Book Education Work and Leisure Routledge Revivals

Download or read book Education Work and Leisure Routledge Revivals written by Harold Entwistle and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-06-17 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: First published in 1970, this book considers the alleged distinction between ‘education for life’ and ‘education for work’ and exposes the fallacies on which this and other similar distinctions are based. It shows that ideas on this subject are inextricably intertwined with wider views on the nature of culture, the limits of individual educability and the provision of educational opportunities. Indeed, Dr Entwistle argues that students need to be well informed of these issues in order to be in a strong enough position to face problems of education and social development that will occur during their working lives.

Book Critique of Everyday Life Vol 1

Download or read book Critique of Everyday Life Vol 1 written by Henri Lefebvre and published by Verso Books. This book was released on 2008-02-17 with total page 313 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Henri Lefebvre’s magnum opus: a monumental exploration of contemporary society. Henri Lefebvre’s three-volume Critique of Everyday Life is perhaps the richest, most prescient work by one of the twentieth century’s greatest philosophers. Written at the birth of post-war consumerism, the Critique was a philosophical inspiration for the 1968 student revolution in France and is considered to be the founding text of all that we know as cultural studies, as well as a major influence on the fields of contemporary philosophy, geography, sociology, architecture, political theory and urbanism. A work of enormous range and subtlety, Lefebvre takes as his starting-point and guide the “trivial” details of quotidian experience: an experience colonized by the commodity, shadowed by inauthenticity, yet one which remains the only source of resistance and change. This is an enduringly radical text, untimely today only in its intransigence and optimism.

Book excerpt: One of the most important philosophy titles published in the twentieth century, Joseph Pieper's Leisure, the Basis of Culture is more significant, even more crucial than it was when it first appeared fifty years ago. Pieper shows that Greeks understood and valued leisure, as did the medieval Europeans. He points out that religion can be born only in leisure. Leisure that allows time for the contemplation of the nature of God. Leisure has been, and always will be, the first foundation of any culture. He maintains that our bourgeois world of total labor has vanquished leisure, and issues a startling warning: Unless we regain the art of silence and insight, the ability for nonactivity, unless we substitute true leisure for our hectic amusements, we will destroy our cultureCand ourselves. These astonishing essays contradict all our pragmatic and puritanical conceptions about labor and leisure; Joseph Pieper demolishes the twentieth-century cult of Awork as he predicts its destructive consequences.

Book The Labour of Leisure

Download or read book The Labour of Leisure written by Chris Rojek and published by SAGE Publications. This book was released on 2010 with total page 217 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Leisure has always been associated with freedom, choice and flexibility. The week-end and vacations were celebrated as 'time off'. In his compelling new book, Chris Rojek turns this shibboleth on its head to demonstrate how leisure has become a form of labour. Modern men and women are required to be competent, relevant and credible, not only in the work place but with their mates, children, parents and communities. The requisite empathy for others, socially acceptable values and correct forms of self-presentation demand work. Much of this work is concentrated in non-work activity, compromising traditional connections between leisure and freedom. Ranging widely from an analysis of the inflated aspirations of the leisure society thesis to the culture of deception that permeates leisure choice, Rojek shows how leisure is inextricably linked to emotional labour and intelligence. It is now a school for life. In challenging the orthodox understandings of freedom and free time, The Labour of Leisure sets out an indispensable new approach to the meaning of leisure. Chris Rojek is Professor of Sociology and Culture at Brunel University. In 2003 he was awarded the Allen V. Sapora Award for outstanding achievement in the field of leisure studies.

Book Music Leisure Education

  • Author : Roger Mantie
  • Publisher : Oxford University Press
  • Release : 2022-01-04
  • ISBN : 0199381380
  • Pages : 297 pages

Download or read book Music Leisure Education written by Roger Mantie and published by Oxford University Press. This book was released on 2022-01-04 with total page 297 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores historical and philosophical connections between music, leisure, and education. Specifically, it considers how music learning, teaching, and participation can be reconceptualized in terms of leisure. Taking as its starting point the art of living and the ethical question of how one should live, the book engages a wide range of scholarship to problematize the place of non-professional music-making in historical and contemporary (Western) conceptions of the good life and the common good. Part I provides a general background on music education, school music, the work ethic, leisure studies, recreation, play, and conduct. Part II focuses on two significant currents of thought and activity during the Progressive Era in the United States, the settlement movement and the recreation movement. The examination demonstrates how societal concerns over conduct (the threat of leisure) and differing views on the purpose of music learning and teaching led to a fracturing between those espousing generalist and specialist positions. The four chapters of Part III take readers through considerations of happiness (eudaimonia) and the good life, issues of work-life balance and the play spirit, leisure satisfaction in relation to consumerism, individualism, and the common good, and finally, parenting logics in relation to extracurriculars, music learning, and serious leisure.

Book Envisioning Education in a Post Work Leisure Based Society

Download or read book Envisioning Education in a Post Work Leisure Based Society written by Eugene Matusov and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2020-05-14 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is both an analytic and imaginative study of the future role of education in a leisure-based society. Grounded in a philosophical approach that draws on the work of Aristotle, Arendt, Keynes, and others, the volume deconstructs modern work-based society, as well as mainstream institutionalized education, which the author argues have systemically alienated students from their education, authorial agency, and society itself. The author argues for the value of intrinsic education, where the goals are based on students' own needs and interests, imagining new opportunities that can arise from the emergence of such a society.
