This book was released on 2014 with total page 51 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the study was to assess the contribution of FDI inflow on Kenya?s GDP, BOP and exports. This research paper was steered by the following research questions: What are the effects of FDI inflows on Kenyan economic growth (GDP)? What are the effects of the FDI inflows on Kenyan exports? and what are the effects of FDI on Kenya?s Balance of Payment (BOP)? Descriptive research design was used in this study. The research design involved observing and describing the behavior of a subject without influencing it in any way. The study relied on a correlation design. This involved obtaining data concerning FDI inflow, GDP, exports value and finally the BOP value of Kenya. The study focused mainly on Kenya as a country and data used was mainly secondary and was obtained from the Kenya Bureau of Statistics. A checklist developed based on the research questions of the study was used to collect data on the value of FDI inflow and the value of GDP, exports and BOP in the corresponding period. The time series data is from 2002-2011. Data was presented in tables. To ensure effective and efficient data analysis process, the data was analyzed using regression analysis in the statistical package for social sciences (SPSS). The data was then analyzed using descriptive, correlation, regression and analytic statistical methods and presented using tables and figures for clarity and ease of understanding. The study found that FDI inflow into Kenya has a positive relationship with the country?s economic growth. An increase in the level and value of FDI inflow to the country led to an increase in the county?s GDP. The finding on this relationship between FDI inflow and the country?s GDP revealed that the more FDI inflow into the country is health to the country?s economic growth. Regarding the relationship between FDI inflow in Kenya and the country?s exports, the study further found out that there was a negative correlation between FDI inflows and the level and value of the country?s exports. This implies that for every increase in the value and level of FDI inflow to the country, the country?s exports reduced. The study finding on the relationship between FDI inflow in Kenya and the country?s BOP was positive. For any increase in the value of FDI inflow into the country, there is an increase in the value of the country?s BOP. The finding revealed that the country?s BOP partly depends on the FDI inflow to the country and that more and more FDI inflow to Kenya is health to the country?s BOP. The study concluded that the relationship between FDI and GDP is positive but the significance of the relationship will depend on the host country?s types of investment, operational policies and even the period of the study. On the relationship between FDI inflow and the host country?s export, the study concluded that though the relationship was found to be negative, that the significance of the relationship to whether it is positive or negative also depends on the country of study, the economic policies in place and even the types of investments these FDIs venture in. and finally on the relationship between the FDI inflow and the BOP, the study concluded that the margin of significance rely on the industry, the country?s policies and the period of study. In light of these findings, the overall conclusion of the study is that FDI inflow has effect on the Kenya?s economy and is critical to the economy of the Kenya. The study made several recommendations among them the need for the government to improve the factors that favour the inflow of FDI to enhance rapid economic development and improve on the BOP. The recommendation for further study was that a similar study needs to be conducted on the other effects of FDI inflow to the host country like employment creation, on the standard of living.

Book Reviewing Impacts of Foreign Direct Investments on the Macroeconomic Performance of Developing Countries

Download or read book Reviewing Impacts of Foreign Direct Investments on the Macroeconomic Performance of Developing Countries written by Issam A.W. Mohamed and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 36 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Throughout the past two decades, many countries around the world have experienced substantial growth in their economies, driven by inflow of the foreign capital especially in the form of foreign direct investment (FDI). The share of net FDI in world GDP has grown five-fold through recent years, making the impact and consequences of FDI on economic growth a subject of ever-growing interest. The paper contributes in this context, by analyzing the impacts of impact of foreign direct investment on economic growth, if any, in Sudan during the period (1982-2007), also to investigate how to attract the required flow of FDI that is enough to fill saving-investment gap to sustain economic growth. With the hypothesis that sustained efforts to promote political and macroeconomic stability and implement essential structural reforms, and the policies of aligning some emerging markets has encouraged the inflow of FDI to Sudan in different sectors. The important findings are that FDI helps to promote economic growth in the Sudan, i.e. there is clear evidence of a one-way causality from FDI to economic growth for the whole period, in the sense that FDI have a significant positive effect on the GDP Growth, for it promotes exports and so balance of payments, provision of job opportunities and enhancing the quality of labor and production. However, the study finds that it is difficult to construct accurate and comparable measures of FDI data by sector for the Sudan as in most developing countries over several decades. Moreover, the tendency of major sources to present FDI data in broad aggregates limits the study of effects or impacts. The main recommendations are that the investment climate in the country must be improved through appropriate measures to keep pace with global economics developments, Government needed to establish a proper investment map serving the objectives of economic growth and developments consists of all data that may needed by foreign investors, supported by the necessary infrastructures. Government must develop and improve the periodic statistics concerning investment, foreign capital flows and sources of capital. Future researches in this area should analyze the causal link in a multivariate VAR analysis to account for other vital determinants of FDI and GDP growth.

