Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A one-of-a-kind book for researchers interested in finfish nutrition Handbook of Nutrient Requirements of Finfish provides a summary of qualitative and quantitative nutrient requirements for almost all cultured finfish for which a significant amount of nutritional information now exists. Information is presented by species and includes how each species is cultured, an index of production, regional locations where each species is being cultured, examples of purified or test diets and special conditions required for laboratory studies, nutrient requirements and practical diet formulation. Discussions of special diets and feeding practices are included for certain species. This book will be a useful guide for students, researchers, practicing nutritionists, aquaculturists, and feed manufacturers interested in fish nutrition.

Download or read book Influence of Corn Oil and Beef Tallow on Growth of Channel Catfish written by Harry K. Dupree and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the quantity of a dietary fat offered to fish was increased, the iodine number of deposited fat approached that of the ingested fat. Change was greater with diets that contained corn oil than beef tallow suggested more efficient digestion and absorption of corn oil than beef tallow.

Book Biology and Culture of Channel Catfish

Download or read book Biology and Culture of Channel Catfish written by C.S. Tucker and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2004-09-30 with total page 686 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The history of channel catfish farming in the United States serves as a model for the development of pond-based aquaculture industries worldwide. Channel catfish farming is the largest and economically most important aquaculture industry in the United States. In 2003, over 300,000 metric tons (662 million pounds) of channel catfish were processed, representing about half the total United States aquaculture production. Demand for farm-raised catfish is strong, with record processing years in 2002 and 2003. In 22 chapters written by active scientists in the field, Biology and Culture of Channel Catfish comprehensively synthesizes over 30 years of research on this American icon. Throughout the book, fundamental biological aspects of channel catfish are linked to practical culture techniques. Topics include: • Latest information on reproductive physiology, genetics, and breeding • Comprehensive treatment of catfish nutrition, feeds, and feeding practices • Water quality management and pond dynamics • In-depth review of immunology in channel catfish • Practical information on diseases and health management • Techniques for commercial culture, including innovative techniques such as raceways, recirculating systems, and partitioned aquaculture systems • Catfish economics and marketing • Exploration of environmental concerns, including recommended Best Management Practices

Book Effect of Dietary Lipids on Fatty Acid Composition and Hematological Parameters of Channel Catfish Ictalurus Punctatus Exposed to Different Temperature Challenges

Download or read book Effect of Dietary Lipids on Fatty Acid Composition and Hematological Parameters of Channel Catfish Ictalurus Punctatus Exposed to Different Temperature Challenges written by Clifford C. O'Neal and published by . This book was released on 2005 with total page 300 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A series of studies was conducted to determine the effects of different dietary lipid sources (menhaden oil, MO; catfish oil, CO; or beef tallow, BT) on fatty acid composition (neutral and polar), selected hematological parameters, and cold tolerance in channel catfish Ictalurus punctatus . Significant differences existed in the neutral fatty acid profile of fingerling channel catfish fed diets containing different dietary lipid sources over a 12-week feeding trial. Catfish fed the MO diet contained the highest concentrations of n-3 highly unsaturated fatty acid content (HUFA) and docosahexaenoic acid (DHA). The MO diet also increased concentrations of alpha-linolenic acid (ALA) and total unsaturation content in the polar lipids. Fish fed diets containing BT had significantly higher levels of stearic acid and oleic acid concentration than fish fed MO or CO diets. Exposure to a gradual decrease in water temperature increased monounsaturated fatty acid content within the neutral lipids of catfish fed BT and MO diets, whereas a rapid decrease in water temperature increased 18:4n-3, eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA), and DHA in fish fed BT diets, but only DHA within fish fed the CO diet. For polar lipids, total monounsaturated fatty acids increased in fish fed BT and CO diets after exposure to a gradual decrease in water temperature. A rapid decrease in water temperature increased the concentrations of DHA and n-3 HUFAs within fish fed BT, CO, or MO diets. Manipulation of dietary lipids did not mitigate effects of the temperature stress subjected to the juvenile catfish. Results from a finishing diet study indicated no differences existed between MO and CO in terms of influencing n-3 HUFA content in the juvenile channel catfish fillet. Therefore, CO may be successfully substituted for MO in formulated diets without adversely affecting n-3 HUFA content in channel catfish. In addition, I found that channel catfish contain a putative delta-6 desaturase-like gene. However, future research is needed to determine the activity level of this gene and what dietary feed ingredients would maximize the activity level of the presumptive coded enzyme to produce a more marketable product for the channel catfish industry.
