Book Ontogenic and Nutritional Regulation of the Somatotropin insulin like Growth Factor System in Growing Pigs

Download or read book Ontogenic and Nutritional Regulation of the Somatotropin insulin like Growth Factor System in Growing Pigs written by Robert John Harrell and published by . This book was released on 1998 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The overall objective of this dissertation was to examine the developmental effects of the somatotropin/insulin-like growth factor axis on protein and lipid metabolism and how this axis can be modulated by nutrition in growing pigs. The administration of exogenous porcine somatotropin (pST) did not affect growth performance $(P> .10), $ but did increase accretion rates of protein $(P .10)$ were found in circulating IGFBP-3 or IGFBP-2 concentrations. However, circulating concentrations of IGF-I and IGFBP-3 were increased $(P .10)$ in vitro glucose uptake and utilization by adipose tissue explants or the glucose response $(P> .10)$ to an insulin challenge. The nutritional regulation of the IGF system was examined by feeding pigs diets that ranged from low to high protein concentration in relation to their requirements. Protein restriction only minimally reduced $(P = .11)$ circulating IGF-I concentrations and did not affect circulating IGFBP $(P> .10).$ The pST challenge increased $(P .10)$ the IGFBP response to the pST challenge. The results presented here demonstrate that the pST regulation of growth is age-dependent and the age effects appear to be similar between different tissues. Also, only severe protein restriction alters circulating levels of components of the IGF system.

Book Metabolic Modifiers

Download or read book Metabolic Modifiers written by National Research Council and published by National Academies. This book was released on 1994-02-01 with total page 94 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the past decade, animal scientists have learned that administering recombinantly derived somatotropin (growth hormone) to cows improves milk production and that giving beta-adrenergic agonists to meat animals improves productivity and leanness. In order for these metabolic modifiers to yield benefits, however, sound management of the animals' nutrition is necessary. This volume reports on how these substances work in the animals' metabolism, what effects they might have on nutrient requirements of domestic livestock, and what information should be developed further by investigators. The book explores the current understanding of the biology, structure, mechanisms of action, and treatment effects of somatotropin, beta-adrenergic agonists, and anabolic steroids. A companion volume to the Nutrient Requirements of Domestic Animals series, this authoritative volume will be required reading for animal scientists, researchers, veterinarians, livestock farmers, and faculty and students in university animal veterinary science programs.

Book Recent Advances in Animal Nutrition 1991

Download or read book Recent Advances in Animal Nutrition 1991 written by W. Haresign and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2017-01-31 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent Advances in Animal Nutrition: 1991 is an annual review of the changes and updates in the field of animal nutrition, especially progresses in the study of feeds. The book is divided into five parts. Part I discusses topics related to pig nutrition and feeds such as energy-protein interactions and improved utilization of amino acids. Part II covers the nutrition and growth of poultry. Part III talks about the legislations concerned with feed manufacture, and Part IV deals with nutrition of different animals such as chicks and ruminants. The text is recommended for agriculturists, zoologists, and those involved in the development and manufacture of feeds who would like to know more about the nutrition of agriculturally important animals.
