Book excerpt: A 3-year research study was initiated in the spring of 1985 to study the direct effects of aerial application of the herbicide glyphosate on the vegetation in the boreal forest region of southeastern Manitoba near Pine Falls and indirect effects on wildlife utilization of the treated habitat. Four permanent study areas were established, two treated and two control, at Sandy River West. Standard methods were used to assess botanical and wildlife parameters and plant abundance and physical condition were documented for each species in the vegetation plots. Songbirds, small mammals and ungulates were studied to determine their responses to habitat alterations induced by the herbicide. The fate and persistance of glyphosate was monitored through analysis of foliage and soil samples and mylar sheets were used to estimate actual spray deposition.

The substrata were permitted to colonize with periphytic algae for a period of 41 to 50 days, after which samples were collected and exposed in the laboratory to concentrations of glyphosate (added as the commerical formulation Roundup) ranging from 0 to 1800 mg/L. Carbon fixation rates during the first four hours after herbicide treatment were measured, and the change in rate relative to untreated controls was used to assess the short-term effects of glyphosate on algal photosynthesis.
