Download or read book Effectiveness of the IPad in Enhancing the Mand Repertoire for Children with Autism written by Melissa L. King and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The iPad with the Proloquo2Go application has taken the world of autism by storm, and given individuals that do not have a voice, a voice. This study looks at the effectiveness of the iPad with the Proloquo2Go application to enhance the manding repertoire for children with autism. Participants included three children (2 girls and 1 boy) diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder, or exhibiting characteristics of an autism spectrum disorder, between the ages of 3 and 5. A multiple probe design across participants was used to assess the effectiveness of the iPad. Methods included completing The Reinforcer Assessment for Individuals with Severe Disabilities (RAISD) with the parents and/or teachers of each participant and running a six stimuli preference assessment before implementing each Phase. Pretest probes were conducted before implementing Phases 1 through 4. These phases were comparable to Phases 1 through 4 of the Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS) (Bondy & Frost, 1994). Results of this study support that children with autism can acquire the skills needed to mand using the iPad with the Proloquo2Go application with training comparable to that of the Picture Exchange Communication System (Bondy & Frost, 1994). In addition, vocal requesting increased for the participants during the training phases in comparison to pretest probes.

Book Effectiveness of Proloquo2GoT M in Enhancing Communication in Children with Autism During ABA Therapy

Download or read book Effectiveness of Proloquo2GoT M in Enhancing Communication in Children with Autism During ABA Therapy written by Taylor Eastin Krcek and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 183 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Autism is a bio-neurological developmental disorder presenting in early childhood that has a profound effect on an individual's ability to communicate. The iPad® with the Proloquo2GoT̳M̳ app is a multilingual Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) solution designed to assist people who have difficulty speaking or cannot speak at all. This study examines the effectiveness of the Proloquo2GoT̳M̳ app delivered via iPad® to enhance the tacting, manding, and verbal completion repertoires of children with autism. Participants included five children between the ages of three and four years old diagnosed with an autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and with low to moderate receptive and expressive language skills. Prior to the study, participants were assessed using the Verbal Behavior Milestones Assessment and Placement Program (VB-MAPP), the Communication and Symbolic Behavior Scales (CSBS) Joint Attention and Constructive Play subscales, and the Motor Imitation Scale (MIS). Three participants (Group 1) scored low (2, 7, and 8 on the MIS; 1 on the CSBS; and Level 1 on the VB-MAPP), and two participants (Group 2) scored mid-range (18 and 20 on the MIS; 3 on the CSBS; and Level 2 on the VB-MAPP) on assessments of joint attention, constructive play, and motor imitation. A multiple baseline across behaviors design was employed to assess the effectiveness of Proloquo2GoT̳M̳ in enhancing tacting, manding, and verbal completion during Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapeutic sessions for both groups. The Proloquo2GoT̳M̳ intervention was compared to American Sign Language (ASL) at baseline. Results of this study provide insight into the usefulness of Proloquo2GoT̳M̳ in enhancing communication skills for children with ASD and complex communication needs during Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) therapy. Specifically, this study provides evidence that using Proloquo2GoT̳M̳ with some children with ASD and complex communication needs who are in early preverbal stages may be useful in enhancing tacting, manding, and verbal completion skills during ABA therapy, and using Proloquo2GoT̳M̳ with children who are in later preverbal stages may be useful as a more accessible form of communication in addition to ASL.

Book Effects of Task Clarification and an Adaptive Computer Software on Implementation of Mand Training Using an IPad as a Speech Generated Device

