Book Water Productivity in Agriculture

Download or read book Water Productivity in Agriculture written by J. W. Kijne and published by CABI. This book was released on 2003 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First title in a major new seriesAddresses improving water productivity to relieve problems of scarcity and competition to provide for food and environmental securityDraws from scientists having a multitude of disciplines to approach this important problemIn a large number of developing countries, policy makers and researchers are increasingly aware of the conflicting demands on water, and look at agriculture to be more effective in its use of water. Focusing on both irrigated and rain-fed agriculture, this book gives a state of the art review of the limits and opportunities for improving water productivity in crop production. It demonstrates how efficiency of water use can be enhanced to maximize yields. The book represents the first in a new series of volumes resulting from the Comprehensive Assessment of Water Management in Agriculture, a research program conducted by the CGIAR's Future Harvest Centres, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations and partners worldwide. It will be of significant interest to those working in areas of soil and crop science, water management, irrigation, and development studies.

Book Abiotic stress mechanisms and enhancement in crops Physiological and biochemical approaches

Download or read book Abiotic stress mechanisms and enhancement in crops Physiological and biochemical approaches written by Arpna Kumari and published by Frontiers Media SA. This book was released on 2024-08-20 with total page 226 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Changes in natural ecosystems can affect biodiversity on a global scale, which in turn affects global food production. Climate change develops under different environmental conditions such as high CO2 concentration, ultraviolet radiation, temperature, salinity, rainfall intensity, etc., causing an increase in the growth of new weeds and pathogens. All these factors alone and in complex can reduce growth, complicate photosynthesis, and reduce the physiological and biochemical responses of plants. On the other hand, studies in recent years have shown that the development of a dual strategy of breeding for stress tolerance and introducing stress tolerant plants into production systems to increase their resistance to various stresses is particularly relevant today. Therefore, research related to physiological, biochemical and molecular responses of plants is of paramount importance to authorize the effects of climate-induced stresses and the likely mechanisms of resistance and/or factors mitigating these stresses in crop plants. Climate change is a dynamic, multifaceted system of modifications to environmental conditions that include abiotic and biotic factors in the world. Therefore, rapid development of studies on the integration between physiological, biochemical and molecular responses that can admit a systems analysis of plants is important, and knowledge of molecular mechanisms will provide breeding programs with relevance to obtaining cultivars tolerant to abiotic stresses with increased productivity. Under this research topic, reviews, new methods and scientific articles will be selected for publication based on applications to agriculture under climate change. This research topic will cover the following themes: - Adaptive capacity of plants to withstand climate change - The role of biodiversity in sustainable agriculture - Manipulation of microclimate for plant productivity - Role of plant extracts in plant stress mitigation - Phytoremediation and bioremediation factors for crop improvement - Perspective of underutilized crops under climate change - Contribution of plant secondary metabolism to stress tolerance - Plant tissue culture and crop improvement - The role of nanotechnology for climate-resilient agriculture - Pre-breeding and germplasm characterization for the development of agronomically relevant crop traits

Book excerpt: Plant Analysis: An Interpretation Manual 2nd Edition is an easily accessible compilation of data summarising the range of nutrient concentration limits for crops, pastures, vegetables, fruit trees, vines, ornamentals and forest species. This information is valuable in assessing the effectiveness of fertiliser programs and for monitoring longer term changes in crop nutritional status. New to this edition: *Volume and scope of information accessed from the literature has expanded several-fold. Interpretation criteria for 294 species have been compiled in the tables from more than 1872 published papers. *New chapter on nutrient criteria for forest species. *Includes guidelines for collecting, handling and analysing plant material. An entire chapter is devoted to the identification of nutrient deficiency and toxicity symptoms.

Book Silicon in Plants

    Book Details:
  • Author : Durgesh Kumar Tripathi
  • Publisher : CRC Press
  • Release : 2016-12-08
  • ISBN : 1315352311
  • Pages : 674 pages

Download or read book Silicon in Plants written by Durgesh Kumar Tripathi and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2016-12-08 with total page 674 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the present era, rapid industrialization and urbanization has resulted in unwanted physiological, chemical, and biological changes in the environment that have harmful effects on crop quality and productivity. This situation is further worsened by the growing demand for food due to an ever increasing population. This forces plant scientists and agronomists to look forward for alternative strategies to enhance crop production and produce safer, healthier foods. Biotic and abiotic stresses are major constraints to crop productivity and have become an important challenge to agricultural scientists and agronomists due to the fact that both stress factors considerably reduce agriculture production worldwide per year. Silicon has various effects on plant growth and development, as well as crop yields. It increases photosynthetic activity, creates better disease resistance, reduces heavy metal toxicity, improves nutrient imbalance, and enhances drought tolerance. Silicon in Plants: Advances and Future Prospects presents the beneficial effects of silicon in improving productivity in plants and enhancing the capacity of plants to resist stresses from environmental factors. It compiles recent advances made worldwide in different leading laboratories concerning the role of silicon in plant biology in order to make these outcomes easily accessible to academicians, researchers, industrialists, and students. Nineteen chapters summarize information regarding the role of silicon in plants, their growth and development, physiological and molecular responses, and responses against the various abiotic stresses.

Book Plant Genetics and Molecular Breeding

Download or read book Plant Genetics and Molecular Breeding written by Pedro Martínez-Gómez and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2019-07-11 with total page 626 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of new plant varieties is a long and tedious process involving the generation of large seedling populations for the selection of the best individuals. While the ability of breeders to generate large populations is almost unlimited, the selection of these seedlings is the main factor limiting the generation of new cultivars. Molecular studies for the development of marker-assisted selection (MAS) strategies are particularly useful when the evaluation of the character is expensive, time-consuming, or with long juvenile periods. The papers published in the Special Issue “Plant Genetics and Molecular Breeding” report highly novel results and testable new models for the integrative analysis of genetic (phenotyping and transmission of agronomic characters), physiology (flowering, ripening, organ development), genomic (DNA regions responsible for the different agronomic characters), transcriptomic (gene expression analysis of the characters), proteomic (proteins and enzymes involved in the expression of the characters), metabolomic (secondary metabolites), and epigenetic (DNA methylation and histone modifications) approaches for the development of new MAS strategies. These molecular approaches together with an increasingly accurate phenotyping will facilitate the breeding of new climate-resilient varieties resistant to abiotic and biotic stress, with suitable productivity and quality, to extend the adaptation and viability of the current varieties.
