Book Effect of Water Film Thickness on Tire Pavement Friction

Download or read book Effect of Water Film Thickness on Tire Pavement Friction written by DW. Harwood and published by . This book was released on 1990 with total page 11 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The results of an extensive experimental investigation of the thin water films of thickness less than 0.38 mm (0.015 in.) on the tire-pavement friction are presented. Both laboratory and full-scale field tests involving new measuring equipment were conducted, and a new device was developed for laboratory measurement of rubber-surface friction. Also, a new apparatus was built to measure thickness of thin water films formed on pavement surfaces. The results from the laboratory and field tests indicate that the tire-pavement friction can decrease significantly at very thin water films from 0.025 to 0.230 mm (0.001 to 0.009 in.). A quantitative measure of the effect of water-film thickness on tire-pavement friction is proposed. The effects of tire, vehicle speed, and pavement texture on pavement wetness sensitivity are also investigated.

This book was released on 2000 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This synthesis report will be of interest to pavement design, construction, management, and research engineers, highway safety officials, and others concerned with pavement friction characteristics. It describes the current state of the practice and discusses the methods used for evaluating wet pavement friction characteristics of new and restored pavements. This synthesis reviews models used for measuring and evaluating friction and texture, causes for friction changes over time, and aggregate and mix design to provide adequate friction. Also presented are construction and surface restoration practices for providing good pavement surface characteristics. In addition, considerations of noise and ride quality are discussed when compromise may be required.

Book Vehicle Tire Road Dynamics

Download or read book Vehicle Tire Road Dynamics written by Tan Li and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2022-11-24 with total page 664 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Vehicle/Tire/Road Dynamics: Handling, Ride, and NVH presents the connection between NVH and conventional vehicle dynamics where both tire and road play a key role. In this book, there is a chapter for handling dynamics that provides an introduction to ride dynamics and a chapter for ride dynamics that provides an introduction to NVH, presenting better coherence and synergy between these major areas of vehicle/tire dynamics. Accompanying the fundamental theories, case studies are given to facilitate comprehension. In addition to the experimental implementations, the state-of-the-art approaches to simulating vehicle/tire dynamics are presented from the viewpoint of both industry and academia. This new book bridges the gap for experts in tire or pavement NVH (also tire-pavement interaction noise) and those who are experts in vehicle dynamics. Conventional vehicle dynamics (e.g., handling/braking/cornering) is focused on low-frequency performance while NVH (noise/vibration/harshness) is focused on high-frequency performance. There is also another area called "ride" (comfort/stability) which focuses on mid-frequency. Presents a closed loop system for vehicle dynamics, covering handling, riden and NVH. Provides insights into how intelligent tires will enhance autonomous vehicle control and optimize multiple performances, especially for electric vehicles. Demonstrates how pavement characteristics could greatly influence vehicle handling/ride/NVH and improve/balance these performances.

Book Assessment of LTPP Friction Data

Download or read book Assessment of LTPP Friction Data written by Leslie Titus-Glover and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "A major goal of the Long-Term Pavement Performance (LTPP) study is the development of recommendations for improving the design and construction of new and rehabilitated pavements to make them longer lasting. As part of the condition monitoring of the LTPP test sections, friction data are being collected on a regular basis at each test site. Friction data collection is the responsibility of the specific highway agency under whose jurisdiction the pavements are located. - The LTPP data collection guidelines for friction data recommend using the ASTM E-274 (AASHTO T242) procedure as the preferred method for obtaining data. The ASTM E-274 procedure uses a locked-wheel skid tester In a trailer assembly. Friction test results are reported as Skid Numbers (SN's). 15. Supplementary Notes This report provides an assessment of the availability, characteristics, and quality of the friction data collected as part of the LTPP study. Also, the availability of related pavement characteristics data was assessed. The report also contains recommendations for adjustments and refinements to current procedures for the collection of friction and related data. The LTPP database provides a one-stop source of reasonably good friction data collected in a systemic manner from a wide range of pavements subjected to a wide range of traffic loading and environmental conditions. The friction data will be of use for analyzing why some pavement surfaces retain good friction characteristics with time and why some surfaces show rapid deterioration in friction over time"--Technical report documentation page.

Book Physically Meaningful Harmonization of Tire Pavement Friction Measurement Devices

Download or read book Physically Meaningful Harmonization of Tire Pavement Friction Measurement Devices written by Madhura Priyanga Nishshanke Rajapakshe and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A set of laboratory tire experiments was designed and performed to validate the physical significance of LuGre tire model parameters and to study how they behave under typical load, inflation pressure, excitation frequency, and amplitude conditions. An empirical method was developed to accommodate the effects of water film thickness on tire/pavement friction in the LuGre model. The results of the sensitivity analysis and the experiments to directly estimate the model parameters were used to identify and quantify appropriate modifications to the measurement mechanisms of PFMDs that can be introduced to improve the comparability of their results. Friction experiments performed after introducing such modifications to the LWST showed an average reduction of 20% in the deviations between the results of LWST and RFT measurements. The research carried out in this dissertation is significant because it: (i) identified the deficiencies in the current method for harmonizing PFMD measurements and the underlying reasons for these deficiencies, (ii) emphasized the importance of a standardization approach that regulates the physical condition of PFMDs, in order to achieve universal comparability of tire/pavement friction measurements, (iii) validated that the LuGre tire model is a tire/pavement friction model capable of facilitating a better standardization approach, and, (iv) initialized the development of a physically meaningful harmonization procedure for PFMDs.

Book An Evaluation of the Effects of Tread Depth Pavement Texture and Water Film Thickness on Skid Number speed Gradients

Download or read book An Evaluation of the Effects of Tread Depth Pavement Texture and Water Film Thickness on Skid Number speed Gradients written by David Crenshaw Mahone and published by . This book was released on 1975 with total page 201 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The raw data and the initial curves for the study entitled, "An Evaluation of the Effects of Tread Depth, Pavement Texture, and Water Film Thickness on Skid Number-Speed Gradients" are so voluminous that they are included in the Supplement rather than in the final report of this study. For economy and convenience, they have been copied from the computer printouts. The individual test values are in Tables 1-33, with the tables having the same numbers as the sites they represent. Graphic representations of the data are given in three figures for each site. The first figure shows the speed gradient curve for each tire and water condition and is designated by the letter S followed by the number of the site it represents; the second shows the effect of tread depth for each speed and water condition and is designated by the letter T followed by the number of the site; and the third shows the effect of water film for each speed and tire condition and is designated by the letter W followed by the number of the site. Because sites 14 and 15 were tested for only two tire conditions and one water condition, they are not included in the graphic form.

Book Performance Characteristics of Open graded Friction Courses

Download or read book Performance Characteristics of Open graded Friction Courses written by Harry A. Smith and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 1992 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This synthesis will be of interest to construction, maintenance, pavement design, and materials engineers, pavement contractors, and others interested in the use of open-graded friction courses (OGFC) as an asphalt concrete pavement wearing surface. Information is provided on performance benefits and limitations of OGFC, material and mixture properties, and current construction practices in use in the United States and Europe. Advances in mixture design and construction techniques have overcome several of the performance limitations identified in early applications of OGFC, as well as enhanced the performance benefits associated with OGFC use. This report of the Transportation Research Board describes the current state of the practice with respect to the use of OGFC. Experience with the design, construction, and performance of OGFC is summarized, based on a review of the literature, documentation of experience from applications in the U.S. and Europe, and site visits to several states.