Download or read book Effects of Task Clarification and an Adaptive Computer Software on Implementation of Mand Training Using an IPad as a Speech Generated Device written by Ashley Mckenzie Parnell and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Mand training is an evidence-based instructional method and a primary focus in behavioral language training for children with autism. A rapidly growing research base supports manding training using hand-held computing technologies (e.g., iPad®, iPod®) as speech generating devices (SGD) for establishing a manding repertoire in children with autism. To ensure optimal learning efficacy and efficiency, procedures must be implemented with high levels of accuracy, which requires that staff be well-trained. However, research evaluating methods for training staff to implement mand training procedures with the iPad® and application Proloquo2GoTM as an SGD has not yet been conducted. Therefore, this study examined the effectiveness of job aids followed by Train to Code, an interactive observation and behavioral coding software system to teach preschool teachers to implement mand training using the iPad® as an SGD with the application Proloquo2GoTM. The TTC training programs used errorless training procedures with performance-based feedback to train expert observation and coding of behavioral events (i.e. mand training sequential components) via video files. As demonstrated in a multi-component within a multiple probe design across participants, all participants' teaching accuracy increased following the initiation of the job aid condition; however, TTC was required to establish high levels of accuracy of mand training procedures during role-play sessions with a confederate. In addition, results indicated improved performance relative to baseline during instructional sessions with a child with autism or a developmental delay, and performance accuracy maintained at one-month follow-up. These results suggest that job aids followed by TTC may be an effective and feasible method for training individuals to implement mand training using an iPad® and the application Proloquo2GoTM.

Book The Verbal Behavior Approach

Download or read book The Verbal Behavior Approach written by Mary Lynch Barbera and published by Jessica Kingsley Publishers. This book was released on 2007-05-15 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Verbal Behavior (VB) approach is a form of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA), that is based on B.F. Skinner's analysis of verbal behavior and works particularly well with children with minimal or no speech abilities. In this book Dr. Mary Lynch Barbera draws on her own experiences as a Board Certified Behavior Analyst and also as a parent of a child with autism to explain VB and how to use it. This step-by-step guide provides an abundance of information about how to help children develop better language and speaking skills, and also explains how to teach non-vocal children to use sign language. An entire chapter focuses on ways to reduce problem behavior, and there is also useful information on teaching toileting and other important self-help skills, that would benefit any child. This book will enable parents and professionals unfamiliar with the principles of ABA and VB to get started immediately using the Verbal Behavior approach to teach children with autism and related disorders.

Book The Picture Exchange Communication System Training Manual

Download or read book The Picture Exchange Communication System Training Manual written by Lori Frost and published by . This book was released on 2002-01-01 with total page 396 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents an updated description of The Picture Exchange Communication System (PECS). It begins with a discussion of the "big picture," or the authors view on the importance of laying the foundation for communication training by systematically structuring the learning environment (be it in the home, community or school). This approach, The Pyramid Approach to Education, embraces the principals of broad-spectrum applied behavior analysis and emphasizes the development of functional communication skills, independent of communication modality. The Pyramid Approach is one of the few approaches that encourages creativity and innovation on the teacher's part through databased decision making.

Book Effects of the IPad and Proloquo2Go Compared to Other Means of Communication on Participation of Children who are Nonverbal and Diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder During Classroom Group Activites

Download or read book Effects of the IPad and Proloquo2Go Compared to Other Means of Communication on Participation of Children who are Nonverbal and Diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder During Classroom Group Activites written by Patricia L. Brennan and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Participation is often limited in academic settings for children who are non-verbal and diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD). Children with ASD typically require greater levels of support to enable participation than their typically developing peers. Participation is an essential occupational role for students to fulfill because it encourages learning, earning better grades, and completing classes. Several studies indicate that the use of technology with children with ASD could change behavior, assist with making choices, and increase communication; however, no studies looked at increasing effective participation or decreasing required support in group classroom activities. The purpose of this quantitative study was to determine the effectiveness of the application, Proloquo2Go, on the iPad, compared to other means of communication: smart board, picture exchange communication system (PECS), and no technology, in increasing participation and decreasing required support in children who are nonverbal and diagnosed with Autism Spectrum Disorder during group classroom activities. When the iPad with Proloquo2Go was incorporated into the group classroom activity, it effectively decreased the overall level of support required for children to participate in academic occupations. Use of the iPad with Proloquo2Go to respond to discrete academic opportunities required less support than use of no technology and equal support to the use of PECS or a SmartBoard.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Help remediate—and in some cases eliminate—autism and other developmental delays in young children, even in as little as 15 minutes a day with this toolkit of behavioral practices that can be taught at home. Developmental delays and signs of autism usually show up before 18 months of age, yet children are often not diagnosed until they are 4 or 5 years old. In Turn Autism Around, Dr. Mary Barbera explains why parents can't afford to worry and wait in long lines for evaluations and treatment while not knowing how to help their children. She empowers parents, caregivers, and early intervention professionals to regain hope and take back control with simple strategies to dramatically improve outcomes for their children. Dr. Barbera has created a new approach to teaching kids with developmental delays that uses the science of Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) married with a positive, child-friendly methodology that any parent can use—whether or not their child has delays—to learn to teach communication skills, socialization strategies, as well as tackle sleep, eating, potty training, and behavior challenges in a positive, effective, and lasting way. Turn Autism Around is the first book of its kind that calls attention to an important fact: parents can make a tremendous impact on their child's development through behavioral practices taught at home, even in as little as 15 minutes a day. Her program shows these autism and developmental delays can be remediated, and in some cases, delays can be caught up altogether, if parents intervene while the child is young. This book is for parents of young children aged one-to-five years who are passionate about helping their child as well as learning how they can change the trajectory of their child's and family's life.

