Book excerpt: In Learning While Black Janice Hale argues that educators must look beyond the cliches of urban poverty and teacher training to explain the failures of public education with regard to black students. Why, Hale asks simply, are black students not being educated as well as white students? Hale goes beyond finger pointing to search for solutions. Closing the achievement gap of African American children, she writes, does not involve better teacher training or more parental involvement. The solution lies in the classroom, in the nature of the interaction between the teacher and the child. And the key, she argues, is the instructional vision and leadership provided by principals. To meet the needs of diverse learners, the school must become the heart and soul of a broad effort, the coordinator of tutoring and support services provided by churches, service clubs, fraternal organizations, parents, and concerned citizens. Calling for the creation of the "beloved community" envisioned by Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Hale outlines strategies for redefining the school as the Family, and the broader community as the Village, in which each child is too precious to be left behind. "In this book, I am calling for the school to improve traditional instructional practices and create culturally salient instruction that connects African American children to academic achievement. The instruction should be so delightful that the children love coming to school and find learning to be fun and exciting."—Janice Hale

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every child was born to be someone great. However, a child's journey to greatness in life begins with how seriously they engage in the educational process. That foundation is only developed when parents fully engage in the educational journey and purposely forge a collaborative connection to their child's teacher. Research strongly supports that children who embrace education early as a critical component in their growth are maximally successful in school and consistently do well in other endeavors. It is solely the responsibility of parents to ensure that foundation is strong."Unleash Educational Excellence" is an educational guidebook that provides simple, yet empowering strategies for parents and educators to help children on a life-long educational journey for success. This dynamic resource helps parents in all parenting situations understand that education begins in the home and parents are a child's first teacher and strongest advocate for long-term success. Whether dual parent households, single parent homes, non-resident father parenting, special needs parenting, and foster care parenting, this book provides proven strategies and life-long lessons to strengthen the family, enhance the child's school journey, and ensure a success mindset throughout the child's life."Unleash Educational Excellence" is critical to the foundation of the experiential education philosophy, a critical strategy purposed to enhance the classroom learning environment for student engagement. Defined as a process in which teachers purposefully involve students in hands-on experiences and subsequent reflections in order to maximize learning in the classroom and make it more applicable to life outside the classroom. Educators cannot effectively facilitate experiential education without the fundamentals that a parent teaches at home and without the parent being intrinsically engaged in the experiential learning process. "Unleash" is the tool to assure parents and teachers work in close collaboration to ensure educational excellence for every child in school and life!

Book Homeschooling for Excellence

Download or read book Homeschooling for Excellence written by David Colfax and published by Grand Central Publishing. This book was released on 2009-05-30 with total page 143 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: THE COLFAXES DIDN'T START TEACHING THEIR BOYS AT HOME TO GET THEM INTO HARVARD - BUT THAT'S WHAT HOMESCHOOLING ACCOMPLISHED! For over fifteen years, David and Micki Colfax educated their children at home. They don't think of themselves as pioneers, though that's what they became. Unhappy with the public schools, the Colfaxes wanted the best education possible for their four sons: a program for learning that met the evolving needs of each child and gave them complete control of how and what their children learned. The results? A prescription for excellence-Harvard educations for their sons Grant, Drew, and Reed. (Their fourth son is still too young for college.) Now the Colfaxes tell how all parents can become involved in homeschooling. In a straight-talking book that reads like a frank conversation among friends, they tell what they did and how they did it: their educational approaches, the lessons they learned, and what materials-books, equipment, educational aids-proved most useful over the years. Best of all, they show you how you can take charge of your children's education-in an invaluable sourcebook that will help you find a rewarding and successful alternative to our failing schools.

Book Excellence for All

Download or read book Excellence for All written by Jack Schneider and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 190 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: By the early twenty-first century, a startling consensus had emerged about the overall aim of American school reform. In an era of political discord, and in a field historically known for contentiousness, the notion of promoting educational excellence for all students was a distinct point of bipartisan agreement. Shaped by a corps of entrepreneurial reformers intent on finding "what works" and taking it to scale, this hybrid vision won over the nation's most ambitious and well-resourced policy leaders at foundations and nonprofits, in state and federal government, and in urban school districts from coast to coast. "Excellence for all" might, at first glance, appear to be nothing more than a rhetorical flourish. Who, after all, would oppose the idea of a great education for every student? Yet it is hardly a throwaway phrase. Rather, it represents a surprising fusion of educational policy approaches that had been in tense opposition throughout the twentieth century--those on the right favoring social efficiency, and those on the left supporting social justice. This book seeks to understand why the "excellence for all" vision took hold at the time it did, unpacks the particular beliefs and assumptions embedded in it, and details the often informal coalition building that produced this period of consensus. Examining the nation's largest urban school districts (Los Angeles, Chicago, and New York), the author details three major reform efforts in chapters titled "The Right Space: The Small Schools Movement"; "The Right Teachers: Teach for America"; and "The Right Curriculum: Expanding Advanced Placement."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We are in an education crisis. We need to restore the teaching profession to one of respect and support and provide effective education to enable current students, the "new kids," to rise to their full potential "What a fabulous book. Herm and Dolores have written a truly inspirational resource for teachers. This should be required reading for anyone preparing to enter the classroom--and for anyone who needs to step back and rethink, think through, or reconsider their practice. They speak to the reader's heart as well as the head, and Herm's poetry is the best medicine I know for preventing teacher burnout." --Carol Jago, president of the National Council of Teachers of English and long-time middle and high school teacher in Santa Monica, California "The Missing Piece by Dolores and Hermon Card is the book we've all been waiting for about how to educate the 'new kids, ' this evolutionary bunch of uniquely different individuals known variously by labels as quirky as they are. You name it and this book covers it, and in a style as usable as it is advanced. Dolores and Hermon encourage students to make connections to themselves and then work beyond themselves to extend their reach--'to work with us, not for us.' "The raw truth about our current education system and how to fix it is covered, with poetry, with solutions and with expansive teaching styles that include meditation, Reiki, chakras, the higher self, and the importance of spirituality. No, this isn't new age; it is new thought, in its most courageous form--a balanced and realistic way to educate the whole child. "I was blown away by The Missing Piece. No one else has looked at our educational system today, and the various proposals to fix what's wrong, with eyes and hearts broad enough to recognize what was and is still missing, what the 'new kids' must have--a holistic approach. Thank you, Dolores and Hermon Card, for giving us a miracle." --P. M. H. Atwater, L.H.D., author of Children of the Fifth World, Future Memory, and Near Death Experiences: The Rest of the Story
