Book Education in a Multicultural Cyprus

Download or read book Education in a Multicultural Cyprus written by Nicos Anastasiou and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2017-08-21 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Greek Cypriots, Turkish Cypriots, Maronites, Latins, and Armenians have been the primary historical communities that make up the multicultural landscape of Cyprus. However, the continuing conflict between the Greek and Turkish Cypriots has geographically, socially and psychologically segregated these communities, while the influx of economic migrants, especially after Cyprus’s accession to the EU in 2004, has, in turn, contributed to Cyprus’s challenges, arising from multiculturalism, in an altogether different perspective. How has education, over time, addressed and re-examined all these issues introduced by Cyprus’ complex evolving multiculturalism and ethnic diversity? How can education better attend to current problems of coexistence in Cyprus, and what kind of role can it play in a federal re-united country? This collection of essays introduces an innovative and critical examination of these questions in order to provide relevant answers. More specifically, it examines how formal, non-formal and informal education contributed to the creation and perpetuation of the Cyprus conflict, as well as to prejudices, inter-ethnic stereotypes, and misperceptions. The book also discusses how education could contribute to conflict transformation, empathy and peaceful coexistence amongst the different Cypriot communities, and how this has been possible in other multi-ethnic societies. The volume will be of interest to students, practitioners, and researchers interested in peace education, multiculturalism and conflict transformation.

Book The importance of culture of schools in Cyprus for their strategic leadership and management

Download or read book The importance of culture of schools in Cyprus for their strategic leadership and management written by Fotini Mastroianni and published by GRIN Verlag. This book was released on 2017-04-03 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essay from the year 2009 in the subject Pedagogy - The Teacher, Educational Leadership, , language: English, abstract: Leadership is a way of motivating a group to enable them to achieve their aims. It also involves being responsible for the group as a whole. A leader is either appointed by the senior levels of management or elected by the group. However, it has been argued that a leader can not have all the skills required therefore the optimum will be to have as a leader someone who is flexible but when it is required s/he will let the leadership to the others. According to various researches it has been proved that leadership skills are increased when the appropriate educational culture prevails. The school principal is the leader of the school. It is going to be examined how leadership styles and theory can affect the way schools in Cyprus are managed and their correlation with culture. According to the Teacher Training Agency (1998) in UK and the National College for School Leadership have emphasized the fact that ‘the key to unlocking the full potential of pupils in our schools lies in the expertise of teachers and headteachers”. Various researchers have proven that there is a positive correlation between the students’ achievements and the quality of teaching and there is also a positive correlation between the quality of leadership and the quality of teaching. All of these factors are influenced by the culture of the school and the education system.

Book Social and Ethnic Inequalities in the Cypriot Education System

Download or read book Social and Ethnic Inequalities in the Cypriot Education System written by Areti Stylianou and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-06-11 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Accommodating the diversity of learners in mainstream schooling and providing high quality education for all, inclusive education is prioritised at international and European levels as a human rights issue and as a reform strategy which tackles inequalities and promotes social cohesion within both schools and wider society. This book advances critical realist ideas in empirical research in order to close the theory–practice gap and shift the emphasis from epistemology to ontology with regard to teachers’ empowerment to provide inclusive education. With a focus on the school context rather than the agency of the individual teacher, the authors use empirical data from case studies to demonstrate teachers’ disempowerment as real, and rooted in features of reality. Offering a unified critical realist model, the book challenges taken-for-granted ideas and practices concerning the empowerment of teachers in inclusive education and seeks to set the ground for a more holistic and inclusive educational change.
