Book excerpt: Why are so many Black students prematurely leaving school? What factors can be attributed toward academic achievement of Black students? Should teachers be less concerned with curriculum content and more sensitive to the social and psychological needs during child development? The authors argue that academic achievement for Black students is influenced not only by circumstances found in the individual or family and school settings, but by a whole host of factors. Social and economic environments, the development of the self-concept, peer pressure, personal attributes such as resources, skills and motivation--these are a few of the many factors contributing towards a person's ability to achieve academically. Black Students brings together current research to address these factors from a variety of perspectives and covers the full educational cycle from kindergarten through the college years. The majority of past research on academic achievement of Black students has placed blame on the individual or credited failure toward an incapability to succeed. Those disparities are caused not only by fundamental differences in health status across segments of the population, but also because of inequities in factors that impact health status, so-called determinants of health. Book excerpt: This study used the approach of critical ethnography to make a credible, critical inquiry into social, academic and educational phenomena which affect the psychological development, leaning styles, motivation and academic achievement of African American students in general and specifically African American, adolescent males. Through their own voices, this group of adolescent, African American males told what the meaning of schooling was for them and how they interpreted everyday experiences related to schooling. More importantly, how they defined success and achievement in terms of schooling as it relates to life in general. Five adolescent, African American males were selected through purposeful sampling to participate in the study. Data were analyzed in an interactive model through the theoretical framework of the human ecological development, against the research questions and goals of the study. Multiple data sources were used as well as constant comparative analysis to address threats against internal and external validity and reliability. The study made meaning of the two themes which emerged: those themes were in-school factors and self. The construct of self included four categories which were race, motivation, adolescent egocentrism and emotions. Constant comparative analysis was used to qualify the major themes, categories and subcategories. Major findings which emerged from the study included that the adolescents were disengaged from their schooling process and that in-school factors greatly impacted this disengagement. Also important was how early sorting process for African American males begins and that this sorting generally results in resistance which fuels a cycle of negative interactions between the young males and the authoritarian power structure. Proscriptive rather than prescriptive messages relative to the condition of African American, adolescent males emerged from this study.

It is based on my experiences as a Christian educator, youth counselor and pastor. Through personal witness of African-American youths, I have experienced first-hand and swallowed the bitter pill of poverty, violence, victimization and homicide. African-American youth(s) are statistically the greatest perpetrators of crime in the communities, and the lowest academic achievers. It is my hope to create a greater community-wide awareness at a time when society will see black youth(s) beyond the playing field and look for the real role models in their respective communities such as; teachers, pastors, mothers, fathers, and grandparents. In my book, I will place greater emphasis on the role of parenting and education in influencing youth(s) to partake in activities which will hone their abilities and create positive outlooks on life. The active involvement of various organizations, schools and individuals could hasten the achievement of these goals; for unity leads to revolutionary reform. Interpersonal violence has a dramatic impact on the health of American youth(s). Homicides, the salient and easily measured impact, account for one of every five deaths among youths, ages fifteen to twenty-four and 58 per cent of deaths among black males fifteen to nineteen. From 1985 through 1990, firearm homicide rates increased 141 per cent for all fifteen-to-nineteen year olds and nearly tripled among black males in this age group. Positive Adolescent Choices Training (P.A.C.T.) designed specifically for African-American male and female adolescents, applies cognitive training methods in small group settings in six skill areas. Elementary school teachers (preferably), select students for participation based on social skill deficiencies, problems with aggressive behavior, or history of victimization. Training is provided twice a week in fifty minute sessions for half of the school year. PACT volunteers will facilitate the training and are aided by a high-quality video tape that demonstrates the skills in realistic situations.
