Book excerpt: Excerpt from Militarism in Education: A Contribution to Educational Reconstruction What we teach our children is not half so important as how we teach them. The things we learn in school, we in a great measure forget, but the influence of a good educational system remains for ever. - eotvos (first Hungarian Minister of Education, WE like to regard the human intellect as the basis of civilization, and to leave instinct to the beasts; but we cannot. Man never trusts to his reason though he has developed his brain to the degree of elephantiasis, and though the clear intellects of a few individuals may guide the course of human politics, the mass mind, which in the long run settles the trend of social evolution, rests for motive on instinct, blind as an insect's, emotional, irrational, Often hysterical. In a crowd feelings are accentuated, ideas cancelled out, and the crowd is the basis Of society. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Influence of Reconstruction, on Education in the South The period of the Presidential Plan of Reconstruction, from 1865 to 1867, marks an attempt to enlist the cooperation of the native white citizens in restorin civil order in the South. Under the Congressional Plan, howm7 6, three classes instead of one, as in the Presidential Plan, participated in political affairs: the native whites, the negro freedmen, and men from the North. The native whites were sharply divided into conservatives and radicals or scalawags; the negroes were the most homogeneous, usually of the same mind and easily influenced; while the men from the North, commonly known as carpetbaggers, were, from the standpoint of the South, pre dominantly radical. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Reconstructed School In our school processes there are many constants which have general recognition as such by thoughtful people. On the other hand, there are many variables which should be subjected to close scrutiny to the end that they may be made to yield forth the largest possible returns upon the investment of time and effort. These phases of school procedure constitute the real problem in the work of reconstruction, and the following pages represent an effort to point the way toward larger and better results in the realm of these variables. In general, the aims and purposes of the worker determine the quality of the work done. If, therefore, this volume succeeds in stimulating teachers to elevate the goals of their endeavors, it will have accomplished its purpose. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Education and the Army: An Essay in Reconstruction It is with considerable diffidence that I set myself to try and give some account of the origins, development, and purpose of the great adult education movement in the Army which it fell to my lot to organize and direct. Such account must of necessity be rather of a personal character, and it seemed better, therefore, if it was thought to be necessary at all, that it should be written by an observer rather than by a participator. But it has been very strongly represented to me by men of much distinction, and acquainted both with what was attempted and with what was achieved, that there is no one else whose experience was sufficiently comprehensive to enable him to undertake the task, and that it is a task which definitely ought to be undertaken. This book was released on 2017-11-05 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reconstruction of the Secondary-School Curriculum: Its Meaning and Trends The descriptions given in the preceding paragraphs make clear the impossibility of formulating a simple statement of the characteristics of our secondary schools. For the purpose of this bulletin, the writers have thought of the secondary school primarily in terms of the middle division of our educational system, formerly including grades nine to twelve but now frequently being extended to include also grades seven and eight. They have not included, except incidentally, either the small high school or the very large high school. In general, the writers have had the public high school in mind, but occasional reference has been made to secondary schools not supported by a general property tax. Download or read book Peter Ramus and the Educational Reformation of the Sixteenth Century Classic Reprint written by Frank Pierrepont Graves and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Peter Ramus and the Educational Reformation of the Sixteenth Century It is difficult to understand why Ramus has been so much neglected by writers upon the sixteenth century. He was probably the foremost French philosopher of his century, and he stands well among the great educators, effective orators, and lofty characters of the world's history. In many respects he seems a striking forerunner of modern times. Alcuin, Abelard, Petrarch, Valla, Erasmus, Luther, Ramus, and Descartes are milestones that mark the pathway of progress from medievalism. Yet in few general histories do the life and work of this remarkable reformer figure in any detail. In treatises written in English he is barely mentioned, and while there have been for half a century some extended accounts of his career by French writers, and of late German scholars have been making careful contributions to elucidate the various phases of his work, there scarcely exists anywhere a complete account of his achievements that includes an analysis of his works.