Book Impact of Foreign Direct Investment on Economic Growth in Kenya

Download or read book Impact of Foreign Direct Investment on Economic Growth in Kenya written by Kelvin Maingi and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2015-02-11 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The general benefits of foreign direct investment (FDI) for emerging economies are well documented. Given the appropriate host-country policies and a basic level of development, various studies show that FDI results in technology spillovers, enables human capital formation, improves international trade integration, helps create a more competitive business environment and improves enterprise development. All of these result in higher economic growth, which is a crucial tool for alleviating poverty in developing countries. This study explores the impact of foreign direct investment on the Kenyan economy using FDI and GDP inflow data series from 2004 to 2013. The Statistical Package for Social Sciences was used to analyse the data where descriptive analyses, frequencies and trend analysis, as well as inferential analyses involving Analysis of Variance (ANOVA) and Correlation analysis to establish relationships between the variables. Graphical trend analysis of FDI and GDP reveals a direct positive relationship between the two variables.

Book The Effects of Diaspora Remittances on the Kenyan Economy MBA Thesis a Ccompanied by a CD ROM

Download or read book The Effects of Diaspora Remittances on the Kenyan Economy MBA Thesis a Ccompanied by a CD ROM written by and published by . This book was released on 2014 with total page 79 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to analyse the effect of remittances received from Kenyans residing abroad on macroeconomic factors in Kenya. This study was guided by the following research objectives: (i) To determine the effect of remittance flows on Kenya?s GDP; (ii) To determine the effect of remittance flows on investments in the Kenyan securities market; (iii) To determine the effect of remittance flows on bank interest rates in Kenya and (iv) To determine the effect of remittance flows on foreign exchange rates in Kenya. The research design was explanatory in nature focusing on remittances received from Kenyans residing in other countries and how they affect various macro-economic indicators such as gross domestic product (GDP), securities market data, interest rates and foreign exchange rates. The study primarily involved the examination of published data that was available from Central Bank of Kenya (CBK) and Kenya National Bureau of Statistics (KNBS), government ministries such as Ministry of Finance (MoF) and Ministry of East African Affairs, Commerce and Tourism (MEACT), as well as organisations such as the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD), the World Bank and the International Monetary Fund (IMF). Descriptive and inferential statistics were used to analyse the data. In particular, means and standard deviations were calculated for all the variables in the study. Further statistical analysis was carried out by use of correlation and regression analysis where remittance flows were regressed against GDP, exchange rates for selected currencies, investments in the securities market and bank interest rates. Data was analysed using Statistical Package for Social Sciences (SPSS) and results presented in graphs and tables. The study findings indicated that that the amounts of diaspora remittances had increased consistently over the period of study. Further the findings indicated that the real exchange rate has consistently inclined over the period under study. Correlation results revealed that there was positive and significant relationship between remittance flows and GDP, bank interest rates, US Dollar exchange rate and Euro exchange rate. The study findings concluded that diaspora remittances had a positive and significant relationship with GDP, bank interest rates, the US Dollar exchange rate and Euro exchange rate. The study recommends that the country needs to consider adopting institutions that help in amplifying the growth effects of remittances into sustainable economic growth. The government in conjunction with financial institutions should come up with policies that make it cheap, easy and safe to receive remittances as well as establish efficient and effective formal channels for sending and receiving remittances. The study recommends that the various commercial banks should develop banking products that will encourage migrants to maintain bank accounts in the labour-exporting country. Such accounts should be denominated in applicable foreign currency of choice to the migrant and must be made operational in the migrant?s country of residence through the use of modern information and communication technology. The study also recommends that effective measures are needed to be taken by the central bank to control inflation by reducing money supply in the economy. The formulation of monetary policy by the central bank is an important factor for controlling inflation. It is recommended that the monetary authority should use policies aimed at strengthening the Kenya shilling as doing so would reduce the charges for sending remittances. Kenya should device a way of influencing remittance recipient households to save their income so that the proceeds can be distributed to critical sectors of the economy. For instance, policies advocating for the increased use of remittances in funding entrepreneurial activities in the economy can be formulated. This will also need an effective and efficient distribution system, that is, a vibrant financial system that can mobilise remittance funds and distribute them as investment capital to unfunded entrepreneurs.

