Book excerpt: The process of learning and relearning how to complete tasks of daily living can be challenging, lengthy, and frustrating for persons with traumatic brain injuries. The purpose of the study was to examine the effectiveness of video self-modeling and feedback to teach stovetop food preparation to individuals with traumatic brain injuries. Four individuals with traumatic brain injuries residing at a post-acute rehabilitation facility for persons with traumatic brain injuries and spinal cord injuries participated in the study. A multiple probe design across participants was used. Each participant participated in a baseline, which consisted of the researcher asking the participant to complete a stovetop food preparation. A self-modeled video was then created in which the participant demonstrated the stovetop food preparation. Following the creation of the video, the baseline period was re-implemented with each participant completing the task of stovetop food preparation without viewing the self-modeled. The treatment portion of the study consisted of each participant viewing the tape of the self-modeled act of stovetop food preparation, performing the stovetop cooking task, and receiving feedback. If a participant showed no improvement in the initial phase of the intervention, a second phase of intervention was implemented, in which the self-modeled video was edited to address unique problem areas. Praise and corrective feedback identical to that provided in phase one were also provided during the second phase of intervention. If a participant showed no improvement in the second intervention phase, the third and final intervention phase was implemented. During the third phase of intervention, the participant was provided with a copy of the task analysis as a permanent prompt. The participant viewed the video utilized in the second phase and then referred to the permanent prompt while performing the task. As in phase two, praise and corrective feedback were provided during the third phase of intervention. After the participant met the acquisition criterion, post-test probes identical to those conducted in both baseline periods were conducted. Generalization probes of novel food items were conducted with the participant during the first baseline, post test, and maintenance phases. Maintenance probes were conducted on the participant two and four weeks after completion of the post-test probes. Results of the study indicated that video self-modeling and feedback were effective in teaching stovetop cooking skills to three of the four study participants. These results were maintained for three participants during post testing, generalization, and follow-up probes. The implications of the findings of the study were discussed, as well as the limitations of the study. Recommendations were provided for future research.

Book excerpt: According to the Brain Injury Association of America (2020), more than 3.5 million experience acquired brain injuries (ABI) every year in the United States. With improving medical treatment, more individuals are surviving ABI; however, many rehabilitation facilities focus on the physical abilities of the individual rather than regaining independence in daily living skills. Video models have been used with success to teach daily living skills to individuals with developmental and intellectual disabilities, however, little research exists on the use of different types of video models to teach those skills to individuals with traumatic brain injury. The purpose of the present study is to assess the effects of video prompting in completion of activities of daily living (ADLs) to individuals with traumatic brain injury. This study used a multiple baseline across tasks with probes design. The primary researcher created video prompts for four ADLs for the participant to view. The participant viewed the video prompt for each step or set of steps in a task analysis for the ADL and attempted to complete the step. No feedback was provided to the participant during completion of the ADL. Data was collected remotely using a task analysis and videotapes of the participant completing the task.

Today's average student has low self-efficacy for cooking meals in the home and thus, is highly dependent on convenience-type food items. A valuable technique for improving cooking skill in individuals is through the use of video technology to teach cooking. Undergraduate students are likely Millennials, and prefer to use technology for learning purposes. The objective of this study was to test the effect of video technology on cooking self-efficacy in undergraduate college students living off-campus at a public Midwestern University. Two groups of undergraduate college students (n=71) were assessed for baseline self-efficacy for cooking skill and number of meals cooked per week using an online survey. One group received five weeks of a recipe card and survey assessing self-efficacy for cooking the meal and barriers to cooking in the home. The second group received five weeks of a recipe card and accompanying cooking video in addition to a survey assessing the same parameters. Participants were surveyed at the end of the study to assess changes in cooking self-efficacy, number of meals cooker per week, and differences between groups. There were significantly statistical improvements from pretest to posttest cooking self-efficacy scores for participants but no statistical difference between pretest and posttest number of meals cooked per week (p=.345). There were no statistical differences between intervention groups (p>.05). Conclusions of the study found students reported confidence in cooking skill, but lacked time and equipment associated with cooking healthy meals. Overall, the use of video technology was effective at improving self-efficacy for cooking if: 1) Meals are simple, short, and specific. 2) Recipe videos are short to maintain viewer attention.

