Book excerpt: This study was conducted to determine, within the cultural context of Lebanese society, if the introduction of additional specific reinforcers (Praise and Candy) can improve the performance of 3-year old nursery school children on intelligence test. The study also explored relative effect of socioeconomic classes (SES) and Sex on IQ scores. The Mental Development Scale for Preschool Children (Forms A and B), by Professor Naim Atiyeh was used as the dependent variable. The experimental design adopted was a 2 x 2 x 4 (Sex x SES x Reinforcement) Pre test-Retest, randomized and controlled. A sample of 64 children (M age = 3) from 11 nursery schools in West Beirut was randomly selected, with equal numbers as to Sex and two social groups (Low and Middle). To establish the initial IQ state, the researcher and another qualified examiner administered Form A of the Scale to all subjects (Pretest). Based on IQ scores, children were grouped into three levels of Low, Middle, and High IQ. Eight equivalent sub-groups were randomly formed and assigned to the four experimental conditions: Candy, Praise, Praise plus Candy, and Control. One sub-group from each experimental condition was randomly assigned to each examiner. Three weeks later, Form B was administered to the eight experimental groups (Retest). The sub-group that obtained the highest gain (Praise + Candy) was retested on Form A for reinforcement withdrawal effect. ANOVA and t_-test were used to test for the null hypotheses. Although some gain was observed in the performance of children under the various treatment conditions, the resu1ts,nevertheless, were not statistically significant. A possible trend, however, was observed in the performance of children from Low IQ level. Though IQ level was not initially contemplated as a separate variable, Chi Square and t_tests were performed.