Book Impact of Foreign Direct Investment on Economic Growth in Kenya

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The aim of the paper was to determine the extent to which FDI inflows in the infrastructure sector, the manufacturing sector and the agricultural sector impact Kenya's economic growth. The results of the study show that FDI in the infrastructure sector has had a positive and significant impact on economic growth while the manufacturing and agriculture sectors have had a positive although such positive effect were insignificant. Unlike the manufacturing sector foreign direct investment inflows to the agricultural sector are relatively small which may be the cause of little impact.

Book The Impact of Capital and Foreign Exchange Flowson the Competitiveness of Developing Countries

Download or read book The Impact of Capital and Foreign Exchange Flowson the Competitiveness of Developing Countries written by Bassem Kamar and published by International Monetary Fund. This book was released on 2010-07-01 with total page 33 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Attracting capital and foreign exchange flows is crucial for developing countries. Yet, these flows could lead to real exchange rate appreciation and may thus have detrimental effects on competitiveness, jeopardizing exports and growth. This paper investigates this dilemma by comparing the impact of six types of capital and foreign exchange flows on real exchange rate behavior in a sample of 57 developing countries covering Africa, Europe, Asia, Latin America, and the Middle East. The results reveal that portfolio investments, foreign borrowing, aid, and income lead to real exchange rate appreciation, while remittances have disparate effects across regions. Foreign direct investments have no effect on the real exchange rate, contributing to resolve the above dilemma.

This book was released on 1963-01-01 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper discusses effects of inflation on economic development. A mild inflation may well encourage little, or no, evasion of the “inflation tax.” On the other hand, a strong inflation, and frequently a mild one also, will lead to community reactions which have effects like those of widespread tax evasion. A development policy may have wider aims than the encouragement of a high level of investment. Inflation has two effects on the desire for liquidity, which are related to the two basic reasons why individuals and businesses wish to hold liquid assets—the speculative and precautionary motives. Inflation increases the value of effective liquidity, thereby raising the community's desire for it, but it makes the most generally accepted store of liquidity unacceptable sources of protection. The control of inflation is only one of the problems facing a government wishing to encourage rapid economic development. The fight against illiteracy, the reform of bureaucratic practices, the building of basic sanitary facilities for the eradication of endemic diseases, the substitution of competitive for monopolistic trade practices, the encouragement of a widespread spirit of entrepreneurship, and the creation of an adequate amount of social capital, may be important prerequisites for rapid growth.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examining the economic forces that will shape Africa's future. Africa’s Lions examines the economic growth experiences of six fast growing and/or economically dominant African countries. Expert African researchers offer unique perspectives into the challenges and issues in Ethiopia, Ghana, Kenya, Mozambique, Nigeria, and South Africa. Despite a growing body of research on African economies, very little has focused on the relationship between economic growth and employment outcomes at the detailed country level. A lack of empirical data has deprived policymakers of a robust evidence base on which to make informed decisions. By harnessing country-level household, firm, and national accounts data together with existing analytical country research—the authors have attempted to bridge this gap. The growth of the global working-age population to 2030 will be driven primarily by Africa, which means that the relationship between growth and employment should be understood within the context of each country’s projected demographic challenge and the associated implications for employment growth. A better understanding of the structure of each country’s workforce and the resulting implications for human capital development, the vulnerably employed, and the working poor, will be critical to informing the development policy agenda. As a group, the six countries profiled in Africa’s Lions will largely shape the continent's future. Each country chapter focuses on the complex interactions between economic growth and employment outcomes, within the individual Africa’s Lions context.

