Book Acidity Factors Limiting Nodulation Nitrogen Fixation and Growth of PHaseolus Vulgaris L

Download or read book Acidity Factors Limiting Nodulation Nitrogen Fixation and Growth of PHaseolus Vulgaris L written by Avílio Antonio Franco and published by . This book was released on 1981 with total page 310 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) is extensively grown in tropical regions, mostly in developing countries without use of N-fertilizer. However, root nodulation and N2-fixation has been found variable under acidic conditions, when soil is used as growth medium. Conditions and techniques for achieving good nodulation of bean in continuous aerated solution culture were developed. The effects of pH on uptake and distribution of Mo in bean were studied in greenhouse and growth chamber experiments in soil and solution culture. The effects of pH and Al on nodule initiation and growth, nitrogen fixation (C2H2-reduction) and shoot and root growth were studied in solution and san culture. Growth and nitrogenase activity of nodule and plant growth in solution culture were atleast as good as in gravel. However, nodule initiation was restricted to plants inoculated before or imediately after transfer of seedlings to solution and was restricted to the roots already present before transfer. Lack of nodulation could not be explained by failure of bacteria to colonize the root or absence of root hairs. There were indications that the P-status of the plant together with a factor or factors that had to accumulate or deplete in solution, determined success or failure of nodulation. Daily application of 0.5-1.0 mg N per plant delayed nodule growth and nitrogen fixation slightly, but increased plant growth and alleviated the severe N-deficiency stress before the onset of N2-fixation. In six cultivars, Mo uptake in solution culture was ...

Book Effect of Row Spacing Plant Architecture and Herbicides on Weed Control in Pinto Bean Phaseolus Vulgaris

Download or read book Effect of Row Spacing Plant Architecture and Herbicides on Weed Control in Pinto Bean Phaseolus Vulgaris written by Michael Layne Thornton and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 106 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A 2-year field study was conducted to determine the effect of row spacing, plant architecture, and postemergence sequential herbicide treatments on season-long weed control in dry bean under sprinkler irrigation. Two row spacings, narrow row (15 and 19 cm) and wide row (56 cm), were compared along with two pinto bean varieties 'Sequoia' (Type II growth habit) and 'Othello' (Type III growth habit), and six weed control treatments. Weed control in PRE applications alone was unsatisfactory. Hand-weeded and POST sequential application averaged 91% control. Weed interference was reduced in narrow rows combined with POST sequential applications or in wide rows combined with POST sequential applications and cultivation. Narrow rows generally yielded higher than wide rows. However, more weeds were found in narrow rows versus wide rows likely due to cultivation. All treatments yielded higher than the weedy control. PRE only applications yielded significantly lower than POST sequential herbicide applications.

Download or read book The Common Bean Genome written by Marcelino Pérez de la Vega and published by Springer. This book was released on 2017-12-20 with total page 304 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides insights into the genetics and the latest advances in genomics research on the common bean, offering a timely overview of topics that are pertinent for future developments in legume genomics. The common bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) is the most important grain legume crop for food consumption worldwide, as well as a model for legume research, and the availability of the genome sequence has completely changed the paradigm of the ongoing research on the species. Key topics covered include the numerous genetic and genomic resources, available tools, the identified genes and quantitative trait locus (QTL) identified, and there is a particular emphasis on domestication. It is a valuable resource for students and researchers interested in the genetics and genomics of the common bean and legumes in general.

Book Nitrate Contamination

Download or read book Nitrate Contamination written by Istvan Bogardi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 438 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The nitrate content of drinking water is rising at an alarming rate in several regions of NATO countries and elsewhere in the world. The increase is due to lack of proper sewage treatment, and primarily to excess fertilizer application. Also, eutrophication in several coastal areas is triggered by high nitrate concentrations. The main purpose of this book is to integrate scientific knowledge related to exposure assessment, health consequences and control of nitrate contamination in water. The motivation is related to the magnitude, the possible adverse health effects, and the high cost of control ling nitrate contamination. Future research tasks are defined by an interaction among hydro logists, toxicologists and environmental engineers in an integrated framework for nitrate risk management. The target readership of this book is a mix of university colleagues, practitioners from both the private and public sectors and advanced graduate students working with the hydrological, health science or environmental engineering aspects of nitrate contamination. The main conclusions include: 1. For risk assessment purposes, knowledge and sufficiently accurate models are available to predict nitrate load and its fate in water under changes in land use. 2. Once agricultural exposure controls are implemented, the response times in ground water may be so long as to make controls unrealistic. 3. It is still unknown whether agricultural best management practice is a compromise between nitrate risk reduction and agricultural revenue. 4. The current drinking water guidelines of 10 mg/L NOrN need not be changed.

Book Pulse Improvement

Download or read book Pulse Improvement written by Shabir Hussain Wani and published by Springer. This book was released on 2018-11-23 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advances in molecular biology and genome research in the form of molecular breeding and genetic engineering put forward innovative prospects for improving productivity of many pulses crops. Pathways have been discovered, which include regulatory elements that modulate stress responses (e.g., transcription factors and protein kinases) and functional genes, which guard the cells (e.g., enzymes for generating protective metabolites and proteins). In addition, numerous quantitative trait loci (QTLs) associated with elevated stress tolerance have been cloned, resulting in the detection of critical genes for stress tolerance. Together these networks can be used to enhance stress tolerance in pulses. This book summarizes recent advances in pulse research for increasing productivity, improving biotic and abiotic stress tolerance, and enhancing nutritional quality.
