They present data on the factors controlling flower induction and how they may be affected by climate and chemical treatments. For each plant, specific information is provided on all aspects of flower development, including sex expression, requirements for flowering initiation and development, photoperiod, light density, vernalization, and other temperature effects and interactions. Individual species are described from the standpoint of juvenility and maturation, morphology, induction and morphogenesis to anthesis. All information is presented alphabetically for easy reference

Book Onions and Allied Crops

Download or read book Onions and Allied Crops written by James L. Brewster and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-07-30 with total page 902 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Originally published in 1990, Onions and Allied Crops, is a comprehensive account of the edible allium, examined across three volumes. The collection examines the major economic and dietary importance of edible alliums in most countries, and brings together contributions from experts across multiple disciplines, including food scientists, economists, agriculturalists and biochemists. These books address selection and breeding of locally adapted cultivars and the development of cultural techniques, allowing for cultivation across the tropics, to the sub-arctic regions. As such the collection examines the allium as a major agricultural asset and the impact this has had on many economies. These volumes will be of use and of interest to food scientists, economists, agriculturalists and biochemists alike.

Book Fungal infestation of onion bulbs during storage in sack and on its antioxidant properties

Download or read book Fungal infestation of onion bulbs during storage in sack and on its antioxidant properties written by Bamidele Ijigbade and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2023-01-13 with total page 38 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Academic Paper from the year 2022 in the subject Biology - Micro- and Molecular Biology, grade: 4.27, , language: English, abstract: The aim of this study is to determine fungal infestation of onion bulbs during storage in sack and on its antioxidant properties. The fungal infestation of onion bulbs during storage in sack shows that five fungi each were isolated from the onion bulbs during storage in sack at day zero and day seven respectively while at day fourteen, six fungal infestations were isolated from the onion bulbs during storage in sack. A total of sixteen fungi infested the onion bulbs during storage in sack. The fungi belong to four genera and six species of fungi infested the onion bulbs during storage in sack. Aspersillus niger and Aspersillus flavus were the most frequently isolated fungi with 31.25% each followed by Fusarium oxysporum and Aspergillus fumigatus with 12.50% each while Penicillium chrysogenum and Rhizopus stolonifer recorded 6.25% each. The antioxidant analysis of onion extract after storage in sack for 14 days recorded at all concentrations, show that the antioxidant property of the onion extract at day zero and day 7 was higher than that of 14. The inhibition of free radical DPPH at day zero and 7 were 29.92 %, 49.21%, 69.29%, 70.07% and 47.63% while at day 14, the percentage (%) of inhibition of free radical DPPH were 29.33 %, 49.02%, 69.01%, 69.77% and 47.21%. Healthy, undamaged onion bulbs which have been dried in the field should be stored in dry, well ventilated stores. This will reduce growth and development of fungal pathogens and minimize storage rots. Therefore, A. cepa and its constituents could be of therapeutic value in disorders such as aging, anti-inflammatory, and wound healing processes where radical scavenging activity can be of therapeutic value.

Book Effect of Storage Bulb Size Spacing and Time of Planting on Production of Onion Seed Classic Reprint

Download or read book Effect of Storage Bulb Size Spacing and Time of Planting on Production of Onion Seed Classic Reprint written by Henry Albert Jones and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-19 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Effect of Storage, Bulb Size, Spacing, and Time of Planting on Production of Onion Seed The best temperature at which to store mother bulbs of a highly non bolting strain of Ebenezer was about 535 F. Plants from bulbs stored at this temperature bloomed and ripened their seed earlier, produced more seed stems and yielded more seed per acre than plants from mother bulbs stored at higher or lower temperatures. In a comparison of eight different Sizes of mother bulbs of the Yellow Globe Danvers variety ranging in weight from about 15 to 90 grams, there was found to be an increase in number of seed heads per plant, in seed yield per plant, and in seed yield per acre with each increase in Size of bulb. In spacing tests with the Yellow Globe Danvers variety, bulbs were set 3, 4, 6, 8, and 12 inches apart in a row. A significant increase in seed yield per plant was secured with each increase in spacing but a decrease in yield of seed per acre. When bulbs of Yellow Globe Danvers were planted at different dates throughout the winter there was a delay in time of seed maturity of the late-planted bulbs; and, accompanying this, a decrease in yield of seed.
