Book excerpt: This first volume is but an introduction to the growing use of computer-based systems in health-science education. It is unlikely that the intellectual or applied system constructs herein are either exhaustive of the field or immutable; growth is inevitable. For one thing, the field is still fractured and loosely organized, which is an inevitable description of an adolescent science in a rich mine of ideas. There is emerging, however, an organizing concept. A short look into the future indicates that educational system design will be dominated by a concept which, for want of a better term, we may call an "information system." Actually, this term de rives from an early New York World's Fair exhibition designed by Charles Eames entitled the "Informational Machine," in which the designer illustrated once again his insight into the future by showing how in a fundamental manner the digital computer promised to affect and to change our lives; and this change is by no means completed. Even during the publication of this volume, the basic sciences re quisite to the development of an information machine have evolved significantly. The three intellectual areas to watch are developments in artificial intelligence, graphics and man/machine interaction, and basic component and computer system design.

Each succeeding chapter, describes the problems in medicine, followed by a review in chronological sequence of why and how computers were applied to try to meet these problems. Only the technical aspects of computer hardware, software, and communications are discussed as they are necessary to explain how the technology was applied. This approach generally led to defining the objectives for applications of medical informatics. At the end of each chapter, the author summarizes his personal views and interpretations of the chapter contents. Although the concurrent evolution of medical informatics in Canada, Europe, and Japan certainly influenced workers in the United States, the scope of this historical review is limited to the development of medical informatics within the United States. Furthermore, this review is limited to electronic digital computers; it excludes mechanical, analog, and hybrid computers.

Lindberg M.D. dramatically increased access to knowledge about health issues, medicine, medical care, the health professions, and health literacy. As an enthusiastic visionary with a plan, his aim was to bring about a more efficient transfer and use of information and data. Dr. Lindberg and the NLM helped transform and reshape medicine and the health system in the 20th and 21st centuries. Dr. Lindberg envisioned, encouraged, and supported the development of electronic health records and telemedicine. Coupled with the evolution of the Internet, these technologies made health systems more efficient for research, the delivery of clinical services, the education of health professionals, bioethics, improving the public’s health literacy, and disease prevention strategies. Dr. Lindberg also was committed to enhancing the capacity of underserved and minority populations to make use of NLM’s health information resources. Transforming Biomedical Informatics and Health Information Access is a tribute to Don Lindberg and the NLM. The book is divided into four sections. The first documents the advances in biomedical informatics during Dr. Lindberg’s career, emphasizing the contributions made by teams of talented individuals at the NLM. The second section describes how the NLM’s creation of new methods of access to diverse biomedical databases improved information access for healthcare professionals, biomedical researchers, and the public. The more informal fourth section provides brief memoirs about Dr. Lindberg’s life, character, and humanism.
