Book Effect of Irradiation on Elastic Plastic Toughness of Pressure Vessel Steels

Download or read book Effect of Irradiation on Elastic Plastic Toughness of Pressure Vessel Steels written by P. Soulat and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Irradiation experiments were conducted in order to determine the effect of radiation damage on the elastic-plastic ductile fracture toughness of pressure vessel steels. Curves for the J-integral versus crack growth resistance (?a) were established on specimens taken out of two nuclear reactor pressure vessel steels before and after neutron irradiation at 290°C to a fluence of 3.1019 n/cm2 (work function energy E > 1 MeV). The J-?a tests were performed at room temperature (25°C) and service temperature (290°C). The main results obtained are as follows:.

Book Effect of Irradiation on the Elasto Plastic Toughness of Pressure Vessel Steels

Download or read book Effect of Irradiation on the Elasto Plastic Toughness of Pressure Vessel Steels written by P. Petrequin and published by . This book was released on 1986 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A study on the effect of irradiation on the toughness of pressure vessel materials in the ductile regime has been undertaken. Compact tension (CT) specimens of two pressure vessel steels (A533 B and A508 Class 3) and a weld material of fitting chemical composition were irradiated and received neutron fluences of 3 and 8 x 1019 n/cm2. The J-R curves of these materials were determined between 100 and 290°C. Only a very small influence of irradiation was observed for tests at 290°C. In irradiated condition, the effect of the test temperature is not noticeable. At lower temperature, but in the ductile regime, the weld material appears to be more sensitive to neutron irradiation than the two steels. The forged material exhibited a surprisingly high shift of transition temperature since cleavage rupture occurred up to 100°C.

Book Irradiation Effects in Low alloy Reactor Pressure Vessel Steels Heavy Section Steel Technology Program Series 4 and 5

Download or read book Irradiation Effects in Low alloy Reactor Pressure Vessel Steels Heavy Section Steel Technology Program Series 4 and 5 written by and published by . This book was released on 1985 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report presents studies on the irradiation effects in low-alloy reactor pressure vessel steels. The Fourth Heavy-Section Steel Technology (HSST) Irradiation Series, almost completed, was aimed at elastic-plastic and fully plastic fracture toughness of low-copper weldments (''current practice welds''). A typical nuclear pressure vessel plate steel was included for statistical purposes. The Fifth HSST Irradiation Series, now in progress, is aimed at determining the shape of the K/sub IR/ curve after significant radiation-induced shift of the transition temperatures. This series includes irradiated test specimens of thicknesses up to 100 mm and weldment compositions typical of early nuclear power reactor pressure vessel welds. 27 refs., 22 figs. (JDB).

Book Evaluation of Irradiation Embrittlement of 21 4Cr 1Mo Steel in Terms of Elastic Plastic Fracture Toughness

Download or read book Evaluation of Irradiation Embrittlement of 21 4Cr 1Mo Steel in Terms of Elastic Plastic Fracture Toughness written by K. Fukaya and published by . This book was released on 1992 with total page 17 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neutron irradiation embrittlement of 21⁄4Cr-1Mo steels for the pressure vessel material of the high temperature engineering test reactor (HTTR) is evaluated in terms of elastic-plastic fracture toughness, and the effects of neutron irradiation on thermal aging embrittlement is discussed. Plate materials including weld joints and forged materials were irradiated at temperatures of 290, 350, and 400°C up to a fluence of 4 % 1023 n/m2 (E > 1 MeV). Fracture toughness testing using disk-shaped compact tension specimens was conducted in the upper shelf region. Results show that fracture toughness degradation caused by 400°C irradiation has a different character than that imposed by irradiation at lower temperatures. The cause is explained in terms of irradiation-enhanced thermal aging embrittlement.

Book Reactor Pressure Vessel Structural Integrity Research

Download or read book Reactor Pressure Vessel Structural Integrity Research written by and published by . This book was released on 1995 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Development continues on the technology used to assess the safety of irradiation-embrittled nuclear reactor pressure vessels (RPVs) containing flaws. Fracture mechanics tests on RPV steel, coupled with detailed elastic-plastic finite-element analyses of the crack-tip stress fields, have shown that (1) constraint relaxation at the crack tip of shallows surface flaws results in increased data scatter but no increase in the lower-bound fracture toughness, (2) the nil ductility temperature (NDT) performs better than the reference temperature for nil ductility transition (RT{sub NDT}) as a normalizing parameter for shallow-flaw fracture toughness data, (3) biaxial loading can reduce the shallow-flaw fracture toughness, (4) stress-based dual-parameter fracture toughness correlations cannot predict the effect of biaxial loading on a shallow-flaw fracture toughness because in-plane stresses at the crack tip are not influenced by biaxial loading, and (5) an implicit strain-based dual-parameter fracture toughness correlation can predict the effect of biaxial loading on shallow-flaw fracture toughness. Experimental irradiation investigations have shown that (1) the irradiation-induced shift in Charpy V-notch vs temperature behavior may not be adequate to conservatively assess fracture toughness shifts due to embrittlement, and (2) the wide global variations of initial chemistry and fracture properties of a nominally uniform material within a pressure vessel may confound accurate integrity assessments that require baseline properties.
