The Size of treated areas varied from small experimental plots of 25 acres to one that included more than 400, 000 acres. An experimental aerial treatment of a forest area near Beltsville, Md., was made, using a dosage of 5 pounds of ddt to an acre; and a 1-mile section of a West Virginia bass stream was treated experimentally with a dosage of 1 pound of ddt to an acre. Book Animals as Sentinels of Environmental Health Hazards

Download or read book Animals as Sentinels of Environmental Health Hazards written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 1991-02-01 with total page 173 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Studying animals in the environment may be a realistic and highly beneficial approach to identifying unknown chemical contaminants before they cause human harm. Animals as Sentinels of Environmental Health Hazards presents an overview of animal-monitoring programs, including detailed case studies of how animal health problemsâ€"such as the effects of DDT on wild bird populationsâ€"have led researchers to the sources of human health hazards. The authors examine the components and characteristics required for an effective animal-monitoring program, and they evaluate numerous existing programs, including in situ research, where an animal is placed in a natural setting for monitoring purposes.

Book Some Effects of DDT on the Guppy and the Brown Trout

Download or read book Some Effects of DDT on the Guppy and the Brown Trout written by Susan Frances King and published by . This book was released on 1962 with total page 32 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Editor's note: This paper was prepared under the direction of Assistant Professor Kathryn M. Eschenberg, Mount Holyoke College and was accepted by the Faculty in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the degree of Bachelor of Arts with Honor, 1961. Despite certain limitations, described below, the paper (somewhat condensed from the original) has been accepted for publication because (1) it is an unusual and excellent study by an undergraduate, and (2) so little information is available on the subject treated. Biometricians may criticize the paper from the standpoint of small numbers and need for replication. One reviewer says: "One of the most interesting observations related to the apparent increase in resistance following exposure to effectively sublethal levels. Part of the increase, but likely only part, was due to the previous selective killing of weaker individuals. Good experimental procedure would require that this test be repeated, with parallel series of previously unexposed fish....There is need for a replicated study of numbers of young born to guppies held in DDT, especially because the numbers are so small." It is the Editor's hope that the limitations of the paper may stimulate further work in this important area.

This book was released on 1961 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: DDT was sprayed at 0.5 pound per acre for elm spanworm control in two drainages in north Georgia in both 1959 and 1960. In one drainage, precautions were taken to avoid the stream, and no significant mortality to aquatic organisms resulted. In the other drainage, DDT reached the stream in a normal spray operation, and serious depletion of aquatic invertebrates resulted. Recovery of bottom organisms was rapid, and total numbers of invertebrates were up to pre-treatment levels after four months.
