Book Mini lessons for Literature Circles

Download or read book Mini lessons for Literature Circles written by Harvey Daniels and published by Heinemann Educational Books. This book was released on 2004 with total page 308 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Harvey Daniels' Literature Circles introduced tens of thousands of teachers to the power of student-led book discussions. Nancy Steineke's Reading and Writing Together showed how a teacher can nurture friendship and collaboration among young readers. Now, Daniels and Steineke team up to focus on one crucial element of the Literature Circle model; the short, teacher-directed lessons that begin, guide and follow-up every successful book club meeting. Mini-lessons are the secret to book clubs that click. Each of these forty-five short, focused, and practical lessons includes Nancy and Harvey's actual classroom language and is formatted to help busy teachers with point-by-point answers to the questions they most frequently ask. How can I: steer my students toward deeper comprehension? get kids interested in each others' ideas? make sure kids choose just-right books? help students schedule their reading and meeting time? deal with kids who don't do the reading? get kids to pay more attention to literary style and structure? help special education and ELL students to participate actively in book clubs? get kids to expand their repertoire of reading strategies? make sure groups are on-task when I'm not looking over their shoulder? introduce writing tools (including role sheets) that support student discussion'. help shy or dominating members get the right amount of "airtime?" give grades for book clubs without ruining the fun? use scientific research to justify the classroom time I spend on literature circles? Each mini-lesson spells out everything from the time and materials needed to word-by-word instructions for students. The authors even warn "what could go wrong," helping teachers to avoid predictable management problems. With abundant student examples, reproducible forms, photographs of kids in action, and recommended reading lists, Mini-lessons for Literature Circles helps you deepen student book discussions, create lifelong readers, and build a respectful classroom community.

Book Handbook of Research on Cultivating Literacy in Diverse and Multilingual Classrooms

Download or read book Handbook of Research on Cultivating Literacy in Diverse and Multilingual Classrooms written by Neokleous, Georgios and published by IGI Global. This book was released on 2020-03-27 with total page 767 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Literacy has traditionally been associated with the linguistic and functional ability to read and write. Although literacy, as a fundamental issue in education, has received abundant attention in the last few decades, most publications to date have focused on monolingual classrooms. Language teacher educators have a responsibility to prepare teachers to be culturally responsive and flexible so they can adapt to the range of settings and variety of learners they will encounter in their careers while also bravely questioning the assumptions they are encountering about multilingual literacy development and instruction. The Handbook of Research on Cultivating Literacy in Diverse and Multilingual Classrooms is an essential scholarly publication that explores the multifaceted nature of literacy development across the lifespan in a range of multilingual contexts. Recognizing that literacy instruction in contemporary language classrooms serving diverse student populations must go beyond developing reading and writing abilities, this book sets out to explore a wide range of literacy dimensions. It offers unique perspectives through a critical reflection on issues related to power, ownership, identity, and the social construction of literacy in multilingual societies. As a resource for use in language teacher preparation programs globally, this book will provide a range of theoretical and practical perspectives while creating space for pre- and in-service teachers to grapple with the ideas in light of their respective contexts. The book will also provide valuable insights to instructional designers, curriculum developers, linguists, professionals, academicians, administrators, researchers, and students.

Book The Effects of Literature Circles on the Reading Achievement of College Reading Students

Download or read book The Effects of Literature Circles on the Reading Achievement of College Reading Students written by Davonna M. Thomas and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to examine the effects of literature circles on the reading achievement of college reading students using a mixed method approach. A literature circle is defined in this study as students who form a group, read a novel, and meet on a regular basis to discuss what they have read. The researcher-developed intervention included three activities: collaborative oral re-tell, short written response to a prompt, and open discussion. The study employed an experimental design in order to examine the effectiveness of the intervention (literature circles); in addition, the sociocultural context of the college reading classes (and students) is described in detail. Grounded theory was employed to analyze reading attitude, reading motivation, response to participation in a literature circle, and textual engagement. Thirty-eight college students in required reading courses participated in the five-week study. Students were randomly assigned to either the treatment (participation in literature circle) or control (independent reading) condition. Students were able to choose from four pre-selected high-interest young adult novels. At the conclusion of the series of literature circle meetings (or upon completion of reading the novel independently, for control group participants), comprehension was measured using three measures: an oral re-tell of the novel, a twenty question researcher-developed open-ended book-specific assessment, and a twenty question assessment on a two-part high school level passage from the Qualitative Reading Inventory (Leslie & Caldwell, 2011). Textual engagement was measured by coding and counting responses to a semi-structured interview. Multivariate analysis of variance (MANOVA) revealed a significant main effect for group assignment, meaning that—when all four measures were combined into a linear function—the students assigned to literature circles outperformed the control group students. Given the significance of the overall test, the univariate main effects were examined. Significant univariate main effects were obtained for the researcher developed test and textual engagement. Qualitative analysis revealed that literature circles improve reading comprehension, depth of textual engagement, and provides an opportunity for discourse, collaboration, and social interaction for its participants. These findings suggest that literature circles lead to both improved comprehension and deeper textual engagement for college reading students. Keywords: literature circles/book club/literature discussion, reading comprehension, textual engagement, reader response, post-secondary/college/university, developmental studies, mixed method; experimental design; grounded theory.

