Book excerpt: An experimental investigation was conducted to determine the mechanical properties and microstructural characteristics resulting from thermomechanical processing by warm rolling of an AL-8.0%Mg-0.5%Zr Alloy and an AL-8.0%Mg-1.0%Li-0.15%Zr Alloy. At ambient temperature, yield strengths were 38 to 44 Ksi (262-303 MPa), ultimate tensile strengths were 60 to 65 Ksi (414-45OMPa), with 10-12% elongation to fracture. Both alloys were moderately superplastic at 300C; an elongation of 340% was attained with the 1.0%Li alloy. Behavior of the alloy is consistent with continuous recrystallization during annealing and deformation at warm temperatures, and is very similar to that of previously studied AL-Mg-X alloys.

Billets were machined from these castings and upset forged at .9% of either the solvus or eutectic temperature, as appropriate, to a true strain of 1.5. These alloys were then evaluated by compressive stress-strain testing at various temperatures and strain rates to determine both the ambient and elevated temperature characteristics.

The addition of Mg is expected to increase the strength while maintaining light weight. This thesis aims to develop a better understanding of the thermomechanical characteristics of Al-Mg alloys when Mg is added to higher levels.Eco-Al-Mg alloys containing 4 wt.% to 9 wt.% Mg were hot compressed under various parameters. The flow curves and microstructures were determined to study the effect of Mg content and deformation parameters. The increase in Mg promoted solid solution strengthening and facilitated dynamic softening; the deformation regimes with high temperature and low strain rate resulted in low peak stress and accelerated dynamic softening process. Yield point phenomena and an absence of work hardening were observed in the flow curves, and possible mechanisms based on Cottrell atmosphere and grain boundary sliding are proposed to explain these results"--