Book excerpt: 'A compelling contribution to our evolving understanding of the links between trade, aid and security and what the international community needs to do to ensure peace and development in the world.' Achim Steiner, Executive Director, United Nations Environment Programme 'For far too long the international community ahs stood by while countries around the world descend into conflict and anarchy. We need to understand how we can engage more effectively with fragile and failing states. Trade, Aid and Security is an important step in this direction.' Jan Pronk, Special Representative of the UN General Secretary in Sudan and Former Minister of Development and the Environment, The Netherlands. 'As we begin to contemplate what the post-Iraq world will look like it is vital that we reflect on the limits of the utility of hard power and the importance that development can play in avoiding failed states before they fail, preventing conflicts and more successfully re-building states. This timely book makes a most important contribution to that process.' Lord Paddy Ashdown, UN High Representative for Boznia and Herzegovina, 2002 2006 Leader of UK Liberal Democrat Party, 1988 1999 'As UN Special Representative to the Great Lakes Region of Africa I have seen the devastating impact of the trade in conflict resources with my own eyes. Amongst much else, this book shows how different trade and aid politics can tackle the trade in conflict resources and make a real contribution to secure societies. It is essential reading.' Mohamed Sahnoun, Special Representative of the UN Secretary General in Central and East Africa. Iraq, Afghanistan, Darfur. This volume, written by leading authorities from across the globe, introduces the linkages between trade, aid and security, and exposes how inappropriate or misused trade and aid policy can and do undermine security and contribute to violence and the disintegration of national states. On a practical level they demonstrate how six key areas of trade and aid policy can be used to help forge stability and security, reduce the likelihood of armed conflict, and assist economic and political recovery in our war-torn world.

Ultimately, the purpose of the APF is to support adaptation processes to protect - and enhance - human well-being in the face of climate change. This volume will be invaluable for everyone working on climate change adaptation and policy-making.

Book Governing Africa s Forests in a Globalized World

Download or read book Governing Africa s Forests in a Globalized World written by Laura Anne German and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2009-12-01 with total page 435 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Many countries around the world are engaged in decentralization processes, and most African countries face serious problems with forest governance, from benefits sharing to illegality and sustainable forest management. This book summarizes experiences to date on the extent and nature of decentralization and its outcomes - most of which suggest an underperformance of governance reforms - and explores the viability of different governance instruments in the context of weak governance and expanding commercial pressures over forests. Findings are grouped into two thematic areas: decentralization, livelihoods and sustainable forest management; and international trade, finance and forest sector governance reforms. The authors examine diverse forces shaping the forest sector, including the theory and practice of decentralization, usurpation of authority, corruption and illegality, inequitable patterns of benefits capture and expansion of international trade in timber and carbon credits, and discuss related outcomes on livelihoods, forest condition and equity. The book builds on earlier volumes exploring different dimensions of decentralization and perspectives from other world regions, and distills dimensions of forest governance that are both unique to Africa and representative of broader global patterns. The authors ground their analysis in relevant theory while drawing out implications of their findings for policy and practice.
