Download or read book Effect of Workplace Incivility on Job Satisfaction and Turnover Intentions in India written by Naman Sharma and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Purpose - The purpose of this paper is to examine the effects of workplace incivility on job satisfaction and employees' turnover intentions in Indian work settings. Design/methodology/approach - Data were collected randomly from 283 employees at various restaurants in the Northern and Western parts of India via the survey method and, thereafter, hierarchical regression analysis was performed to analyze the data. Findings - The study established that moderate to high levels of workplace-incivility-related issues are present in India's restaurant industry. Regression analysis further revealed that workplace incivility is negatively related to job satisfaction and positively related to employee turnover in the Indian context as well. Practical implications - Relevant recommendations are presented to restaurant owners as well as HR practitioners that could curb unethical practices in Indian restaurants and promote civil behavior in the workplace. Originality/value - Relevant extant studies have recognized that there is a need to study workplace incivility in different cultures to establish the global relevance of the subject. This research studied the impact of workplace incivility on job satisfaction and turnover intentions with respect to Indian employees.

Book Antecedents and Outcomes of Work linked Couple Incivility

Download or read book Antecedents and Outcomes of Work linked Couple Incivility written by Morgan Dakota Jones and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 180 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Workplace incivility has been shown to have negative organizational and individual effects on people who experience this low-intensity deviant behavior. Research has recently begun to look at incivility as a form of modern discrimination that may be used to target out-groups within organizations, where out-groups are broadly defined. The first goal of the current study was to examine the impact of incivility on work-linked couples. Second, the present study sought to determine the effect that experiences of WLC incivility had on individual and organizational outcomes: burnout, job satisfaction, and turnover intentions. Finally, although the outcomes of incivility have been well-established, the antecedents of this phenomenon have been examined considerably less. Therefore, the present study sought to examine and explain the relationship between a climate for formality, gender, and WLC incivility. To accomplish these goals a snowball sampling method was used to recruit a total of 86 participants for an online survey. Hierarchal regression and bootstrapping mediation were used to analyze the data. Results showed that WLC incivility was predictive of burnout, job dissatisfaction, and turnover intentions. Furthermore, both burnout and job satisfaction were shown to mediate the relationship between WLC incivility and turnover intentions. The theoretical and practical implications of these results are discussed as well as potential areas for future research.

Book Taking a Closer Look at Workplace Incivility

Download or read book Taking a Closer Look at Workplace Incivility written by Rimma Charbal Tarraf and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this thesis was twofold. First, it sought to investigate whether taking a multi-foci approach to the study of workplace incivility would result in differential relations with affective commitment, job satisfaction, and turnover intentions. In general, the results were supported. When the source of incivility was measured jointly, relations between incivility and organizational outcomes were overestimated. Measuring incivility from a supervisor and a co-worker separately showed that incivility from a supervisor was more strongly associated with job satisfaction and turnover intentions. Co-worker incivility was more strongly associated with affective commitment. Second, this thesis critically assessed the dimensionality of the scale commonly used to measure workplace incivility. The Workplace Incivility Scale (Cortina, Magley, Williams, & Langhout, 2001) revealed two factors - covert and overt incivility. Covert incivility had stronger relationships with organizational outcomes than overt incivility. I draw on relational considerations to explain these findings and to discuss avenues for future research.

Book The Effects of Workplace Incivility on Job Satisfaction

Download or read book The Effects of Workplace Incivility on Job Satisfaction written by Rabbia Jamal and published by . This book was released on 2020 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scholars have baptized for investigation relating to the antecedents and sways of workplace incivility and means to condense it. To address this concern, this study proposed a theoretical framework that explains the linkages of workplace incivility with Job satisfaction. We theorized that incivility decreases employees' motivation at work, and increase emotional exhaustion. It will further lead to restricted OCB. These factors, in response, confine employees' job satisfaction. We further hypothesize that age, and gender complements the effect of incivility on job satisfaction. Hence, OCB, exhaustion, and motivation mediate, whereas age and gender moderate incivility job satisfaction nexus. We classified incivility into behavioral, experienced, and witnessed, Motivation was also classified into intrinsic and extrinsic. These relationships were theorized in a singular model to portray the overall impact of the variables occurring at once. Empirical validity was established through a survey conducted by means on a close-ended questionnaire from 272 employees working in Karachi. Results suggested that the effect of experienced incivility on job satisfaction was found to be insignificant however, there was a negative mediatory role of emotional exhaustion, whereas, OCB, extrinsic and intrinsic motivation had no mediatory effect. With regards to instigated incivility, it doesn't seem to have any effect on job satisfaction, however, emotional exhaustion and intrinsic motivation play a negative mediatory role. Witnessed incivility directly affect JS as its coefficient was negative and significant, however, no mediatory role was found. Lastly, Exhaustion has a negative effect on JS, whereas, motivations have a positive significant effect. The coefficient of OCB remained insignificant throughout. Hence, experiencing incivility at the workplace comes with a higher probability of being emotionally exhausted and thus leading to job dissatisfaction however intrinsic motivation can be a means of plummeting incivility.

