Book excerpt: Imagery use is beneficial to performing golf tasks, such as putting (Smith et al, 2007; Taylor & Shaw, 2002), yet research has not examined the experiences of collegiate golfers in various imagery interventions. To understand how collegiate golfers experience imagery interventions, this study examined their experiences in different imagery interventions using a case study-mixed methods design. Female NCAA Division III golfers participated in a three-week, six-session traditional imagery (n = 3) or PETTLEP (n = 2; Holmes & Collins, 2001) intervention, which included guided imagery through golf-specific imagery scripts. Participants completed a pre- and post-intervention survey that included the Sport Imagery Ability Questionnaire (SIAQ; Williams & Cumming, 2011). Participants were asked to create imagery scripts for the golf task of each session and to practice imagery and record their experiences at least three times via a Qualtrics survey. Upon completion of the intervention, we conducted post-intervention individual interviews to understand their experiences during the intervention. Visual and graphical analysis results indicated an improvement in golf scores from onset of the intervention. Reflexive thematic analysis indicated a positive experience from both imagery groups towards the imagery intervention and two overarching themes for their imagery use: cognitive (e.g., slowing down, awareness of environment, and increased shot intention) and motivational (e.g., increased focus, self-efficacy, and performance). Traditional imagery was most effective when participants imagined their environment. However, PETTLEP imagery was most beneficial when participants imaged physical and emotion. Member reflection sessions were conducted to enhance trustworthiness. This case study suggests that sport psychology professionals may consider using traditional techniques to introduce imagery followed by PETTLEP for skill development. To maximize the effectiveness of PETTLEP, longer programs could be implemented with more sport-specific components, such as having golfers wear uniforms, hold specific golf items, and feeling confident and calm.

Book excerpt: Author's abstract: Studies have suggested that imagery has a positive effect on performance in a variety of sports. The PETTLEP model (Holmes and Collins, 2001) includes the seven minimum elements sport psychologists incorporate into their imagery scripts. The PETTLEP model is the most comprehensive imagery model, thus providing the most functional equivalence. Golf is the interest of this study, with research stating that imagery has an overall positive impact on golf performance (Nicholls & Polman, 2005). However, studies involving the PETTLEP model have not been investigated thoroughly. There are several shots that have not been studied with the PETTLEP model, therefore this investigation will aim to shrink the gap in literature by measuring the impact on a short 30-yard shot. Thus, it was hypothesized that the use of a PETTLEP imagery intervention will significantly increase golfer’s short-shot accuracy to the pin. Additionally, it was hypothesized that imagery ability will increase across phases. The participants were 5 skilled (average score > 100) male golfers. A single-subject, ABA (baseline, intervention, return-to-baseline) design was implemented. The study occurred over a 5-week period at a local golf course. Each golfer attempted 20 shots from 30 yards away. Imagery ability was measured using the Movement Imagery Questionnaire-Revised (MIQ-R) and the Motivational Imagery Ability Measure for Sport (MIAMS). The effectiveness of the imagery intervention on short-shot accuracy was assessed using visual inspection and graphs. Results demonstrated improvements in accuracy to the pin for five out of five participants from baseline to intervention. Results evidenced that four out of five participants decreased in accuracy during the return-to-baseline phase. Two out of five participants increased in imagery ability during the intervention. Changes in mean and variability were also evaluated using effect sizes, and suggested that two out of five participants varied less during the intervention phase. Implications of the present study include underlining the impact PETTLEP imagery has on golf performance, specifically when utilized in a pre-performance routine. Results suggest that practicing PETTLEP imagery aids in short-shot accuracy and assists in improving imagery ability.

Specifically, imagery has been found to be extremely effective within the sport of golf (e.g., Nicholls & Polman, 2005; Woolfork, Parish, & Murphy's, 1985). For example, Ploszay, Gentner, Skinner, and Wrisberg (2006) found imagery to improve putting performance. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect that a PETTLEP imagery intervention implemented into a pre shot routine had on a full swing golf shot. A single subjects design was used with three conditions: imagery before pre shot routine, imagery after pre shot routine and a control condition. Participants were nine undergraduate volunteers with an average age of 19.3 years and an average golf score of 82.1. Three sets of data were recorded: total score, balls in A1 (the closest area to the pin in a standardized scoring target grid), and balls in A5 (anything outside of the grid). It was found that all imagery participants improved from baseline to intervention in all three aspects, while the control group elicited consistent or decreases in performance. Imagery had the greatest impact on performance for balls hit in A5. Implications from this study may benefit golfers of any skill level and sport psychology consultants working with golfers who want to increase their full swing shot accuracy.