Book Comparing Picture Exchange and a Voice Output Communication Aid in Young Children with Autism

Download or read book Comparing Picture Exchange and a Voice Output Communication Aid in Young Children with Autism written by Elizabeth Rishel Lorah and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 121 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Center for Disease Control estimates that one in 88 births result in a diagnosis of autism (CDC, 2012). Of those individuals diagnosed with autism approximately 25-61% fail to develop vocal output capabilities (Weitxz, Dexter, & Moore, 1997). The use of Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) systems, such as Picture Exchange (PE) and Voice Output Communication Aids (VOCA) has been demonstrated as effective for those individuals to acquire a mand repertoire (Mirenda, 2003). The focus of the current study was to compare mand acquisition using PE and the iPad as a VOCA, in terms of acquisition rate and participant device preference, and with regard to collateral effects on vocalizations and disruptive behaviors. Additionally, the study evaluated the effectiveness of a teaching strategy using constant time delay with full-physical prompts (Sigafoos, Doss, & Reichel, 1989) in the acquisition of a mand repertoire using PE and the iPad as a VOCA, in five preschool aged children with autism. Finally, the devices were assessed in terms of their social validity. Three participants acquired the ability to communicate using the iPad as a VOCA more readily and two participants acquired the ability to communicate more quickly using PE, while the overall rate of independent manding was higher for four participants using the VOCA. The results of the study also indicate that the use of a constant time delay procedure with full-physical prompts was effective in the acquisition of both PE and the VOCA device. Regarding preference, four participants demonstrated a clear preference for the VOCA device and one for PE, when presented with the option to respond with either device. With respect to collateral effects, the data were largely inconclusive. For one participant there was an overall increase in vocalizations, for one participant there was an overall decrease in vocalizations, for the remaining three there was no systematic change in their rate of vocalizations during or following communication training. Regarding disruptive behaviors, an overall decrease in the occurrence was seen for two participants, for the remaining three the rates of occurrence did not change systematically following communication training. Finally, in terms of social validity, both the VOCA device and PE were found to be acceptable communication tools, with educators reporting that they would not only include such training within their classroom routines, but would also recommend its use in the future.

Book Where There s Technology There s a Way

Download or read book Where There s Technology There s a Way written by Meghan Guarnieri and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 142 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This study examines the effectiveness of using iPads in a classroom environment as a way to better communicate with students who have autism spectrum disorder. The researcher used various interview questions, listed in Appendix A, to gather teachers' perspectives on the usage of iPads in their classrooms at a special education facility. The researcher found by allowing autistic students to use iPads in a classroom, monitoring the time spent on the devices, and how it is used was an effective way for teachers to communicate and work with them. The iPads were proven to be an effective way for the autistic students and teachers to be able to communicate with one another because it allowed the student to share what they were trying to say with their teachers without having to be verbal. Additionally, the researcher learned that speech language pathologists within the classrooms also guide students' iPad use and communication with others by assisting them and showing them how to perform specific actions."--Abstract, leaf 3.