Book The Cost of Bad Behavior

Download or read book The Cost of Bad Behavior written by Christine Pearson and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2009-07-09 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why incivility at work is a bigger problem than you suspect In an accessible and informative style, Pearson and Porath examine the toll that bad behavior can have on otherwise well-functioning companies. And they reveal strategies that successful organizations are using to stop incivility before it takes hold. Whether it's a standoffish coworker or an arrogant boss, incivility at the office doesn't just affect the moods of a few employees; it hurts an entire company. Consider these statistics: 12 percent of all employees say they've left jobs because they were treated badly. Fortune 1000 executives spend roughly seven weeks per year resolving employee conflicts. And an astonishing 95 percent of Americans say they've experienced rudeness at work. Christine Pearson and Christine Porath examine the devastating toll that bad behavior can have on otherwise well-functioning companies. Combining their own scientific research with stories from fields as diverse as criminology, education, and psychology, they show how to spot the roots of incivility, rip them out, and create a culture of respect. They urge managers to stop making excuses, set a zero-tolerance policy, and lead by example. Bestsellers like The No Asshole Rule and The Power of Nice have shown the hunger for more civility at work; now The Cost of Bad Behavior shows exactly what to do about it.

Book Workplace Loneliness as an Explanatory Mechanism in Incivility Outcomes

Download or read book Workplace Loneliness as an Explanatory Mechanism in Incivility Outcomes written by Declan Gilmer and published by . This book was released on 2021 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Researchers have studied loneliness as a modern health epidemic leading to myriad negative health effects, yet the literature lacks evidence of loneliness' antecedents and consequences in the workplace. This paper not only replicates previous work on workplace incivility, a pervasive yet understudied workplace stressor, it also contributes novel findings on the central role of loneliness in the relationship between workplace incivility and outcomes. I found that both general and workplace loneliness at least partially explain the relationship between incivility and several individual and organizational outcomes (increased emotional exhaustion, depression, and anxiety; increased turnover intentions, decreased job satisfaction, increased health-related absenteeism, and lower job performance). Workgroup civility norms did not appear to moderate the relationship between incivility and loneliness. I tested hypotheses using two datasets containing data from state corrections supervisors (Sample 1) and the general working population (Sample 2).

Book Workplace Incivility

Download or read book Workplace Incivility written by Jeannie Trudel and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This cross-sectional, correlational study ( N = 289) explored the relationships among workplace incivility, conflict management styles and their influence on perceived job performance, organizational commitment and turnover intentions. Differences between incivility target and instigator perspectives were also examined. Data were collected through a self-report survey questionnaire consisting of a battery of six scales. Research questions were tested through correlational and hierarchical regression analytic procedures. Findings revealed that incivility and conflict management styles influenced perceived job performance, organizational commitment and turnover intentions to varying degrees. Results remained significant even after controlling for organizational differences and demographic variables. For the job performance model, the use of an integrating conflict style positively contributed to perceived job performance, while the dominating style negatively contributed to the dependent variable. As for the organizational commitment model, an integrating conflict style and less incivility positively predicted organizational commitment, whereas a dominating conflict style and incivility made negative contributions to the regression equation. The turnover intent model indicated that the dominating conflict style and incivility positively predicted turnover, while the integrative style and lower level of incivility negatively predicted turnover intent. The influence of instigator and target incivility perspectives were similar on the dependent variables, with slight variations only in magnitude. Generally, findings reveal that individuals who used an integrating conflict style had higher perceived job performance, tended to be more civil and less inclined to engage in uncivil behaviors, as well as having a higher level of commitment to the organization and less likely to turnover. In contrast, individuals with a dominating conflict style were more likely to instigate incivility as well as be a target of incivility; scoring lower on organizational commitment along with a higher level of intent to quit. Instigators of incivility reported being targets of incivility, confirming a spiral effect where incivilities are exchanged. Findings support theoretical and empirical research on the deleterious effects of incivility on organizational outcomes. HRD interventions are highlighted as possible means for managing or curbing workplace incivility and improving organizational performance.

