'Sacrament' in this sense not only describes who the Church is, but what she does. In this regard, the Council Fathers were careful to establish a strong connection between the symbolic nature of the Church's sacraments and their effect on those who received them. Reginald Lynch is concerned with the cleansing of the heart—a phrase borrowed from St. Augustine and employed by Aquinas, which describes the effects that natural elements such as water or bread have on the human person when taken up by the Church as sacramental signs. Aquinas' approach to sacramental efficacy is unique for its integration of diverse theological topics such as Christology, merit, grace, creation and instrumentality. While all of these topics will be considered to some extent, the primary focus of The Cleansing of the Heart is the sacraments understood as instrumental causes of grace. This volume provides the historical context for understanding the development of sacramental causality as a theological topic in the scholastic period, emphasizing the unique features of Aquinas' response to this question. Following this, relevant texts from Aquinas' early and later work are examined, noting Aquinas' development and integration of the idea of sacramental causality in his later work. The Cleansing of the Heart concludes by contrasting alternatives to Aquinas' theory of sacramental causality that subsequently emerged. The rise of humanism introduced many changes within rhetoric and philosophy of language that had a profound effect on some theologians during the Modern period. In this analysis of the Thomist and Irenaean sources of Edward Schillebeeckx's creation faith, God's absolute saving presence to humanity is found to be intrinsic to his creative action. This becomes most explicit in God's humanity in the life, death and resurrection of Jesus Christ. Lewis argues that Jesus is both God's invitation to humanity and is himself the perfect human response to God. Because of this, Jesus' followers are called to be engaged in God's saving action, by working to remove suffering from people and to build a better world in which all may flourish. Schillebeeckx's theology is sometimes thought to divide into two disconnected halves, a pre- and post-Vatican II version. The way in which Schillebeeckx's Christological soteriology has developed over his theological career, before and after Vatican II, is here examined using the Annales model of continuity and change. This book finds that Schillebeeckx both breaks with the language of Chalcedon while remaining adamantly faithful to the truth which it expresses. The final chapters discover how Schillebeeckx's ideas and methods are crucially relevant in an analysis of contemporary social suffering in Ciudad-Juárez by Nancy Pineda-Madrid, and in the project of the Catholic Dialogue School in Flanders by Lieven Boeve.

This means of course that his theology is always both a reflection on the nature of God and on the meaning of humanity; and hence there is a theological anthropology at the centre of his whole theological enterprise. The 'definition' of humanity is given in the relationship between the mystery of God - the God who is both transcendent and immanent - and the mystery of humanity. For Schillebeeckx, the meaning of humanity is revealed and established in the mystery of God as a vocation to intimacy with God. This intimacy is described both as a dependence upon God and as a situated freedom, and hence the description of humanity which emerges from Schillebeeckx's treatise on God holds together humanity's metaphysical and moral significance. At the heart of this theocentric anthropology is its christological structure. Schillebeeckx develops a sacramental christology in light of his interpretation of Christ's incarnation. The relation of incarnation to the death, resurrection and glorification of Christ establishes a sacramental theological anthropology. The meaning of humanity is given in its creative, salvific, sanctifying, participative and personal relation to the God who is God both of creation and of covenant. This book develops an interpretation of Schillebeeckx's theological anthropology by analysing his theology of revelation and grace, and by examining the christological structure of his theology. This christology centres on an interpretation of the incarnation in which the fully personal nature of Christ's humanity is key. This christology establishes the sacramental nature of humanity and hence Schillebeeckx's description of the meaning of human nature is also a theological description of the meaning of human action.