Book A Study Investigating the Effect of Literature Circles on Reading Strategy Use in the Fifth Grade

Download or read book A Study Investigating the Effect of Literature Circles on Reading Strategy Use in the Fifth Grade written by and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Author's abstract: "The purpose of this study was to investigate whether literature circles increased student use of reading strategies as compared to teacher-led instruction. Students in the experimental group participated in literature circles, as students in the control group received teacher-led instruction for a nine-week period. Experimental and control samples completed a pre and post survey indicating the frequency in which they used five strategies utilized by proficient readers. A two sample, one tail t test for independent samples was used on all five reading strategies for data analysis of the post surveys. Analysis of the data indicated no significant effects of literature circles on reading strategy use as compared to teacher-led instruction. Therefore, the researcher did not reject the null hypotheses for each reading strategy.

Book The Effect of Student Sharing on Reading Comprehension

Download or read book The Effect of Student Sharing on Reading Comprehension written by Darcy Thompson and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 44 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the elements of effective literacy instruction is to provide the opportunity for every child to talk with peers about reading (Allington & Gabriel 2012). Book clubs and literature circles have become very popular for students as well as adults. The sharing of literature offers social opportunities that many readers enjoy. Third grade readers are typically transitioning in their reading from early reading, which involves implementing decoding skills, to reading with fluency and a confidence in understanding how text works. They are reading with automaticity and at a good pace, while developing strategies to figure out most words. The increase in the ability to read with fluency allows transitional readers to move toward comprehending increasingly more difficult text. As a third grade teacher I questioned how an increase in the amount of time spent sharing about what students are reading would affect reading comprehension in third grade readers. This study explores the effect of a structured time for transitioning third grade readers to share about what they have read on the growth in their reading comprehension skills. The targeted students in this study are those in my third grade classroom who are performing at the benchmark reading level, as defined by the Lead 21 curriculum. At the conclusion of the eight-week period, which incorporated daily reading and having book talks as part of the language arts block, the results showed that the targeted benchmark readers had a combined growth in reading scores of 11.3%. At the conclusion of the study I believe that the time third grade benchmark reading students spent sharing about what they are reading was valid use of instructional time that helped improve reading comprehension.

Book Literature Circles Encircling Reading Comprehension

Download or read book Literature Circles Encircling Reading Comprehension written by Sabrina Balkind and published by . This book was released on 2009 with total page 85 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Research question: How does learning and demonstrating literature circle roles (Summarizer, Connector, Questioner, Word Wizard, and Illustrator) develop students' ability to summarize as a reading comprehension strategy? Sub questions: (1) Will developing students' ability to summarize, increase their ability to comprehend what they read? (2) How effective will Literature Circles be in building students' enjoyment of reading? Context: The intervention took place in a fourth grade self-contained classroom at Sunflower Elementary. The class consists of 5 female and 7 male students with varied abilities in reading comprehension. This research focused on 6 students: two performing below average in reading comprehension, two who are performing at and average level, and two who are performing above average in reading comprehension. The intervention took place over a period of 6 weeks. The purpose of this intervention was to determine whether students learning and demonstrating literature circle roles would develop students' ability to summarize, and by building students' ability to summarize also raise their level of reading comprehension. Another objective of this study was to determine whether or not participating in literature groups would build students' enjoyment of reading. Instructional Approach and Data Collection. Summarizing was explicitly taught and modeled for the students during the pre-intervention phase, and students continued to write short story summaries throughout the intervention. Students then took a preliminary Reading Attitudinal Survey and were split into literature circle groups based on their first or second choice of three books. Students participated within literature circles by completing the jobs of: Summarizer, Connector, Questioner, Word Wizard and Illustrator. Literature groups lasted for five weeks; the last week consisted of students presenting their books to the class through skits of scenes from their books. During the sixth week students took a post Reading Attitudinal Survey as well as a survey to convey how they felt about literature groups and writing summaries. Students also completed weekly reading comprehension tests, which were a part of the A Beka Book Reading program that our school has adopted to determine their growth in reading comprehension. Observational data was taken throughout the intervention to determine fluctuations in students' attitude toward reading and how successful they were in their jobs during their literature circle groups. Findings and Conclusions: The study concluded that learning and demonstrating literature circle roles or jobs may improve students' ability to summarize as a reading comprehension strategy. The study also suggests that learning to be more proficient at summarizing may cause students reading comprehension to improve. Furthermore, this study suggests that participating in literature circle groups contributes to an increase in students' enjoyment and enthusiasm of reading. Grade Level: Fourth Grade. Data Collection Methods: Short story summaries, surveys, literature group assignments, Comprehension tests, Observation. Curriculum Areas: English Language Arts, Reading. Instructional Approaches: Literature Circles, Writing summaries.
