Book Plant Growth Regulators and Their Effect on Yield of Wheat Triticum Aestivum L in Southern Australia

Download or read book Plant Growth Regulators and Their Effect on Yield of Wheat Triticum Aestivum L in Southern Australia written by Jaron Tomys Bennett and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Plant growth regulators (PGRs) shorten the straw of cereals and have been used commercially to control lodging in regions of high rainfall for many years. PGRs have been shown not only to reduce height, but affect yield formation processes such as dry matter accumulation, distribution and the principle yield components in the absence of lodging. The use of the anti-gibberellin PGRs such as Trinexapac Ethyl (Moddus) and Chlormequat Chloride (Cycocel) have only recently been considered as a means of increasing yield in dryland wheat production systems. However, results have been inconsistent and seem to vary with the type of PGR, rate, growth stage of application, environment and cultivar. The experiments reported here were designed to investigate the potential of PGRs to increase yields in dryland wheat production systems of the southern Australian wheat belt. Moddus and Cycocel (collectively to be referred to as PGRs) were applied in the field, at two locations, Wagga Wagga in the NSW Riverina using the variety EGA Gregory and Swan Hill in the Victorian Northern Mallee using the variety Yitpi. Crops were sprayed with varying rates and combinations of Moddus and/or Cycocel applied at three different crop growth stages, GS 13/15, GS 25/29 and GS 31/31. Measurements of crop height, canopy greenness, lodging, stem non-structured carbohydrates (NSC), dry matter production and yield and its principle components were taken to evaluate the effects of the PGRs."--Abstract.

Book Bioremediation of Salt Affected Soils An Indian Perspective

Download or read book Bioremediation of Salt Affected Soils An Indian Perspective written by Sanjay Arora and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-03-31 with total page 316 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edited volume focuses on the characterization, reclamation, bioremediation, and phytoremediation of salt affected soils and waterlogged sodic soils. Innovative technologies in managing marginal salt affected lands merit immediate attention in the light of climate change and its impact on crop productivity and environment. The decision-making process related to reclamation and management of vast areas of salt affected soils encompasses consideration of economic viability, environmental sustainability, and social acceptability of different approaches. The chapters in this book highlight the significant environmental and social impacts of different ameliorative techniques used to manage salt affected soils. Readers will discover new knowledge on the distribution, reactions, changes in bio-chemical properties and microbial ecology of salt affected soils through case studies exploring Indian soils. The contributions presented by experts shed new light on techniques such as the restoration of degraded lands by growing halophyte plant species, diversification of crops and introduction of microbes for remediation of salt infested soils, and the use of fluorescent pseudomonads for enhancing crop yields.

Book Encyclopedia of Agrophysics

Download or read book Encyclopedia of Agrophysics written by Jan Gliński and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-06-07 with total page 1075 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Encyclopedia of Agrophysics will provide up-to-date information on the physical properties and processes affecting the quality of the environment and plant production. It will be a "first-up" volume which will nicely complement the recently published Encyclopedia of Soil Science, (November 2007) which was published in the same series. In a single authoritative volume a collection of about 250 informative articles and ca 400 glossary terms covering all aspects of agrophysics will be presented. The authors will be renowned specialists in various aspects in agrophysics from a wide variety of countries. Agrophysics is important both for research and practical use not only in agriculture, but also in areas like environmental science, land reclamation, food processing etc. Agrophysics is a relatively new interdisciplinary field closely related to Agrochemistry, Agrobiology, Agroclimatology and Agroecology. Nowadays it has been fully accepted as an agricultural and environmental discipline. As such this Encyclopedia volume will be an indispensable working tool for scientists and practitioners from different disciplines, like agriculture, soil science, geosciences, environmental science, geography, and engineering.

Book Challenges and Opportunities in Agrometeorology

Download or read book Challenges and Opportunities in Agrometeorology written by S.D. Attri and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2011-10-06 with total page 600 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The global food security and sustainable agriculture are the key challenges before the scientific community in the present era of enhanced climate variability, rapidly rising population and dwindling resources. No part of the world is immune from meteorological extremes of one sort or another posing threat to the food security. Agrometeorology has to make most efficient use of the opportunities available in achieving the objectives of enhancing productivity and maintenance of sustainability. Increased awareness and technological advancement have provided opportunities to develop efficient agrometeorological services that can help cope with risks. These include improvements in weather forecasting, better understanding of the monsoon variability and crop-weather relationships, advances in operational agrometeorology and agrometeorological information systems, adaptation strategies to climate change and improved risk evaluation and management. This book based on an International Workshop held in New Delhi, India should be of interest to all organizations and agencies interested in agrometeorological applications.

Book Recent Advances in Grain Crops Research

Download or read book Recent Advances in Grain Crops Research written by Farooq Shah and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2020-02-26 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cultivation of grain crops has been rightly recognized as one of the main drivers in shaping human civilizations. Considering their key role in fulfilling a major portion of the global food needs, grain crops are the most widely grown crops around the world. Unfortunately, like many other agronomic crops, grain crops are quite vulnerable to climate change and this has posed multifaceted threats to agricultural sustainability. To add to the menace, the deteriorating quantity and quality of both land and water as primary factors of production are further aggravating the scenario. Confronting such challenges demands innovative adaptation strategies through intensification of grain crop production that can ensure grain self-sufficiency worldwide.
