Book Resolution Of The Twentieth Century Conundrum In Elastic Stability

Download or read book Resolution Of The Twentieth Century Conundrum In Elastic Stability written by Isaac E Elishakoff and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2014-05-29 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: There have been stability theories developed for beams, plates and shells — the most significant elements in mechanical, aerospace, ocean and marine engineering. For beams and plates, the theoretical and experimental values of buckling loads are in close vicinity. However for thin shells, the experimental predictions do not conform with the theory, due to presence of small geometric imperfections that are deviations from the ideal shape. This fact has been referred to in the literature as ‘embarrassing’, ‘paradoxical’ and ‘perplexing’. Indeed, the popular adage, “In theory there is no difference between theory and practice. In practice there is”, very much applies to thin shells whose experimental buckling loads may constitute a small fraction of the theoretical prediction based on classical linear theory; because in practice, engineers use knockdown factors that are not theoretically substantiated. This book presents a uniform approach that tames this prima-donna-like and capricious behavior of structures that has been dubbed the ‘imperfection sensitivity’ — thus resolving the conundrum that has occupied the best minds of elastic stability throughout the twentieth century.

Book Aeroelastic Stability Characteristics of Cylindrical Shells Considering Imperfections and Edge Constraint

Download or read book Aeroelastic Stability Characteristics of Cylindrical Shells Considering Imperfections and Edge Constraint written by Gerald W. Barr and published by . This book was released on 1968 with total page 37 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Recent wind tunnel results indicate that the existing cylindrical shell aeroelastic stability theories are generally nonconservative. Therefore, some type of destabilizing mechanism is needed in the present theory to enhance correlation with experiment. In the paper, the dynamic stability behavior of thin circular cylindrical shells subjected to a supersonic flow field is investigated theoretically and compared with existing experimental data. Combined effects of axisymmetric initial geometric imperfections, radial edge constraint, and prestability deformations are considered. The cylinder's motion is described with nonlinear Donnell type shell equations coupled with a linear 'piston theory' aerodynamic approximation. A modal type approach employing Galerkin's approximate technique is used to investigate the dynamic stability about the shell's deformed middle surface. Prestability deformations alone have been shown to have very little influence on the aeroelastic stability behavior of very thin shells. However, with the inclusion of initial imperfections, the combined effect is destabilizing. The resulting aeroelastic stability boundaries correlate quite well with existing experimental data. Book Elastic Stability of Circular Cylindrical Shells

Download or read book Elastic Stability of Circular Cylindrical Shells written by N. Yamaki and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 1984-02-01 with total page 573 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The object of this book is to clarify the whole aspect of the basic problems concerning the elastic stability of of circular cylindrical shells under typical loading conditions. The book deals with buckling, postbuckling and initial postbuckling problems under one of the three fundamental loads, that is, torsion, pressure and compression. The emphases are placed on the accurate analysis and comprehensive numeral results for the buckling problem, experimental verification of the theoretical analysis for the postbuckling problem and clarification of the range of applicability of the perturbation method for the analysis of initial postbuckling behaviors and imperfection sensitivity. The problems under typical combined loads as well as the influence of the contained liquid are also clarified.

Book Bendings of Surfaces and Stability of Shells

Download or read book Bendings of Surfaces and Stability of Shells written by Alekse_ Vasil_evich Pogorelov and published by American Mathematical Soc.. This book was released on 1988-12-31 with total page 92 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains an accessible exposition of the geometric theory of stability of elastic shells, starting from the basic facts of the theory of finite and infinitesimal bendings of surfaces. The author has included a number of new results obtained in recent years. In particular, the complete solution of the problem of stability of spherical shells under an external pressure is contained here without any assumptions regarding the character of buckling. Within the framework of the mathematical model of the phenomenon, the author gives a complete investigation of the loss of stability of a general, strictly convex shell fastened along an edge under external pressure. The author considers the question of the loss of stability of cylindrical shells under axial compression and the effect of various factors on the critical load, among other questions. In contrast to the author's 1967 book on the subject, this work is limited to a relatively small number of classical problems on the loss of stability of shells, but these problems are investigated more thoroughly.

Book The Effect of Axisymmetric Initial Imperfections on the Vibrations of Cylindrical Shells Under Axial Compression

Download or read book The Effect of Axisymmetric Initial Imperfections on the Vibrations of Cylindrical Shells Under Axial Compression written by Aviv Rosen and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 31 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The vibrations of a cylindrical shell with an axisymmetric initial imperfection and axial preload are studied. Small asymmetric harmonic vibrations are superposed on the basic static axisymmetric equilibrium and the frequency of these vibrations is evaluated. The analysis is based on the nonlinear equations of shallow shell theory, and follows closely an earlier stability investigation by Koiter. The study is restricted to initial imperfections similar to an axisymmetric buckling mode of a perfect cylindrical shell and represents a first approximation only. Such imperfections exhibit a strong influence on the frequency of the vibrations. The possible implications of this effect are discussed. (Author).
