Vickers microhardness and tensile properties) have also been measured and rationalized with regards to the microstructure evolutions before and after heat treatments. For EBM IN718, the results show the microstructure is not homogeneous but dependant on the location in the components, and the anisotropic mechanical properties are probably attributed to alignment of porosities rather than texture. Post heat treatment can slightly increase the mechanical strength compared to the as-manufactured condition but does not alter the anisotropy. SLM IN718 shows significantly different microstructure and mechanical properties to EBM IN718. The as-manufactured SLM IN718 has very fine dendritic microstructure and Laves phases in the interdendrites, and is “work-hardened” by the residual strains and dislocations present in the material. Mechanical properties are different between horizontally and vertically built samples, and heat treatment can minimize this difference. Results from this licentiate thesis provide the basis for the further research on the cyclic mechanical properties of EBM and SLM IN718, which would be the focus of following phase of the Ph.D. research.

Book Study on Mechanical Properties and Microstructure of Aluminium Alloy 63401 Reinforced with Silicon Carbide Powder

Download or read book Study on Mechanical Properties and Microstructure of Aluminium Alloy 63401 Reinforced with Silicon Carbide Powder written by Independently Published and published by . This book was released on 2018-07-20 with total page 67 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In a metal matrix composite material an Al alloy is taken as metal matrix reinforcing with different type of reinforcing material like SiC, fly ash, Red mud etc in order to prepare different samples for testing different mechanical properties like hardness test, impact strength, tensile strength along with its wear behaviour, electrical conductivity so that it can be applied for better applications if the outcome shows improvement in the properties. The present research examine the mechanical properties and microstructure of aluminium alloy 63401 metal matrix composite reinforced with silicon carbide powder of different wt % i.e. 3%, 6% and 9% and different grain size. Conducted the experiment by keeping the SiC grain size constant at 74 μm, 149μm and 177 μm and varied the SiC weight %. The mechanical properties i.e., hardness, tensile strength and impact strength were studied by preparing the desired samples by stir casting method. From the obtained results we found that more the weight percentage of SiC powder, hardness, impact strength and tensile strength increases. The percentage elongation decreases with increase in weight percentage of SiC and increases with decrease in grain size of SiC. Also microstructure shows the nearly distribution of reinforcement material.
