Book Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of Structural Metals and Alloys

Download or read book Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of Structural Metals and Alloys written by Andrey Belyakov and published by MDPI. This book was released on 2019-06-24 with total page 272 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The papers collected in this special issue clearly reflect the modern research trends in materials science. These fields of specific attention are high-Mn TWIP steels, high-Cr heat resistant steels, aluminum alloys, ultrafine grained materials including those developed by severe plastic deformation, and high-entropy alloys. The major portion of the collected papers is focused on the mechanisms of microstructure evolution and the mechanical properties of metallic materials subjected to various thermo-mechanical, deformation or heat treatments. Another large portion of the studies is aimed on the elaboration of alloying design of advanced steels and alloys. The changes in phase content, transformation and particle precipitation and their effect on the properties are also broadly presented in this collection, including the microstructure/property changes caused by irradiation.

Book Welding High strength Steels

Download or read book Welding High strength Steels written by P. A. Kammer and published by . This book was released on 1966 with total page 68 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent studies of the developments in welding steels with yield strengths greater than 150 ksi have included low-alloy martensitic steels, medium-alloy martensitic steels, nickel maraging steels, and bainitic steels. Only weldments from medium-alloy martensitic steels and nickel maraging steels have mechanical properties approaching those of the base plate without a complete postweld heat treatment. The most serious problem with the other steel is low toughness in the weld fusion zone. Adequate weld metal toughness under conditions of elastic strain can be obtarined over the entire 150 to 225 ksi yield-strength range only if the tungsten-arc welding process is used. Processes with higher deposition rates can produce comparable weld deposits only in the lower portion of the range. Above a yield strength of 200 ksi, 18Ni maraging steel weldments have the best combination of strength and toughness. Below 200 ksi, the HP 9-4-25 medium-alloy martensitic steel and 12Ni maraging steel weldments have nearly equal properties.

Book Control of Microstructures and Properties in Steel Arc Welds

Download or read book Control of Microstructures and Properties in Steel Arc Welds written by Lars-Erik Svensson and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-09-20 with total page 256 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Control of Microstructures and Properties in Steel Arc Welds provides an overview of the most recent developments in welding metallurgy. Topics discussed include common welding processes, the thermal cycle during welding, defects that may occur during the welding process, the metallurgy of the material, metallurgical processes in the heat-affected zone and the fused metal, and the relationship between microstructures and mechanical properties. The book's final chapter presents examples of welded joints, illustrating how modern theories are capable of predicting the microstructure and properties of these joints. This book is an excellent resource for welding engineers, metallurgists, materials scientists, and others interested in the subject.

Book Effect of Welding Processes on the Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of Duplex Stainless Steel Weld Joints

Download or read book Effect of Welding Processes on the Microstructure and Mechanical Properties of Duplex Stainless Steel Weld Joints written by Nanda Naik Korra and published by . This book was released on 2018 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of the present investigation involves studying the microstructure and mechanical properties of duplex stainless steel (DSS) alloy 2205 and super DSS (SDSS) alloy 2507 weld joints fabricated by tungsten inert gas (TIG) welding and its variant, activated TIG (A-TIG) welding. Square butt weld joints were fabricated from 10-mm-thick plates of DSS and SDSS using single pass A-TIG and multi-pass TIG welding processes. The filler wire ER2209 was used for multi-pass TIG welding of DSS 2205, and ER2594 filler wire was used for multi-pass TIG welding of SDSS 2507. The microstructure in the A-TIG weld metals was found to be coarser, which was caused by high peak temperatures during A-TIG welding. The microstructures exhibited different forms of austenite, including grain boundary allotriomorphs, Widmansttten side plates, and intragranular precipitates in the weld metal. In the A-TIG weld metals, the microstructure exhibited a balanced ferrite-to-austenite ratio. The hardness values of multi-pass TIG weld joints were higher compared to A-TIG weld joints. The tensile and yield strengths of multi-pass TIG weld joints were higher compared to A-TIG weld joints, which was mainly due to higher delta ferrite content and finer microstructure. The toughness values obtained by Charpy impact testing were higher in A-TIG weld joints compared with multi-pass TIG weld joints at room temperature, which was mainly due to the balanced ferrite-to-austenite ratio in the weld microstructure. However, at subzero temperatures, the A-TIG weld joints exhibit lower impact toughness because of their coarser weld metal structure.

Book Evaluation of Heat Affected Zone and Weld Metal Toughness in Selected Steels Phase II

Download or read book Evaluation of Heat Affected Zone and Weld Metal Toughness in Selected Steels Phase II written by and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume I reports on an assessment of a series of submerged arc welds prepared using 2 different wire-flux combinations giving weld metals alloyed with Ti-B, and Mo respectively and using different procedural variables such as heat input, post weld heat treatment, interpass temperature and joint restraint. Volume 2 explains the CVN and CTOD toughness of 4 gas metal arc welds prepared using Argon-5% carbon dioxide shielding gas and 3 consumable wires giving weld deposits alloyed with Mn-Mo, Mn-Si, and Ti-B respectively. All welds were made at 3.0 kJ/mm heat input, and the one with Ti-B weld metal was examined in the stress relieved condition also. The welds were examined for composition, strength, microstructure and inclusion distributions. Volume 3 examines a series of 14 welded assemblies prepared using the gas shielded flux cored arc welding process to examine the effect of welding procedural variables on weld metal toughness. All the welds were made using one of 3 different commercially available consumables and the Ar-25% CO2 gas shielding. Procedural variables studied included heat input, post weld heat treatment, and welding position lateral joint restraint. Their influence was assessed by microstructure characterization, deposit composition, CVN and CTOD toughness.

Book The Effect of Welding Process on the Microstructure of HY 130 Steel Weldments

Download or read book The Effect of Welding Process on the Microstructure of HY 130 Steel Weldments written by Teresa M. McNutt and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 76 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: HY-130 is a high-strength, low-carbon steel used in the quenched an d tempered condition. It is designed for high performance and marine applications where good weldability is a requirement. Optimum welding parameters are currently under investigation. In this study, 1/2 inch (12.7 mm) HY-130 steel weldments produced by submerged arc welding (SAW) and gas metal arc welding (GMAW) processes are compared by means of a systematic microstructural characterization of the base metal, weld metal, and heat affected zone (HAZ). The microstructures are characterized by optical and electron microscopy and microhardness measurements are performed in the weld metal and across the HAZ to relate the microstructure with the microhardness profiles. The weld metal microstructure of both weldments showed a predominantly martensitic structure. The GMAW weld metal had a finer lath martensite structure and contained more retained austenite and twinned martensite. The SAW weld metal had a less defined lath structure which was more bainitic. The microhardness values were higher in the GMAW weld metal. No significant differences in microstructure and hardness were observed in the HAZ of the two weldments. (jes).