Book Civility Job Satisfaction and Intentions to Quit

Download or read book Civility Job Satisfaction and Intentions to Quit written by Andrew B. Brown and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 55 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Civility is an important research topic in today's work environment, especially given concerns about retaining employees in the increasingly mobile labor market (Pearson & Porath, 2005). Although much of the research on civil work behaviors focuses on the negative impact of incivility, ongoing research at the Veterans Administration (VA) utilizes a strengths-based approach that identifies ways to increase civility rather than to decrease incivility (Osatuke, Moore, Ward, Dyrenforth, & Belton, 2009). VA's civility research had found that workplace civility predicts organizational performance (Moore, Osatuke, & Howe, 2008), and that it exerts a positive influence on patient satisfaction (Osatuke et al., 2009) and employee job satisfaction (Moore, et al. 2008). While job satisfaction is important to consider, previous research suggests that employee intention to quit is the best leading indicator of actual employee turnover (Griffeth, Hom, & Gaertner, 2000), an important cost-related outcome for organizations. The current study examined the relationship between civility, job satisfaction, and intentions to quit using longitudinal techniques which accounted for the contextual effects of workgroups nested within facilities. All previous multi-level or contextual conceptualizations of incivility have involved cross-sectional data. The only study to examine civility, job satisfaction, and turnover intentions longitudinally was Moore et al. (2008), and those authors did not use intention to quit in their analysis, nor did they adjust their models for the multilevel nature of the data. Our approach also extended current research methodologically through consideration of the nested structure of the data and accounting for dependencies which could have led to misleadingly small standard error estimates and biased decision making regarding the significance of path coefficients. The study used archival de-identified data from 160 Veterans Health Administration (VHA) facilities (N ~ 85,000 employees employees, and 5,883 workgroups per year) from 2009-2011. The data had workgroup and facility identifiers, permitting the contextual analyses. The primary aim of the study was to determine the causal impact of civility on job satisfaction and intentions to quit. Given the nested structure of the data, I was also interested in using contextual modeling techniques to account for the clustering of workgroups within facilities. The modeling process resulted in two panel models, one cross-lagged and the other a non-recursive simultaneous influence model where at Times 2 and 3 there were reciprocal effects present. The purpose of the cross-lagged models was to examine the influence of the three variables on one another over a one year lag, whereas the simultaneous influence model was meant to test the possibility that reciprocal contemporary influences coupled with stability paths between the same measures from time i to time i + 1 could account for the observed covariance structure. Findings suggested that within a given year, civility and job satisfaction may be more likely to influence each other equally; but from one year to the next, civility is a stronger driver of job satisfaction than vice versa. With respect to intentions to quit, both models supported the notion that civility is a stronger driver of intentions to quit than the converse.

Book Indian Perspectives on Workplace Bullying

Download or read book Indian Perspectives on Workplace Bullying written by Premilla D'Cruz and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-11-11 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book, recognizing that workplace bullying is a significant employment relations and occupational health and safety problem in India which warrants urgent and holistic intervention, presents empirical studies examining contextual factors, antecedents, mediators, moderators, processes, outcomes and solutions, thereby deepening our understanding of the phenomenon. The chapters showcased in the volume emphasize the paradoxical Indian sociocultural ethos whose simultaneous embrace of humanism versus identity-based, personalized and hierarchical relationships, materialism versus spiritualism and individualism versus collectivism both fuel yet quell misbehaviour. The inquiries which constitute this book engage both positivist and postpostivist paradigms, draw on several theoretical and substantive frameworks, utilize an array of methods, investigate numerous foci and cover various geographical regions in India, a range of industrial sectors and all levels of the organization. In so doing, they make pathbreaking contributions beyond country-specific insights to advance the frontiers of the thematic area worldwide. The chapters include important findings pertaining to digital workplaces, child labour, forgiveness, customer bullying, psychological contract violation, perceived organizational support, psychological capital and comprehensive prevention strategies encompassing psychosocial risks. As well as building on a decade of knowledge about workplace bullying in India, the book puts forward a research agenda on the topic for the subcontinent in particular and the field in general. The volume is of interest to researchers, practitioners and students of organizational studies, human resource management, industrial relations, labour law, corporate law, health sciences and social work.

Book An Evidence Based Synthesis of Civility and Incivility Literature

Download or read book An Evidence Based Synthesis of Civility and Incivility Literature written by Lisette Montalvo and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper, through an evidence based synthesis, explores the civility and incivility literature to create a model to explain civil and uncivil behavior in the workplace. Workplace incivility was first defined by Andersson and Pearson (1999) as a less intense form of deviant behavior with ambiguous intent to harm, whereas civility is defined as an active engagement in creating, protecting, and participating in a community (Paveia, 2007). The civility and incivility model was created using the social ecology and symbolic interactionism theories as a framework to understand the moderators and effects. Incivility is linked to negative personal and organizational effect including employee turnover and a decrease in the employee's physical and psychological health. Civility results in increased productivity and job satisfaction among other positive personal and organizational effects. The model will help leaders understand and address incivility while instilling civil environments in their business work units.
