Book excerpt: Born in Brighton in 1861, Constance Clara Garnett (née Black) was the sixth of eight children. Educated at Newnham College, Cambridge she studied Latin and Greek, as well as Russian. She married Edward Garnett in 1889 and they had one son, David. It was on a visit to Russia in 1893 that Garnett met Leo Tolstoy and this meeting prompted her to begin translating the Russian literature that she was most passionate about. As a translator of Gogol, Tolstoy, Pushkin, Turgenev, Chekhov and Dostoevsky among others, Constance Garnett translated about 70 Russian works and received great acclaim from writers such as D. H. Lawrence and Joseph Conrad. Her translations had a major effect on readers and were reprinted well into the twentieth century. First published in 1991 and written by her grandson Richard Garnett, Constance Garnett is the biography of an extraordinary woman who, in the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries, made Russian literature available to the English speaking public. They had been dating for some time and John was keen to marry Josephine but they are having an argument about it as her father didn’t approve, presumably due to the lack of money on John’s behalf. Josephine Lackett and John Cromartie walking around London Zoo as they were wont to do on a pleasant weekend. He wants them to be married regardless, but she is reluctant to fall out with her family. Exasperated, John compares his situation with the caged animals they are viewing and decides to join them as an exhibit. John’s proposal is accepted by the Zoo’s Board, and he packs his bags and takes up residence in a new cage in the Ape-house.

Wells, were among his friends. Garnett felt most at home with the Bloomsbury Group, in particular with Vanessa Bell and Duncan Grant, his lover, with whom he lived during the First World War. Their long friendship was threatened, however, when Garnett's cradle-side prophecy to marry their daughter Angelica came true. David 'Bunny' Garnett is brought to life by Ben Lloyd-Hughes and Jack Davenport in the BBC series 'Life in Squares'.
