Skepticism has been obliged to recede before the demonstra tion that each new, great migration has brought a new element of strength and a new measure of completeness to the equipment of the nation. Pur'itanism - call it by what distinguishing name you will - was doubtless the most sublime force which ever developed among men for giving liberty and aiding learning. It was the honest, harsh, necessary instrument which alone could break out the roads over which democracy might advance.