Unemployment of adults with intellectual disabilities is a complex multidimensional issue. Some barriers to employment of individuals with intellectual disabilities are the lack of job experience and skills training. In recent years, video-based interventions, such as video self-modeling (VSM) and video modeling, have been receiving substantial attention as viable methods to teach skills to individuals with intellectual disabilities. Initial empirical evaluations have demonstrated that VSM and video modeling, when used in combination with in-vivo instructional strategies, are effective methods to teach chained task to individuals with intellectual disabilities. However, few studies have investigated the effectiveness of VSM or video modeling as stand-alone interventions, without the addition of in-vivo instructional strategies, for teaching chained tasks. While research utilizing video-based interventions to teach independent daily living skills is gaining momentum, the use of video-based interventions in the area of job skills training is still lacking. This study investigated the effectiveness of VSM to teach chained job tasks to individuals with intellectual disabilities in employment settings. The purposes of this study were to (a) evaluate the effectiveness of VSM to teach chained job tasks to individuals with intellectual disabilities, (b) explore the effectiveness and feasibility of VSM alone or in combination with feedback and practice, and (c) evaluate the social validity of VSM in employment settings. Particularly in this study, the VSM intervention (i.e., VSM alone or in combination with feedback and practice) did not include an in-vivo instructional component in order to evaluate if the VSM intervention can lead to generalization of the job tasks to the actual job setting. Three adults with intellectual disabilities participated in this study. A within participant multiple probe design across targeted job tasks, replicated across the three participants, was used to evaluate the effectiveness of VSM in this study. All of the participants demonstrated increased task acquisition with the VSM intervention; however, the effectiveness of VSM alone, or in combination with feedback and practice, varied across participants and job tasks. In terms of social validity, the participants, their job coaches, and the supervisors of the supported employment program, reported overall positive perceptions of the videotaping procedure and VSM intervention. Limitations of the study and implications for future research are discussed.

Book excerpt: Video self-modeling has been proven to be an effective intervention for individuals with a variety of disabilities and behavioral issues. Very few studies have addressed the impact of video modeling on behaviors that are displayed by groups of students and no studies have tackled the issue of group behaviors with video self-modeling as an intervention. This study focused on analyzing the effects of video self-modeling on students in an elementary classroom in order to increase the speed at which the students lined up and transitioned. Further, the study addressed the question of whether the intervention had a differential impact on students who exhibited varying speeds of transitioning, by grouping them into fast, medium or slow groups determined during baseline. The study employed a single-subject research design but employed groups, rather than individuals as the subjects. The results revealed that the entire class showed immediate and significant gains in the speed at which they lined up and transitioned. The results also showed that both the medium and slow groups gained enough speed by using this intervention that the groups transitioned and lined up with similar speeds as the fast group. Implications of this study showed that group video self-modeling may be an intervention that can be used to positively influence global behavior change in the regular education classroom. This intervention may be a valuable asset for educators to improve classroom management by efficiently improving student behavior, and may assist them to increase the fidelity of student responses when teaching positive classroom behaviors to students.

Individuals with low hope levels are more likely to have difficulties across their physical, psychological, and social environments. Even though the concept of hope and interventions to improve it had been developed since the mid 1990's, there has been very little if any research that has developed video self modelling (VSM) intervention specifically designed to change hope within individuals. This study involved five undergraduate students who showed low levels of hope in standardised tests. Hope scales include hope in general (Hope Scale) and hope in six specific domains including family, romantic, social, academic, work, and leisure (Domain Specific Hope Scale). An activity was chosen by the participants and related to the domains, for example, exercise (leisure domain), reading a book (academic domain), or other activities or skills. The intervention was the construction of a video-recording showing the participants successfully carrying out their target activities which they watched every day for a week. The findings of this study supported the probability that VSM may generate an indirect effect on the enhancement of hope. All participants showed increases in the frequency of their chosen activities and improvements in most of the related hope scores. Therefore, VSM may be an appropriate intervention to help those with low hope to achieve their goals and improve their hopefulness.
